Ivar Vegge shows that the ancient Mediterranean world was especially sensitive to idealized praise and blame or threats as hortative means. This is reflected in the pedagogy of the moral philosophers (psychagogy) and in the letter-writing tradition (epistolography), and to some extent also in the rhetorical tradition. Paul utilizes this method in 2 Corinthians. It is argued that idealized praise is manifested in the description of reconciliation in 2 Cor 7:5-16 in order to attain full reconciliation, and in numerous expressions of confidence in the addressee that support various appeals to reconciliation (and/or collection). The harsh and threatening tone in 2 Cor 10-13 is intended to correct the Corinthians, in the hope of achieving reconciliation. The apologetic elements in the letter repeatedly lead up to and substantiate appeals to reconciliation. 2 Corinthians is, therefore, one single letter about reconciliation.

"A wave of reconciliation hit Australia during the 1990s, seeing significant marches, speeches and policies carried out across the country. Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians began imagining race relations in new ways, and articulations of place, belonging, and being together were informing literature of a unique genre. This book explores the political and poetic paradigms of reconciliation represented in Australian writing. The author brings together textual evidence of themes and a vernacular contributing to the emergent genre of 'reconciliatory literature'. The concourse of resistance and reconciliation is explored as a complex process to understanding sovereignty, colonial history, and the future of society. But moreover, this book argues it is creative writing that is most necessary for a deeper understanding of each other, and of place, because it is writing that calls one to witness, to feel, and to imagine all at the same time. The effect of polemical writing is powerful and it is measured in this debut collection of scholarly work"--

Medieval Italian communes are known for their violence, feuds, and vendettas, yet beneath this tumult was a society preoccupied with peace. Peace and Penance in Late Medieval Italy is the first book to examine how civic peacemaking in the age of Dante was forged in the crucible of penitential religious practice.Focusing on Florence in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, an era known for violence and civil discord, Katherine Ludwig Jansen brilliantly illuminates how religious and political leaders used peace agreements for everything from bringing an end to neighborhood quarrels to restoring full citizenship to judicial exiles. She brings to light a treasure trove of unpublished evidence from notarial archives and supports it with sermons, hagiography, political treatises, and chronicle accounts. She paints a vivid picture of life in an Italian commune, a socially and politically unstable world that strove to achieve peace. Jansen also assembles a wealth of visual material from the period, illustrating for the first time how the kiss of peace—a ritual gesture borrowed from the Catholic Mass—was incorporated into the settlement of secular disputes.Breaking new ground in the study of peacemaking in the Middle Ages, Peace and Penance in Late Medieval Italy adds an entirely new dimension to our understanding of Italian culture in this turbulent age by showing how peace was conceived, memorialized, and occasionally achieved

"After their parent's death, siblings Han and Miso are forced into destitution and life upon the streets of Korea. However, Miso is rescued from poverty at the age of ten by an English family, and leaving her younger brother in Korea to fend for himself, she escapes to England and a life of prosperity. Set in modern day Korea, This Isn't Romance opens with the first meeting between the estranged siblings after their separation as children.Miso, driven by guilt over the abandonment, returns to Korea to seek out Han and make amends for the past but in doing so rekindles the dangerous passions within their relationship. What ensues is a provocative and controversial drama incorporating themes of violence, tempestuous incest and self-brutality. However, despite the traumas which haunt the drama and siblings lives, the play closes upon a sense of resolution and hope, presenting the reconciled pair looking forward to their new future together. This Isn't Romance is Chappell's first professional production, an extraordinary debut which won her the Soho Theatre's Verity Bargate Award in 2007. It opened at the Soho Theatre in February 2009"--About the play

Evil, banality and apathy -- The power of humility and compassion -- Ghostly apparitions of the face -- Bio-nationalism and solidarity of the wounded. "Through South Korean filmic and literary texts, this book explores affect and ethics in the healing of historical trauma, as alternatives to the measures of transitional justice in want of national unity. Historians and legal practitioners who deal with transitional justice agree that the relationship between historiography and justice seeking is contested: this book reckons with this question of how much truth-telling from a violent past will lead to healing, forgiving, forgetting and finally overcoming resentment. Nuanced interpretations of South Korean filmic and literary texts are featured, including Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, Bong Joon-ho's Mother and literary texts of Han Kang and Ch'oe Yun, whilst also engaging the ethical and political philosophy of Levinas, Hannah Arendt, and others. Also offered is new and extensive research into the hitherto hidden history of thousands of North Korean war orphans who were sent to Eastern European countries for care. Grappling with the evils of history, the films and novels examined herein find their ultimate themes in compassion, hospitality, humility and solidarity of the wounded. Healing Historical Trauma in South Korean Film and Literature will appeal to students and scholars of film, comparative literature, cultural studies and Korean studies more broadly"--

"The Canadian public largely understands reconciliation as the harmonization of Indigenous-settler relations for the benefit of the nation. But is this really happening? Reconciliation politics, as developed in South America and South Africa, work counter to retributive justice. The Theatre of Regret asks whether - within the contexts of settler colonialism - this approach will ultimately favour the state over the needs and requirements of Indigenous peoples. Interweaving literature, art, and other creative media throughout his analysis, David Gaertner questions the state-centred frameworks of reconciliation by exploring the critical roles that Indigenous and allied authors play in defining, challenging, and refusing settler regret. In 2007, Canada became the first liberal democracy to formally implement a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process, a prominent element of global intrastate politics in the 1990s. Through close examination of core concepts in reconciliation theory - acknowledgement, apology, redress, and forgiveness - Gaertner unpacks reconciliation within the contexts of Canadian settler colonialism and the international history of the TRC. In so doing, he exposes the deeply embedded colonial ideologies that often define reconciliation in settler colonial states. The Theatre of Regret redirects current debates about reconciliation and provides a roadmap for the deconstruction of state-centred discourses of regret."--

Part I: Commending, framing, and explaining the work of reconciliation -- Part II: Pursuing reconciliation through apology, forgiveness, and reparation -- Conclusion: the ongoing work of reconciliation. "In North America, Africa, and across the globe, many societies are deeply divided along racial, ethnic, political, or religious lines by histories of violence and oppression. Bridging such divides requires symbolic action that transcends, reframes, redeems, and repairs-working to restore both fractured relationships and a fragmented moral order. Because such efforts implicate cultures' deepest, most sacred beliefs and values, cultural leaders speaking to reconciliation often draw upon the resources and energy of religious discourse. Speaking to Reconciliation introduces this burgeoning body of faith-informed rhetoric through a selection of important and illustrative speeches. From Abraham Lincoln to Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. to Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel to Jordan's King Abdullah II, and Thich Nhat Hanh to Ireland's President Mary McAleese (and others), readers will encounter diverse yet overlapping ways in which public figures have rhetorically appropriated their religious traditions to warrant a vision of reconciliation in society. These speech texts set forth principles of reconciliation, herald examples of its practice, address legacies of injustice, make apologies for historical wrongs, call for reparations, commend the power of forgiveness, and recommend spiritual practices conducive to reconciliation. Rhetoric scholar John B. Hatch presents a conceptual framework for doing analysis and critique of reconciliation discourse and applies this framework in introductions to the speeches, while also providing relevant historical context as well as insights from other scholars. This book offers readers a springboard for further study and, potentially, inspiration to promote justice and reconciliation in one's own sphere"--
