The present essay examines the semiotics of Djudeo-Espanyol in the novel Tela de sevoya (2012) and the poetry collection Ansina (2015) by Myriam Moscona. While in some of her previous volumes of poetry Moscona explores her Sephardic identity –in part through language– in these two recent works Djudeo-Espanyol takes center stage not only as a marker of identity, but as integral to the process of liteary creation. In both the autobiographical novel and the volumen of poetry, the use and function of Djudeo-Espanyol in conjunction with Spanish, or as the sole language (as is the case with Ansina), communicates and indeed performs language in unique ways. The objective of the essay is to explore the mulitple ways in which Djudeo-Espanyol, as a language of creation and as affective linguistic register, transfers meaning to the reader.

Abstract ; This article aims to give an overview of the life of an Irish accused by the Court of the Inquisition in Mexico, in the seventeenth century, considered a heretic and a rebel seeking independence from New Spain. His captivity for 17 years, from 1642 until his death in 1659, made his prison known to the Viceroy and the King in Spain. In it he found the Judaizers who had arrived in that city from Portugal in search of economic improvements and freedom of worship. Coincided the years of 1642 to 1649 with these Crypto-Jews in jail and wrote a lawsuit against the Inquisitors for the bad treatment that was given to the prisoners and especially to them. Guillén de Lampart or Lamport as some called him was the defender of these Crypto-Jews, which came out in the four autos de fe of that 17th century, ending with the presence of the Judaizers in New Spain.

Abstract ; The construction of the memory of immigrants from the Middle East went through several stages. Lebanese Maronites and Jews from the region left their places of origin to "make America" without a national identity; the latter emerged in exile. It developed with the events that took place in the territories that expelled them.

Abstract ; This article aims to build the biographical narrative of Aslan, a Jew from Aleppo origin, who immigrated to Mexico at the beginning of the 20th Century. In this story, personal, family, community, local and national aspects converge, whose organizing axis is the economic itinerary in the context of the growth of the urban capitalism in Mexico City. It seeks to characterize the ethos of the life world of Aslán, that is, that cultural nucleus that is related to social identities, with systems of shared representations, with collective consciousness, with worldviews and other habits, through the description of the business of financial intermediation and the particularities of the economic interactions that took place in that context. Aslan's life story unfolds and unravels in family succession and business legacy. Finally, a reflective note is elaborated on the achievements and limitations of their experience from the diverse positions of those who were part of that history and from the interpretative perspective of the researcher. To remember, deconstruct and co-construct the experience of Aslán tries not only to present an individual biography, but to recreate an epoch, a world of life where one's experience makes sense in the ethos of the intersubjective context in which it is inserted.

Abstract ; Figures and images of Colonia Condesa in Todo aquí es polvo (2010), posthumous book of memories by Esther Seligson, as well as in other fiction texts where she recovers moments of her urban family life during childhood and adolescence, but without the intention of writing ethnic neighborhood literature, nor to compose a city-text of Mexico City. In the second part, the Seligsonian strategy of revealing a deep and open Mexico in a syncretic semantic field where narrative and lexical voices of the Nahuatl legacy, Talmudic Judaism and Kabbalist, as well as the sacred culture of Tibet and Hinduism, are analyzed.

Abstract ; ¿How does one re-member the histories of those whose sex has been denied by History, or, in the words of Judith Butler, "the sex that cannot be thought, a linguistic absence and opacity" (Butler 1999: 13)? This essay explores this question in the two poems annexed to “El retablo de sodomitas novohispanos” and incorporated into La sodomía en la Nueva España (2010) by the Mexican poet, Luis Felipe Fabre: 'Villancicos del Sto. Niño de las Quemaduras' and 'El monumento fúnebre a Gerónimo Calbo'. More specifically it demonstrates how, through a combination of intertextual parody and ekphrastic writing, the two texts activate an anti-heteronormative, transgressive, irreverent, and simultaneously poignant reflection focused on the burning at the stake of fourteen persons for the sin of sodomy in Mexico City on the 6th of November of 1658. Through this story of persecution from the era of Colonial Mexico, finally, the essay argues, the poems invite consideration of the persistence of the same repressive heteronormative powers in the present that determined the horrors of the past.

Abstract ; Much research has been done regarding male queer narratives in contemporary Mexican literature. However, lesbianism has been greatly neglected by criticism. Although works such as Rosamaría Roffiel’s Amora (1989) or Sara Levi Calderón’s Dos mujeres (1990) have garnered some academic attention, little has been written about subsequent narratives. This article moves beyond those works whose main focus is lesbianism in order to understand how peripheral same-sex desire serves to undermine heteronormative patriarcal notions. I analyze Cristina Rivera Garza’s La cresta de Ilión (2002) and Valeria Luiselli’s Los ingrávidos (2011). Because these narratives are not associated with depictions of lesbianism, my work shows how transgressive female desire pervades contemporary Mexican literature.

Abstract ; The present article offers an interpretation of Alberto Chimal’s first novel, The Slaves, published by this Mexican author in 2009, a novel proposing an analysis of sadomasochistic sexual relations. In the center of the narration, we encounter two couples, both homosexual, acting out various sadomasochistic practices ‒ some of them of an extreme nature: On the one hand, two women, one of them already older (Marlene) and (supposedly) the director of pornographic movies, and the other, almost still a girl (Yuyis) live a relation of dominance and submission with the noteworthy complication that Marlene could even be the mother of her "slave girl". The second couple is formed by two men: Golo, a decadent millionaire, and his "slave" nicknamed "Mundo" ('World') who is frequently reduced to something like a dog or even an unanimated object. The whole novel consists of various sequences narrating what the two couples experience in their sex life until a final turning point is reached with the forced separation in both cases. Due to a narrative structure that makes as understand that we as readers depend completely on an unreliable narrator, even the most brutal atrocities tend to dissipate in the fog of probably fictitious games showing us the trompe-l'œil of a monstrous storyline of serial sex crimes. With this peculiar narrative structure in mind, I emphasize the 'ludic' character of sadomasochistic 'plays' narrated all through the novel, trying to understand what 'sadomasochism' means as a sexual practice or identity and what consequences could be drawn from these practices with regard to the construction of different genders (in the case of this novel: masculine and feminine).

Abstract ; This article employs Igor Primoratz’s ethics of sexuality to analyze the incestuous relationship between a thirteen year old girl and her uncle in the novel El lenguaje the las orquídeas (2007), by Adriana González Mateos. My critical inquiry starts with a basic question: What hides behind the multiple ways in which incest is represented here? The obvious answer would be: the disintegration of the family. By analogy, if the family falls apart, so does the whole country. The Mexican nation here, as Doris Summers would say, no longer needs incest to consolidate itself, perhaps because this concept is undergoing profound transformations. Due to continuous social and cultural shifts, as well as the profound mark feminist and gay liberation movements have left on the Mexican society, the novel discussed here posits a new vision of incest. One that leaves behind the pater familias in order to reveal the growing importance of women in society and their role in the formation (or disintegration for that matter) of the family nucleus.

Abstract ; Provoked by the outbreak of femicides in Ciudad Juárez in the 1990s, a wave of socially critical narrative has circulated in Mexico since the turn of the twenty-first century. Taking into account this broader corpus of literature, the article contextualizes Antonio Ortuño’s 2014 novel La fila india within a unique sector of this critical narrative, which highlights the interaction of gender violence and migration. The violent novel exposes an expansive social hierarchy that has developed in response to migration in Mexico, and which discriminates against all women, but targets migrant women in particular. Ortuño steps away from traditional characterizations of the Third World female migrant as a helpless victim, and instead orients his narrative around this figure’s means of achieving agency in the face of intense discrimination and violence. The article demonstrates how Ortuño interweaves systemic, symbolic, and subjective violence and subverts the chingón-chingada relationship in order to offer a pessimistic, but revolutionary view of both Mexican and Central American women’s future in Mexico. By tracing narrative strategies that normalize violence and uncovering Ortuño’s connection of gender and ethnic discrimination, the author invites us to reconsider both the genre of social criticism in Mexico and the politics of female identity in the face of violence.

Abstract ; In Guadalupe Nettel’s narratives, the representation of disability deconstructs various Latin American paradigms of 'normalcy', within a global context. Drawing primarily from her novel, Después del invierno (2014), this study focuses on the processes that confront the restrictive and oppressive notions of 'the feminine' and 'the masculine'. Following theoretical postulates that define disability as a social construction, as well as contemporary theories on gender and masculinities, this essay seeks to uncover the ways in which the normalization of otherness reveals the elastic and malleable identity of the protagonists. Consequently, the study also traces the reciprocal connection between gender and disability as portrayed in the novel, as well as the social perception of disability.

Abstract ; Ana Clavel’s second novel, Shipwrecked Body (2005), focuses on the identity crisis experienced by Antonia, who awakens one morning in a man’s body and asks herself if she continues to be the same or if her new body has made her into a different person. In contrast to novels that chart identity through the exploration of the past, Antonia’s search for selfhood gravitates around her current physical, social and cultural circumstances. The present study analyzes the stages of Antonia’s masculine socialization as she attempts to resolve the discord between her female identity and her new biological sex. During the process of masculinization that she endures, Antonia imitates masculine normative behaviors and suppresses the characteristics that feminize her, which positions her new identity as a performative act. The objective of the present study, therefore, is to discuss the ways in which Clavel situates masculinity as a social construct through an examination of the protagonist’s conditioning and her active and voluntary cultivation of manhood for the sake of enjoying the privileges afforded to men in a patriarchal society.

Abstract ; The present essay examines the place of Ana Clavel in critical studies on contemporary Mexican fiction. Instead of situating her production vis-à-vis female contemporaries in what has been labeled the Boom Femenino, I argue that Clavel’s novels embody the ethos of a queer literature. A queer literature unpacks, decenters, and disobeys norms of gender, sex, and sexuality, and favors the posing of questions versus the providing of neatly packaged answers. Moving away from the subject, it mobilizes these same actions towards the communal and the national. Queer literature moves against the conventions of narrative; it breaks through the limits of the textual to render insufficient the power of the word. By reading the author’s meditation on sex, gender, and sexuality (especially as they relate to the urban space in Cuerpo náufrago), the essay furthers that Clavel’s fiction may best be understood within a genealogy of queer Mexican texts.

Abstract ; The trial of the Inquisition against Margarita Moreira allows us to see the fascinating world of the groups of Crypto-Jews in New Spain in the 17th century. As a consequence of political and historical developments, a large group of conversos from the Iberian Peninsula settled in Brazil, Peru or Mexico at the time and immerse themselves in several economic activities that brought prosperity to many of them. In the first half of the 17th century, the Inquisition in several parts of America made a concerted effort towards making them disappear through numerous inquisitional trials, of which Margarita Moreira´s case is a paramount example.

Abstract ; The article analyzes the play and festejo Los empeños de una casa by the Mexican Golden Age playwright Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and claims that the play is a transcultural creation. In the play, the different “rooms” of the house, meaning the different parts of the festejo, allude to other cultural spaces, whether they be texts from the canon of Spanish Golden Age theater (for example by Calderón de la Barca) or Latin-American texts and spaces. The allusions to Latin-American spaces run throughout the festejo and frame it as a creole play by adapting the Spanish genre to the reality and the esthetic and epistemic context of Colonial Mexico. The article applies Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the baroque fold in order to understand the transcultural aspects of Sor Juana’s play in terms of the construction of semantic spaces. The interior and exterior spaces of Los empeños de una casa are interwoven: the house is a baroque labyrinth in which comic fortunes and misfortunes are expressed as an oscillating game between the visible and the invisible, the ephemeral and the stable. In a first step we will analyze the loa and its allegorical spaces. Secondly, we will focus on the comedia and its ironic and insightful way to challenge genre conventions. In a final step, we will read the Sainete Segundo as a commentary on creole theatre and its spaces.

Abstract ; The article investigates the transcultural exchanges and the traces of a creole consciousness in the loa of the auto sacramental El Divino Narciso by Juana Inés de la Cruz. Our reading of this allegorical play takes the concept of belonging as a tool for the analysis of the multifaceted dynamics of cultural identification and differentiation that are deployed in this literary text from the Mexican colonial baroque of the 17th century. We will focus on three dimensions on which the author introduces differentiations that structure the topic and the action of the play: the geocultural dimension, the ethic dimension and the geopolitical dimension. In doing so, we propose to consider Juana’s creole consciousness not so much as an identity that she possesses but rather as the totality of the complex and sometimes contradictory practices of belonging that are expressed in her texts.

Abstract ; Luis de Carvajal, el Mozo, was part of a large Converso family that moved from Spain to New Spain (Colonial Mexico) in 1580. While some members of his family, like his brother Gaspar, a Dominican friar, and his uncle, Luis de Carvajal, el Viejo, a regional governor, were devout Catholics, Luis and most of his immediate family were passionately devoted to crypto-Judaism. Luis crafts a powerful narrative of religious sacrifice and creativity in his spiritual autobiography (1589-95). His family members play a central role in this religious drama. As Luis is writing his autobiography the Church is reinvigorating the centrality and religious vitality of marriage and family life. Joseph, the husband of Mary, undergoes an image transformation turning the often sidelined, frail yet pious companion of Mary, into a vigorous, handsome man who provides for and protects his wife and child. This reinvigoration of the image of Joseph is part of a larger post-Tridentine push to emphasize the importance of the sacrament of marriage and the sacred nature of family life. In this essay, I explore the matrix of ideas and images operating within the post-Tridentine Iberian religious imaginary, both in its hegemonic Catholic and its subversive crypto-Jewish iterations.
