"When most people think of wikis, the first--and usually the only--thing that comes to mind is Wikipedia. The editors of Wiki Writing: Collaborative Learning in the College Classroom, Robert E. Cummings and Matt Barton, have assembled a collection of essays that challenges this common misconception, providing an engaging and helpful array of perspectives on the many pressing theoretical and practical issues that wikis raise. Written in an engaging and accessible manner that will appeal to specialists and novices alike, Wiki Writing draws on a wealth of practical classroom experiences with wikis to offer a series of richly detailed and concrete suggestions to help educators realize the potential of these new writing environments."--Publisher's description

This book brings together the work of scholars from around the world - UK, Pakistan, US, South Africa, Hungary, Korea, Mexico - to illustrate and celebrate the many ways in which Roz Ivanic has advanced the academic study of writing. Focusing on writing in different formal contexts of education, from primary through to further and higher education in a range of national contexts, the twenty one original contributions in the book critically engage with theoretical and empirical issues raised in Ivanic's influential body of work. Writing is central to the functioning of developed societies. However, the psychological processes that allow us to transform complex ideas into language and express them on paper or computer screen are poorly understood. "Writing and Cognition" goes some way towards remedying this. It describes new and diverse work both by field leaders and by newer researchers exploring the complex relationships between language, the mind, and the environments in which writers work. Chapters range in focus from a detailed analysis of single-word production to the writing of whole texts. They explore the basic processes involved in writing, the effects of writing on thought and how these vary across different educational and workplace contexts: How do student writers differ in how they approach their text? What processes are associated with the transformation of knowledge during writing? How do the writers of press releases balance the demands of message and reader? Where do writers look when they write? Is memory retrieval easier in writing or when speaking? How does dyslexia affect text production? How does writing by speech-input differ from traditional keyboarding? This volume is essential reading for writing researchers. It will also interest educators, linguists, psychologists, psycholinguists, and anyone who wants to find out more about how thought is transferred to the page. It investigates the psychological processes that allow us to transform complex ideas into language and express them. The chapters examine a wide range of writing contexts and issues. Contributors include field leaders and newer researchers, allowing for a diversity of opinion

Writing is not just about conveying 'content' but also about the representation of self. (One of the reasons people find writing difficult is that they do not feel comfortable with the 'me' they are portraying in their writing. Academic writing in particular often poses a conflict of identity for students in higher education, because the 'self' which is inscribed in academic discourse feels alien to them.)The main claim of this book is that writing is an act of identity in which people align themselves with socio-culturally shaped subject positions, and thereby play their part in reproducing o

At the beginning of a new writing project -- whether it's the first page of a new novel or less ambitious project, writers often experience exhilaration, fear, dread, or a mixture of other emotions. For Kristjana Gunnars, the call of a new project is "like someone you don't know knocking on your door -- you either choose to let the person in or not. It's both exciting and dangerous to start a new manuscript." This book is an engagement with that 'stranger' called writing.; Creative or imaginative writing is a complex process that involves more than intellect alone. Writers make use of everything: their sensibilities, history, culture, knowledge, experience, education, and even their biology. These essays seek out, and gather into a discussion, what writers have said about their own experiences in writing. Although the writers are from around the world and of very different backgrounds, the commonality of their remarks brings home the realisation that writers everywhere are grappling with similar problems -- with the seemingly simple problems of when, where, why, and what to write, but also larger questions such as the relationship between writer and society, or issues of privacy, appropriation, or homelessness. While none of these questions can be definitively answered, they can be fruitfully discussed. Although these essays originated as questions posed in creative writing seminars, they've grown into companion texts for both writers and readers who want to participate in a conversation about what writers do
