    This open access book addresses communicative aspects of the current COVID-19 pandemic as well as the epidemic of misinformation from the perspective of argumentation theory. Argumentation theory is uniquely placed to understand and account for the challenges of public reason as expressed through argumentative discourse. The book thus focuses on the extent to which the forms, norms and functions of public argumentation have changed in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. This question is investigated along the three main research lines of the COST Action project CA 17132: European network for Argumentation and Public PoLicY analysis (APPLY): descriptive, normative, and prescriptive. The volume offers a broad range of contributions which treat argumentative phenomena that are directly related to the changes in public discourse in the wake of the outburst of COVID-19. The volume additionally places particular emphasis on expert argumentation, given (i) the importance expert discourse has had over the last two years, and (ii) the challenges that expert argumentation has faced in the public sphere as a result of scientific uncertainty and widespread misinformation. Contributions are divided into three groups, which (i) examine various features and aspects of public and institutional discourse about the COVID-19 pandemic, (ii) scrutinize the way health policies have been discussed, debated, attacked and defended in the public sphere, and (iii) consider a range of proposals meant to improve the quality of public discourse, and public deliberation in particular, in such a way that concrete proposals for argumentative literacy will be brought to light. Overall, this volume constitutes a timely inquiry into all things argumentative in pandemic discourse. This volume is of interest to a broad readership including philosophers, linguists, communication and legal scholars, and members of the wider public who seek to better understand the discourse surrounding communicative phenomena in times of crisis. The author seeks to derive a more general principle from these two words, referring to the representation of experience in different literary texts. If we are talking about the representation of experience, we cannot, by any means, ignore the body that becomes the essential point of reference for human experience. This general principle aims at creating a matter of concept, a somatic criticism project, which is closely related to the issue of rhythm in literary texts - a rhythm understood as an intermediary between the body and the sense of the text.

    We are not in the world to mention is the title of a somewhat unconventional "introduction to rhetoric". It is not an introduction to its history or system, but exposes the specific question interest of rhetoric. Since antiquity, rhetoric has been asking for the conditions of convinced approval as the basis for survival cooperation. The notorious conflict of rhetoric with philosophy resulted from the different functionalization of this consent: Should it merely be condoned as a concession to the intellectual weakness of people in order to win them for the acceptance of truth claims (Plato), or must one in the convinced consent requirement rather see the actual reason for possible truthfulness (so the sophistry)? This conflict was only decided after Hans Blumenberg, when direct paths to the truth could no longer be philosophically promised seriously. As a result, the rhetorical principle of convinced approval could finally become philosophically an attractive validity principle under conditions of modernity. Therefore, if today something rhetoric makes current, then it is the modernity of this conviction or consent-dependent validity principle. Wir sind nicht auf der Welt um zu schweigen ist der Titel einer etwas unkonventionellen „Einleitung in die Rhetorik“. Sie ist keine Einführung in deren Geschichte oder System, sondern legt das spezifische Frageinteresse der Rhetorik frei. Seit der Antike fragt die Rhetorik nach den Bedingungen überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung als Basis überlebensnotwendiger Kooperation. Der notorische Konflikt der Rhetorik mit der Philosophie resultierte aus der unterschiedlichen Funktionalisierung dieser Zustimmungsnötigung: Soll sie bloß als Konzession an die intellektuelle Schwäche von Menschen geduldet werden, um sie so für die Akzeptanz von Wahrheitsansprüchen zu gewinnnen (so Platon), oder muss man in der überzeugten Zustimmungsnötigung vielmehr den eigentlichen Grund möglicher Wahrheitsgeltung sehen (so die Sophistik)? Entschieden wurde dieser Konflikt nach Hans Blumenberg erst, als sich direkte Wege zur Wahrheit philosophisch nicht mehr seriös versprechen ließen. Dadurch konnte das rhetorische Prinzip überzeugter Zustimmungsnötigung endlich auch philosophisch zu einem attraktiven Geltungsprinzip unter Bedingungen der Moderne werden. Wenn daher heute etwas Rhetorik aktuell macht, dann ist es die Modernität dieses überzeugungs- bzw. zustimmungsabhängigen Geltungsprinzips.

Das mächtigste Verhältnis ist jedoch das als Pros hen bekannte, das die Grundlage aller Seins-Analogie-Lehren im Mittelalter bildet. Im 20. Jahrhundert findet das Analogiedenken Eingang in die Phänomenologie und in die Psychoanalyse. Dieser Band stellt die Analogie ausgehend von der Antike über das Mittelalter und die Neuzeit dar und untersucht ihr Potential im Kontext gegenwärtiger philosophischer Diskussionen. Analogy (Latin: proportio) is the epistemological principle par excellence for the ancient world. Plato calls it the "most beautiful bond" that holds the cosmos together. For Aristoteles, analogies between different species and genera should enable a better understanding of structural features in biology. The most powerful relationship, however, is the one known as Pros-hen, which forms the basis of all being-analogy teachings in the Middle Ages. In the 20th century, analogical thinking finds its way into phenomenology and psychoanalysis.     This book argues that positivism, though now the dominant paradigm for both the natural and the human sciences, is intrinsically unfit for the latter. In particular, it is unfit for linguistics and cognitive science, where it is ultimately self-destructive, since it fails to account for causality, while the mind, the primary object of research of the human sciences, cannot be understood unless considered to be an autonomous causal force. Author Pieter Albertus Maria Seuren, who died shortly after this manuscript was finished and after a remarkable career, reviews the history of this issue since the seventeenth century. He focuses on Descartes, Leibniz, British Empiricism and Kant, arguing that neither cognition nor language can be adequately accounted for unless the mind is given its full due. This implies that a distinction must be made-following Alexius Meinong, but against Russell and Quine-between actual and virtual reality. The latter is a product of the causally active mind and a necessary ingredient for the setting up of mental models, without which neither cognition nor language can function. Mental models are coherent sets of propositions, and can be wholly or partially true or false. Positivism rules out mental models, blocking any serious semantics and thereby reducing both language and cognition to caricatures of themselves. Die Ansätze, die eine fundamentale Rolle spielen, umfassen interkulturelle Philosophie, Leibphänomenologie, Kunstgeschichte, Bild- und Medientheorie, Umweltphilosophie, Kulturanthropologie und Sprachphilosophie. Auch die Dimensionen aus dem Osten (Daoismus, Buddhismus, Feng-Shui-Lehre usw.) sind in diesem Zusammenhang einbezogen. The aesthetic concept of atmosphere places human sensitivities under various natural and cultural conditions in the foreground of aesthetic consideration.     Carefully considering the difference in the philosophical potential of page poetry and performance poetry, Karen Simecek argues that it is only by considering them side by side that the unique cognitive value of each can be realised. Focusing on spoken word poetry reveals the importance of voice and embodied words to the differing epistemic rewards of engaging with contemporary works of poetry in both private reading and live performance. This concept of embodied voice progresses a new line of thinking in the cognitivism debate and unlocks the philosophical value of engaging with poetry. Simecek's discussion of performed poetry also advances discussions of affect and experience in contemporary analytic aesthetics which raise new insights and connections within the field. The moral significance of the differing effects of poetry finds comprehensive articulation through a rich philosophical analysis of the thoughts and affects which arise in particular contexts. Simecek concludes that when page poetry is treated as paradigmatic, this enables reflection in the singular, whereas taking poetry in live performance as paradigmatic enables reflection on what is shared and shareable with others.

    In this chapter the author lays out a theoretical groundwork for a semiotic theory of multimodality in the Divine Comedy. The analysis is not comprehensive of all modes, but limited to key-modal forms that Dante’s text authorizes in order to understand the formation of codes based on different forms of articulation and how different modes of articulation may interact with one another in a multimodal arrangement to achieve strong, functional signification in general and, where necessary, working toward the formation of new ontologies intimating human transcendence in terms of signification.

    In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that argue reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a process of critical reflection.

    We are not in the world to mention is the title of a somewhat unconventional "introduction to rhetoric". It is not an introduction to its history or system, but exposes the specific question interest of rhetoric. Since antiquity, rhetoric has been asking for the conditions of convinced approval as the basis for survival cooperation. The notorious conflict of rhetoric with philosophy resulted from the different functionalization of this consent: Should it merely be condoned as a concession to the intellectual weakness of people in order to win them for the acceptance of truth claims (Plato), or must one in the convinced consent requirement rather see the actual reason for possible truthfulness (so the sophistry)? This conflict was only decided after Hans Blumenberg, when direct paths to the truth could no longer be philosophically promised seriously. As a result, the rhetorical principle of convinced approval could finally become philosophically an attractive validity principle under conditions of modernity. Therefore, if today something rhetoric makes current, then it is the modernity of this conviction or consent-dependent validity principle.

    In this study discourse is considered as the act of communication that analyzes its internal dynamic process mediating between the intention of the author embedded in the text, the intention of the text, and various, hypothetical ways in which the receiver may orient a textual discourse. It is a phenomenological model because meaning is generated by the interplay of linguistic and non-linguistic influences. In this instance, a semiotics of multimodality in discourse can prove its efficacy as it steers the reader primarily toward “a general syntax of discursive operations” in that the “universe of signification” is seen as a “praxis rather than as a stable set of fixed forms” of modalities.

    In the Paradiso, Dante attempts to emphasize the heightened tension between the limits of human language and the need to put into words a content that deals with divine ineffability.     Through the burgeoning fields of Posthumanities and Environmental Humanities, this edition examines the changing conception of human subjectivity, agency, and citizenship as shaped by the dynamic interplays between nature, technology, science, and culture.
