    We assess how firm expectations about future production impact current production and pricing decisions. Our analysis is based on a large survey of firms in the German manufacturing sector. To identify the causal effect of expectations, we rely on the timing of survey responses and match firms with the same fundamentals but different views about the future. Firms that expect their production to increase (decrease) in the future are 15 percentage points more (less) likely to raise current production and prices, compared to firms that expect no change in production. In a second step, we show that expectations also matter even if they turn out to be incorrect. Lastly, we aggregate expectation errors across firms and find that they account for about 15 percent of aggregate fluctuations.

    Between late antiquity and the fifteenth century, theologians, philosophers, and poets struggled to articulate the correct relationship between sound and sense, creating taxonomies of sounds based on their capacity to carry meaning. In World of Echo, Adin E. Lears traces how medieval thinkers adopted the concept of noise as a mode of lay understanding grounded in the body and the senses.With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, Lears examines a range of literary genres to highlight the poetic and social effects of this vibrant discourse, offering close readings of works by Chaucer and Langland, as well as the mystics Richard Rolle and Margery Kempe. Each of these writers embraced an embodied experience of language resistant to clear articulation, even as their work reflects inherited anxieties about the appeal of such sensations. A preoccupation with the sound of language emerged in the form of poetic soundplay at the same time that mysticism and other forms of lay piety began to flower in England. As Lears shows, the presence of such emphatic aural texture amplified the cognitive importance of feeling in conjunction with reason and was a means for the laity—including lay women—to cultivate embodied forms of knowledge on their own terms, in precarious relation to existing clerical models of instruction. World of Echo offers a deep history of the cultural and social hierarchies that coalesce around the aesthetic experiences that accentuate ways of knowing outside proscribed models

    Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures. Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Doch das konzentrierte interdisziplinäre 'Hin-Hören' auf solche negierten Laute, also Un-Laute, lässt bisher unerkannte Strukturen zutage treten, deren Analysepotenzial für die Kulturwissenschaften derzeit kaum zu überschätzen ist. Die Beiträge des Bandes konzentrieren sich besonders auf das 20. Jahrhundert, seit die technischen Möglichkeiten der Schallaufzeichnung spezifische Dispositive hervorgebracht haben.

    In an increasingly technologized and connected world, it seems as if noise must be increasing. Noise, however, is a complicated term with a complicated history. Noise can be traced through structures of power, theories of knowledge, communication, and scientific practice, as well as through questions of art, sound, and music. Thus, rather than assume that it must be increasing, this work has focused on better understanding the various ways that noise is defined, what that noise can do, and how we can use noise as a strategically political tactic. Noise Thinks the Anthropocene is a textual experiment in noise poetics that uses the growing body of research into noise as source material. It is an experiment in that it results from indeterminate means, alternative grammar, and experimental thinking. The outcome was not predetermined. It uses noise to explain, elucidate, and evoke (akin to other poetic forms) within the textual milieu in a manner that seeks to be less determinate and more improvisational than conventional writing. Noise Thinks the Anthropocene argues that noise poetics is a necessary form for addressing political inequality, coexistence with the (nonhuman) other, the ecological crisis, and sustainability because it approaches these issues as a system of interconnected fragments and excesses and thus has the potential to reach or envision solutions in novel ways

    Between late antiquity and the fifteenth century, theologians, philosophers, and poets struggled to articulate the correct relationship between sound and sense, creating taxonomies of sounds based on their capacity to carry meaning. In World of Echo, Adin E. Lears traces how medieval thinkers adopted the concept of noise as a mode of lay understanding grounded in the body and the senses.With a broadly interdisciplinary approach, Lears examines a range of literary genres to highlight the poetic and social effects of this vibrant discourse, offering close readings of works by Chaucer and Langland, as well as the mystics Richard Rolle and Margery Kempe. Each of these writers embraced an embodied experience of language resistant to clear articulation, even as their work reflects inherited anxieties about the appeal of such sensations. A preoccupation with the sound of language emerged in the form of poetic soundplay at the same time that mysticism and other forms of lay piety began to flower in England. As Lears shows, the presence of such emphatic aural texture amplified the cognitive importance of feeling in conjunction with reason and was a means for the laity—including lay women—to cultivate embodied forms of knowledge on their own terms, in precarious relation to existing clerical models of instruction.     Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Doch das konzentrierte interdisziplinäre 'Hin-Hören' auf solche negierten Laute, also Un-Laute, lässt bisher unerkannte Strukturen zutage treten, deren Analysepotenzial für die Kulturwissenschaften derzeit kaum zu überschätzen ist. Die Beiträge des Bandes konzentrieren sich besonders auf das 20. Jahrhundert, seit die technischen Möglichkeiten der Schallaufzeichnung spezifische Dispositive hervorgebracht haben
