    In the context of the rapidly advancing population ageing, the region of Latin America and the Caribbean is currently facing an unprecedented challenge of adapting to the transformed - yet, still evolving - age structure of the population. The paper provides a regional synthesis of the National Transfer Accounts on the basis of the most recent NTA estimates from 10 LAC countries. Despite the greatly varying length of the per capita lifecycle surplus among the countries, the regional average stands at 26 years, with individuals below 30 and above 56 years old experiencing periods of deficits. At the aggregate level, children and youths continue being the biggest ‘burden’ to the regional economy and their deficit is mainly financed by private transfers. Public transfers are the principal financing flow of the older persons’ deficit. Using the UN population projections, the paper further illustrates the potential impacts of the expected demographic changes

    Using four cross-sectional data files for the United States and Europe we show that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) have a significant impact on subjective wellbeing (SWB) in adulthood. Death of a parent, parental separation or divorce, financial difficulties, the prolonged absence of a parent, quarreling between parents, parental unemployment, sexual assault, experiencing long-term health problems, being bullied at school and being beaten or punched as a child all have long-term impacts on wellbeing. These experiences impact a wide range of wellbeing measures in adulthood including satisfaction with many aspects of everyday life, happiness and life satisfaction, self-assessed health, and are positively linked to measures of negative affect including the GHQ6. The evidence linking ACEs to lower SWB in adulthood is consistent across fifty different measures including sixteen positive affect and twenty-six negative affect measures relating to assessments of one's one life, and eight variables capturing how the individual feels about the area she lives in, including unemployment, drugs, violence and vandalism plus democracy in their country. Trauma in childhood is long lasting.

    Our study examines social inequalities in dental visits, the status of primary and permanent teeth, the dental treatments, the availability of publicly funded dental care and health behaviours related to dental health among Hungarian children. We use all available administrative and survey data sources to provide a comprehensive picture. We show that there are already significant social differences in dental health, dental visits and health behaviours at the age of 2-3 years, which are compounded by significant social gaps in access to publicly funded dental care. These early childhood gaps often widen with age. We conclude our study with health and social policy implications that can help reduce social disparities in children's dental health.

    The connection between child development and gender can only be traced by analysing the complex interplay of many different individual and social, political and social, historical and cultural factors - it cannot be explored or empirically measured with the help of selective research. The current yearbook therefore presents theoretical, empirical-qualitative and empirically quantitative contributions and research reports that examine gender aspects of childhood life and learning. Dem Zusammenhang von kindlicher Entwicklung und Geschlecht lässt sich nur über die Analyse des komplexen Zusammenspiels vieler unterschiedlicher, individueller und gesellschaftlicher, politischer und sozialer, historischer und kultureller Faktoren auf die Spur kommen - er kann nicht mit Hilfe punktueller Recherchen erschlossen oder empirisch gemessen werden. Der aktuelle Jahrbuch-Band stellt deshalb theoretische, empirisch-qualitative und empirisch quantitative Beiträge und Forschungsberichte vor, die Geschlechteraspekte kindlichen Lebens und Lernens untersuchen. Ulrike Schmauch, Gleichgeschlechtliche Orientierungen von Mädchen und Jungen Anja Zeiske/Alexandra Klein/Hans Oswald, Die Lust beim ersten Mal Dieser Band liefert Fachleuten und anderen Interessierten einen Einblick in den aktuellen Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht. Positiv fällt auf, dass auch Zwischenergebnisse vorgestellt werden, was den wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördern dürfte. Sehr schön ist auch die differenzierte und sensible Einführung, die darauf hinweist, dass die Wirklichkeit der Kinder und der Verlauf ihrer geschlechtlichen Entwicklung auch nicht mit noch so zahlreichen empirischen Studien "vermessen" werden kann (12). Trotzdem ist die Wahrnehmung des Faktors Geschlechtsidentität für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für die Praxis beispielsweise in Kindergarten und Schule. Wichtig hierfür sind kluge Interpretationen der Befunde zum Thema Kinder und Geschlecht. Solche theoretisch fundierten und weiterführenden Reflexionen sind in diesem Buch zu finden. Freiburger GeschlechterStudien 24/2010 ... der Band [liefert] einen facettenreichen Einblick in den Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht, der seinem Anliegen des wissenschaftlichen Austausches u.a. durch die Vorstellung von Zwischenergebnissen, die auf ihre Weiterführung neugierig machen, gerecht wird. ... Lesenswert ist der Band im Sinne des angestrebten Forums für Kolleg/innen, die am Diskurs beteiligt sind, mit ähnlichen Schwerpunkten forschen und Fragen der Geschlechterentwicklung in Forschung und Lehre verfolgen. Interessant sind einzelne Beiträge darüber hinaus für die Auseinandersetzung mit geschlechtsspezifischen Bildungsprozessen im Rahmen des Umgangs mit Heterogenität in erziehungswissenschaftlichen Studiengängen: Die Bewusstwerdung über Erkenntnisse zur Geschlechtsidentität als einer Heterogenitätsdimension ist für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für den wertschätzenden Umgang mit Individualität, Gemeinsamkeit und Verschiedenheit in der pädagogischen Praxis. socialnet.de 2/2009

    In Kindheit und Jugend ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit ästhetischen Darstellungs- und Wahrnehmungsweisen hochgradig relevant. Die Bedeutsamkeit ästhetischer Positionierungen - etwa durch die Wahl der Kleidung oder Accessoires, durch Make-up oder technische Geräte - kann einerseits als Anzeichen einer sehr erfolgreichen Kommerzialisierung von Kindheit und Jugend gedeutet werden. Andererseits zeugt sie aber auch von einem Gespür, mit dem sich Kinder und Jugendliche die Alltagswelt, in der sie leben, zu eigen machen. Um die sozialen Verhältnisse von Ästhetiken, Ökonomien und Generationenbeziehungen in den Blick zu nehmen, versammelt dieser interdisziplinäre Band Forschungsperspektiven zu Alltagsästhetiken in Kindheit und Jugend. In childhood and youth, an engagement with aesthetic modes of representation and perception is of great importance. The significance of aesthetic positionings - for instance through the choice of clothing or accessories, through make-up or gadgets - can on the one hand be interpreted as signs of a successful commercialization of childhood and youth. On the other hand, however, they testify to the savvy with which children and teenagers make their daily world their own and develop their design aesthetics. In order to consider the related social conditions of aesthetics, economies, and inter-generational relationships, this transdisciplinary volume brings together a range of research perspectives on everyday aesthetics in childhood and youth.

    Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the »wounded mind«. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

    The connection between child development and gender can only be traced by analysing the complex interplay of many different individual and social, political and social, historical and cultural factors - it cannot be explored or empirically measured with the help of selective research. The current yearbook therefore presents theoretical, empirical-qualitative and empirically quantitative contributions and research reports that examine gender aspects of childhood life and learning. Dem Zusammenhang von kindlicher Entwicklung und Geschlecht lässt sich nur über die Analyse des komplexen Zusammenspiels vieler unterschiedlicher, individueller und gesellschaftlicher, politischer und sozialer, historischer und kultureller Faktoren auf die Spur kommen - er kann nicht mit Hilfe punktueller Recherchen erschlossen oder empirisch gemessen werden. Der aktuelle Jahrbuch-Band stellt deshalb theoretische, empirisch-qualitative und empirisch quantitative Beiträge und Forschungsberichte vor, die Geschlechteraspekte kindlichen Lebens und Lernens untersuchen. Ulrike Schmauch, Gleichgeschlechtliche Orientierungen von Mädchen und Jungen Anja Zeiske/Alexandra Klein/Hans Oswald, Die Lust beim ersten Mal Dieser Band liefert Fachleuten und anderen Interessierten einen Einblick in den aktuellen Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht. Positiv fällt auf, dass auch Zwischenergebnisse vorgestellt werden, was den wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördern dürfte. Sehr schön ist auch die differenzierte und sensible Einführung, die darauf hinweist, dass die Wirklichkeit der Kinder und der Verlauf ihrer geschlechtlichen Entwicklung auch nicht mit noch so zahlreichen empirischen Studien "vermessen" werden kann (12). Trotzdem ist die Wahrnehmung des Faktors Geschlechtsidentität für den erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs ebenso notwendig wie für die Praxis beispielsweise in Kindergarten und Schule. Wichtig hierfür sind kluge Interpretationen der Befunde zum Thema Kinder und Geschlecht. Solche theoretisch fundierten und weiterführenden Reflexionen sind in diesem Buch zu finden. Freiburger GeschlechterStudien 24/2010 ... der Band [liefert] einen facettenreichen Einblick in den Diskurs um Kindheit und Geschlecht, der seinem Anliegen des wissenschaftlichen Austausches u.a. durch die Vorstellung von Zwischenergebnissen, die auf ihre Weiterführung neugierig machen, gerecht wird. ... Lesenswert ist der Band im Sinne des angestrebten Forums für Kolleg/innen, die am Diskurs beteiligt sind, mit ähnlichen Schwerpunkten forschen und Fragen der Geschlechterentwicklung in Forschung und Lehre verfolgen.     In Kindheit und Jugend ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit ästhetischen Darstellungs- und Wahrnehmungsweisen hochgradig relevant. Die Bedeutsamkeit ästhetischer Positionierungen - etwa durch die Wahl der Kleidung oder Accessoires, durch Make-up oder technische Geräte - kann einerseits als Anzeichen einer sehr erfolgreichen Kommerzialisierung von Kindheit und Jugend gedeutet werden. Andererseits zeugt sie aber auch von einem Gespür, mit dem sich Kinder und Jugendliche die Alltagswelt, in der sie leben, zu eigen machen. Um die sozialen Verhältnisse von Ästhetiken, Ökonomien und Generationenbeziehungen in den Blick zu nehmen, versammelt dieser interdisziplinäre Band Forschungsperspektiven zu Alltagsästhetiken in Kindheit und Jugend. In childhood and youth, an engagement with aesthetic modes of representation and perception is of great importance. The significance of aesthetic positionings - for instance through the choice of clothing or accessories, through make-up or gadgets - can on the one hand be interpreted as signs of a successful commercialization of childhood and youth. On the other hand, however, they testify to the savvy with which children and teenagers make their daily world their own and develop their design aesthetics. In order to consider the related social conditions of aesthetics, economies, and inter-generational relationships, this transdisciplinary volume brings together a range of research perspectives on everyday aesthetics in childhood and youth.

Can a man innocently love a boy who is not his own?Using fiction to reveal the truths about families, communities, art objects, love, and mourning, Like a Lake tells the story of ten-year-old Nico, who lives with his father (an Italian- American architect) and his mother (a Japanese-American sculptor who learned how to draw while interned during World War II). Set in the 1960s, this is a story of aesthetic perfection waiting to be broken. Nico's midcentury modern house, with its Italian pottery jars along the outside and its interior lit by Japanese lanterns. The elephant-hide gray, fiberglass-reinforced plastic 1951 Eames rocking chair, with metal legs and birch runners. Clam consommé with kombu, giant kelp, yuzu rind, and a little fennel-in each bowl, two clams opened like a pair of butterflies, symbols of the happy couple. Nico's boyish delight in developing photographs under the red safety light of Coda's "Floating Zendo"- the darkroom boat that he keeps on Lake Tahoe. The lives of Nico, his parents, and Coda embody northern California's postwar landscape, giving way to fissures of alternative lifestyles and poetic visions. Author Carol Mavor addresses the sensuality and complexity of a son's love for his mother and that mother's own erotic response to it. The relationship between the mother and son is paralleled by what it means for a boy to be a model for a male photographer and to be his muse. Just as water can freeze into snow and ice, melt back into water, and steam, love takes on new forms with shifts of atmosphere. Like a Lake's haunting images and sensations stay with the reader

    This bachelor thesis analyzes the coalescence of reality and fantasy as an element of the literary childhood perspective. It proposes the thesis that the uncertain seperation and confluence between the real and the fantastic from the perspective of the literary child is developed as a literary strategy to generate an experiential child perspective, one that emulates the worldview and subjective perceptions of a fictional, literarily constructed child. The paper provides three case studies that consist of a close reading of excerpts from three different child perspectives in contemporary English-language novels: “The Daydreamer” (1994) by Ian McEwan, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” (2005) by Jonathan Safran Foer, and “Gun Love” (2008) by Jennifer Clement.

    Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the "wounded mind". This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

This interest cuts across the traditional boundaries between fiction, autobiography and the literature of trauma and recovery. A Family Occupation is the first English-language introduction to Dutch-language texts written by and about the 'Children of the War' and their cultural context. Their themes and literary conventions throw an interesting light on the Dutch approach to issues such as guilt and innocence, memory and narrative, national identity, child abuse and victimhood.
