    Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien.

The ten essays address five major concerns: the poem's programmatic representation of social and religious institutions and values; its transformation of folktales and traditional stories into epic adventures; its representation of gender roles and, in particular, of Penelope; its narrative strategies and form; and its relation to the Iliad, especially to that epic's distinctive conception of heroism. In the introduction, Seth L. Schein describes the poetic background to the work and suggests a variety of interpretive approaches, some of which are developed in the essays that follow. These essays include previously published work by Jean-Pierre Vernant, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Pietro Pucci, and Charles P. Segal. There also are a new essay by Laura M. Slatkin, two revised and expanded ones by Nancy Felson-Rubin and Michael N. Nagler, and three appearing in English for the first time by Uvo Hlscher, Karl Reinhardt, and Vernant. The result is a collection that juxtaposes older, often hard-to-find articles with significant newer pieces in a way that allows for a fruitful dialogue among them

    An introduction to the study of women in diverse religious culturesWhile women have made gains in equality over the past two centuries, equality for women in many religious traditions remains contested throughout the world. In the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints women are not ordained as priests. In areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan under Taliban occupation girls and women students and their teachers risk their lives to go to school. And in Sri Lanka, fully ordained Buddhist nuns are denied the government identity cards that recognize them as citizens. Is it possible to create families, societies, and religions in which women and men are equal? And if so, what are the factors that promote equality?Theory of Women in Religions offers an economic model to shed light on the forces that have impacted the respective statuses of women and men from the earliest developmental stages of society through the present day. Catherine Wessinger integrates data and theories from anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history, gender studies, and psychology into a concise history of religions introduction to the complex relationship between gender and religion. She argues that socio-economic factors that support specific gender roles, in conjunction with religious norms and ideals, have created a gendered division of labor that both directly and indirectly reinforces gender inequality. Yet she also highlights how as the socio-economic situation is changing religion is being utilized to support the transition toward women's equality, noting the ways in which many religious representations of gender change over time
