    On considère souvent que la modernité poétique se caractérise par une tension vers le silence, l’effacement, la fragmentation. Or certains poètes français de la seconde moitié du XXe s. revendiquent explicitement le désir et le droit d’une confrontation au grand Tout, dans des œuvres élaborant, selon un héritage romantique, diverses stratégies de totalisation poétique : ainsi, en particulier, d’André Frénaud, Patrice de La Tour du Pin et Pierre Emmanuel. Sous cet apparent anachronisme de leurs œuvres se laisse en réalité lire une tension, où s’exprime la dualité sémantique de la notion de totalité – entre intensivité et extensivité : le Livre total prétend-il au pouvoir de ramener le multiple à un Tout homogène, ou s’ouvre-t-il à tout sans nier l’infini ? La rupture instaurée par la Seconde Guerre mondiale exacerbe cette incertitude : elle jette en effet le doute sur l’ambition de totalité qui, dans sa dimension intensive, court un risque d’ordre totalitaire – celui de la parole définitive qui nie le reste du monde. Loin de rester aveugle à un tel risque, les trois poètes en question l’exposent : la tentation du tout se trouve limitée par la singularité irréductible des êtres et des choses. Subissant alors une détotalisation due à la crise axiologique d’une posture énonciative compromise, les œuvres acceptent la blessure de l’altérité qui les fragmente. Parce qu’elle fonde sur une éthique de la relation la possibilité de jouer librement le jeu de la multiplicité extensive, la poésie réinvente son droit, sans doute précaire, à se développer comme dynamique de totalisation : l’œuvre existe dès lors pour aboutir au monde Poetic modernity is often said to be typified by its inclination towards silence, self-effacement, and fragmentation. Yet some poets belonging with the second half of the XXth century explicitly claim their desire and their right to confront the Great Totality. They do so in works that elaborate various strategies of poetic totalization in keeping with a Romantic tradition : that is particularly the case of André Frénaud, Patrice de La Tour du Pin and Pierre Emmanuel. In spite of their apparent anachronism, their works actually imply a tension that expresses the semantic dualism of the notion of totality, between intension (wholeness) and extension (allness) : does the whole-inclusive and self-contained Book ambition the fusing of multiplicity into a homogeneous whole, or does it open up to every thing without denying the infinite ? The breaking off induced by World War II enhances this problem, questioning the ambition of intensive totality and its inner risk of totalitarianism : that of the final Word which denies the rest of the world. Far from being blind to that risk, the three poets we study exhibit it. The temptation of totality is consequently checked by the irreducible singularity of beings and things. Undergoing a de-totalization caused by the axiological crisis of a compromised enunciatory posture, the works willingly suffer the injury of otherness that fragments them. Poetry is able to play the game of an extensive multiplicity : this capacity being grounded on an ethic of relationships, it thus reinvents its right to develop according to a totalizing dynamics. Therefore, the work exist by virtue of its issuing into the world

    This is a collection of four essays on aesthetic, ethical, and political issues by Dieter Henrich, the preeminent Kant scholar in Germany today. Although his interests have ranged widely, he is perhaps best known for rekindling interest in the great classical German tradition from Kant to Hegel. The first essay summarizes Henrich's researches into the development of Kant's moral philosophy. It shows that the architecture of the third Critique depends upon a change in Kant's notion of a philosophical system, which in turn emerged from an important change in the foundation of Kant's moral philosophy. This change is shown to occur in the course of his work and reflections on the "Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals." Of special interest in this essay is Henrich's intriguing and wholly new account of the relation between Kant and Rousseau In the second essay, Henrich analyzes the interrelations between Kant's aesthetics and his cognitive theories, concluding that though Kant has opened up an important and fruitful avenue of questioning, the problems he addresses are not yet resolved. Henrich is convinced that "even after two hundred years it remains promising to pursue such a ?Kantian? program." The third essay argues that the justification of the claim that human rights are universally valid requires reference to a moral image of the world. To employ Kant's notion of a moral image of the world without ignoring the insights and experiences of this century requires, to be sure, drastic changes in the content of such an image, but Henrich explains, at least in part, what its content might be for our time In an ambitious concluding essay, Henrich compares the development of the political process of the French Revolution and the course of classical German philosophy, raises the general question of the relation between political processes and theorizing, and argues that both the project of political liberty set in motion by the French Revolution and the projects of classical German philosophy remain incomplete

Pourtant, elle n'est pas toujours provoquée par des choix sadiques, pas plus qu'elle ne surgit exclusivement de situations exceptionnelles. On la repère aussi dans des contextes plus ordinaires, comme l'action sociale ou la santé publique. Du triage des blessés les plus graves sur un champ de bataille à l'évacuation de naufragés perdus en mer, de l'exfiltration de quelques-uns au cours d'un génocide à l'ordre de vaccination en cas de pandémie, des situation extrêmes aux dilemmes quotidiens de l'éthique médicale se reconnait le scénario d'une époque travaillée par ces questions dans son quotidien et sa mémoire blessée. Doit-on, et comment, réfléchir publiquement à ces choix de l'ombre ?

    In The Philosophy of the Limit Drucilla Cornell examines the relationship of deconstruction to questions of ethics, justice, and legal interpretation. She argues that renaming deconstruction "the philosophy of the limit" will allow us to be more precise about what deconstruction actually is philosophically and hence to articulate more clearly its significance for law. Cornell explores the ethical and juridical significance of the so-called postmodern rebellion against metaphysics. A shared ethical rebellion links philosophers as different as Theodor Adorno, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Lacan, and Emmanuel Levinas. Together they present a new ethical configuration, new in its difference from both the critical social theory of Jurgen Habermas and the analytic jurisprudence of Nagel and Rawls. A key aspect of this newness is the centrality given to the relationship between questions of ethics and sexual difference Cornell argues that the appeal of Lacan's analysis to feminists is that it helps to explain the profound hold the gender hierarchy has over Western culture, including its theories of political transformation. Cornell examines Derrida's position on the significance of the gender hierarchy in philosophy and explores its ethical and political importance. Derrida's intervention against legal positivism has important implications for the legal reforms necessary to protect marginalized groups. His emphasis on the limit, she argues, is crucial to those whose well-being and very lives may depend on legal transformation, women and homosexuals, for example. Cornell's focus on the importance of the limit and the centrality of the gender hierarchy allows her to offer a view of jurisprudence different from both critical social theory and analytic jurisprudence In 1992, as we watch the long-fought-for civil rights of women systematically overturned, we have reason to think about how the connections she makes shed light on an underlying truth of our social, political, and legal reality

    With this, the first volume in the Oxford philosophical monographs series, Paul Crowther breaks new ground by providing what is probably the first study in any language to be devoted exclusively to Kant's theory of the sublime. It fills a gap in an area of scholarship where Kant makes crucial links between morality and aesthetics and will be particularly useful for Continental philosophers, among whom the Kantian sublime is currently receiving widespread discussion in debates about the nature of postmodernism. Crowther's arguments center on the links which Kant makes between morality and aesthetics, and seek ultimately to modify Kant's approach in order to establish the sublime as a viable aesthetic concept with a broader cultural significance.
