    The Bibliotheca of Pseudo-Apollodorus, perhaps the best-known mythographic text, stands out for its comprehensive aim and state of preservation. The handbook has regularly been disregarded as a repository of 'standard' myths or as a primary witness to archaic stories, a reductive view at once underestimating and romanticizing the merits of the Bibliotheca. This monograph unlocks the Bibliotheca as a literary work in its own right by offering the first systematic commentary on an essential selection, the Cretan and Theban myths in Bibl. III.1-56, and by presenting an in-depth analysis of the text. In so doing, this volume closes a gap in current research, from which a philological commentary is entirely missing. The main part of the study focuses on various aspects of composition and organization by addressing structuring principles, narratorial interventions, and the author's method and sources. It lays to rest persistent misconceptions about the representative character of the Bibliotheca's myths, the author's merits, and his source use, all of which have divided the scholarship to this date. In addition, it provides an update on the author, date, purpose and readership, text history, and book division of the Bibliotheca

Sein Titel ‚Cicero ethicus‘ will dabei pointiert kenntlich machen, dass hier ein Blick auf den römischen Autor geworfen wird, der in ihm nicht nur den Vermittler hellenistischer Lehren, sondern einen philosophischen Autor mit eigenem ethischen Anspruch und Konzept erkennt. Hierzu wenden sich die acht Beiträge des Sammelbandes den im Herbst 45 v. Chr. entstandenen ‚Tusculanae disputationes‘ zu und unterziehen sie aus philosophiegeschichtlichen, philologischen und literarischen Perspektiven einem Vergleich mit dem kurz zuvor verfassten Werk ‚De finibus bonorum et malorum‘. Dieser komparative Ansatz versteht sich als Plädoyer dafür, dass sich Ciceros Ethik, die als innovative Synthese von hellenistischer Philosophie und römischer Weltorientierung beschreibbar ist, nur in einer werkübergreifenden Analyse erschließen lässt, so formal unterschiedlich sich seine Schriften im Einzelnen auch präsentieren mögen.

    Der ‚Reinhart Fuchs‘ inszeniert, ausgehend von der Erkrankung des Löwenkönigs, eine substanzielle Verunsicherung und Auflösung von Ordnungen und Ordnungsgewissheit. Die fundamentale ‚füchsische Desintegration‘ umfasst diverse Bezugsfelder und Ebenen (literarische, sprachliche, religiöse, rechtliche, soziale, politische u. a. m.). Die vorliegende Studie verbindet philologisch fundierte Textinterpretationen des ‚Reinhart Fuchs‘ daher mit einer weiten literar- und kulturhistorischen Kontextualisierung. Erstmals werden dabei systematisch Ansätze der ‚Cultural Literary Animal Studies‘ für die Analyse und Interpretation des mittelhochdeutschen Fuchsepos herangezogen. Ergänzt werden die Untersuchungen um vergleichende Lektüren des ‚Roman de Renart‘. Die untersuchten altfranzösischen Passagen werden auf Basis aktueller Editionen neu ins Deutsche übersetzt. Vorgelegt wird so eine nuancierte Gesamtinterpretation des ‚Reinhart Fuchs‘, die der Radikalität und Schonungslosigkeit des Tierepos Rechnung trägt.

    The modern concept of passing leisure hours pleasantly would, in the Middle Ages, have fallen under the rubric of Sloth, a deadly sin. Yet aristocrats of past centuries were not always absorbed in affairs of state or warfare. What did they do in moments of peace, "downtime" as we might call it today? In this collection of essays, scholars from various disciplines investigate courtly modes of entertainment ranging from the vigorous to the intellectual: hunting, jousting, horse racing; physical and verbal games; reading, writing, and book ownership. Favorite pastimes spanned differences of gender and age, and crossed geographical and cultural boundaries. Literary and historical examples come from England, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Courtly Pastimes analyzes the underlying rationales for such activities: to display power and prestige, to acquire cultural capital, to instill a sense of community, or to build diplomatic alliances. Performativity so crucial in social rituals could become transgressive if taken to extremes. Certain chapters explore the spaces of courtliness: literal or imaginary; man-made, natural, or a hybrid of both. Other chapters concern materiality and visual elements associated with courtly pastimes: from humble children's toys and playthings to elite tournament attire, castle murals, and manuscript illuminations

    This book is the first study to focus on a metaliterary interpretation of Maximianus' Elegies, and aims to fill a major gap in international literature concerning the thoughts of the last love elegist on the evolution and renovation of the genre of love elegy during Late Antiquity.The book includes all known subjects of Maximianus' poetry (e.g., the division of his work into six elegies, its attribution to Cornelius Gallus by Pomponius Gauricus in 1502, its reception in recent years, the intellectual milieu of the Ostrogothic Italy, the historical contextualization of his poetry, the Appendix Maximiani, the impact of the Augustan love elegy (and especially Ovid's) upon it, etc.), in order to offer a more complete picture of it. However, the content of the book is predominantly prototype, as it examines subjects that have not previously been discussed in the past. These include: a) The generic interaction between the 'host' genre of love elegy, and several 'guest' genres (e.g., Roman comedy, epic, pastoral); b) The hidden metapoetic discourse regarding the genre of love elegy itself.The book is intended for scholars or students working on or interested in Roman love elegy and its generic evolution in Late Antiquity

    The volume brings together contributions on 15th and 16th century translation throughout Europe (in particular Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and England). Whilst studies of the reception of ancient Greek drama in this period have generally focused on one national tradition, this book widens the geographical and linguistic scope so as to approach it as a European phenomenon. Latin translations are particularly emblematic of this broader scope: translators from all over Europe latinised Greek drama and, as they did so, developed networks of translators and practices of translation that could transcend national borders. The chapters collected here demonstrate that translation theory and practice did not develop in national isolation, but were part of a larger European phenomenon, nourished by common references to Biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities, and honed by common religious and scholarly controversies. In addition to situating these texts in the wider context of the reception of Greek drama in the early modern period, this volume opens avenues for theoretical debate about translation practices and discourses on translation, and on how they map on to twenty-first-century terminology

Follow the author and the historical protagonists of his tales in a journey through a fragmentary shape-shifting corpus, from the medieval translations of Aristotle to pornographic animal tales carved on church columns. The book explains how art and literature were intertwined, how they evolved from the times of Nicetas Choniates to those of Isabella of Lusignan, and under what influences. It is based on the assumption that history is a form of literature, as they both share an “arbitrary distribution of emphasis” (Isaiah Berlin)

    As a representative of the intellectual elites of his time, Sebastian Brant (1457–1521) was active in various cultural fields (Latin and German poetry, pious literature and theology, law, book illustration). The contributions in this conference volume, which marks the 500th anniversary of Brant’s death, documents his influence and reach, which have extended far beyond their time, in those fields Sebastian Brant, Basler Jurist und (ab 1501) Syndikus, Diplomat und Kanzler der Freien Reichsstadt Straßburg, gehört zu den einflussreichen Akteuren seiner Zeit. Gewirkt hat er als Jurist und Hrsg. zentraler Rechtstexte, als Bearbeiter von Werken der Patristik, Mitarbeiter an einer sechsbändigen Vulgata-Ausgabe, der ersten europäischen Petrarca-Edition, als engagierter Verteidiger des Dogmas der Unbefleckten Empfängnis Mariens, als Dichter in lateinischer und deutscher Sprache, als Concepteur umfangreicher Holzschnittserien, als Verfasser tagesaktueller Gelegenheitsdichtungen, schließlich auch des „Narrenschiffs“, das europaweite Verbreitung bis ins 18. Jh. gefunden hat. Eine anlässlich von Brants 500. Todestag veranstaltete Tagung zielte darauf, die Tätigkeitsfelder, den intellektuellen Horizont und das Weiterwirken Brants in exemplarischen Untersuchungen zur würdigen. Aus den Perspektiven des Kanonischen und Römischen Rechts, der Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft, der Germanistik wie auch der Latinistik sowie der material- und quellenbezogenen Geschichtswissenschaft sind Werk und Wirken Brants untersucht worden von Wissenschaftler*innen aus Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz

    Medieval philosophy is primarily associated today with university-based disputations and the authorities cited in those disputations. In their own time, however, scholastic debates were recognized as just one part of wide-ranging philosophical and theological discussions. A Hidden Wisdom breaks new ground by drawing attention to another crucial component of these conversations: the Christian contemplative tradition. The period from 1200 to 1500, in particular, saw a dramatic increase in the production and consumption of mystical and contemplative literature in the 'Christian West', by laypeople as well as religious scholars, women as well as men. A Hidden Wisdom focuses on five topics of particular interest to both scholastics and contemplatives in this period, namely, self-knowledge, reason and its limits, love and the will, persons, and immortality and the afterlife. This focus centers the(often overlooked) contributions of medieval women and demonstrates that when we re-unite scholasticism with its contemplative counterpart, we gain not only a more accurate understanding of the scope of medieval Christian philosophy and theology but also an increased awareness of a deeply practical tradition thatbuilds up as well as tears down, generates as well as deconstructs.The book's treatment of topics and figures is meant to be representative rather than exhaustive: a tasting menu, rather than a comprehensive study. The choice of topics offers a series of 'hooks' for philosophers to connect their own interests to issues central to medieval contemplative philosophy, while also providing medievalists in other disciplines a fresh lens through which to view these texts

An engaging exploration of book history."-Kirkus Reviews For centuries, premodern societies recorded and preserved much of their written cultures on parchment: the rendered skins of sheep, cows, goats, camels, deer, gazelles, and other creatures. These remains make up a significant portion of the era's surviving historical record. In a study spanning three millennia and twenty languages, Bruce Holsinger explores this animal archive as it shaped the inheritance of the Euro-Mediterranean world, from the leather rolls of ancient Egypt to the Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Holsinger discusses the making of parchment past and present, the nature of the medium as a biomolecular record of faunal life and environmental history, the knotty question of "uterine vellum," and the imaginative role of parchment in the works of St. Augustine, William Shakespeare, and a range of Jewish rabbinic writers of the medieval era. Closely informed by the handicraft of contemporary makers, painters, and sculptors, the book draws on a vast array of sources-codices and scrolls, documents and ephemera, works of craft and art-that speak to the vitality of parchment across epochs and continents. At the center of On Parchment is the vexed relationship of human beings to the myriad slaughtered beasts whose remains make up this vast record: a relationship of dominion and compassion, of brutality and empathy

    "The first English-language monograph on a significant yet often-neglected Latin Christian history from late antiquity (4th century CE), this book introduces a little-known text and shows how Classical culture and Bible heroes helped Christians conceptualize Jewish history in late antiquity"-- In this volume, Carson Bay focuses on an important but neglected work of Late Antiquity: Pseudo-Hegesippus' On the Destruction of Jerusalem (De Excidio Hierosolymitano), a Latin history of later Second Temple Judaism written during the fourth century CE. Bay explores the presence of so many Old Testament figures in a work that recounts the Roman-Jewish War (66-73 CE) and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE. By applying the lens of Roman exemplarity to Pseudo-Hegesippus, he elucidates new facets of Biblical reception, history-writing, and anti-Judaism in a text from the formative first century of Christian Empire. The author also offers new insights into the Christian historiographical imagination and how Biblical heroes and Classical culture helped Christians to write anti-Jewish history. Revealing novel aspects of the influence of the Classical literary tradition on early Christian texts, this book also newly questions the age-old distinction between the Christian and the Classical (or 'pagan') in the ancient Mediterranean world

    What did Danes and Swedes in the Middle Ages imagine and write about Jews and Judaism? This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200-1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in different texts, especially miracle tales, exempla, sermons, and Passion treaties, is examined to show how writers employed the figure of the Jew to address doubts concerning doctrine and heresy, fears of violence and mass death, and questions of emotions and sexuality. Volume 2 contains diplomatic editions of 54 texts in Old Danish and Swedish together with translations into English that make these sources available to an international audience for the first time and demonstrate how the image of the Jew was created in medieval Scandinavia

    Ancient literary critics were struck by what they described as Thucydides' "nominal style," a term that refers to Thucydides' fondness for abstract nominal phrases. As this book shows, Thucydides frequently uses these phrases instead of approximately synonymous verbal and personal constructions. These stylistic choices tend to deemphasize human agency: people find themselves in a passive role, exposed to incidents happening to them rather than being actively incharge of events. Thus, the analysis of the abstract style raises the question of necessity in Thucydides. On numerous occasions, Thucydides and his speakers use impersonal and passive language to stress the subjection of human beings to transpersonal forces that manifest themselves in collective passions and an inherent dynamic of events. These factors are constitutive of the human condition and become a substitute for the notion of divine fatalism prevalent in earlier Greek thought. Yet Thucydidean necessity is not absolute. It stands in the tradition of a type of fatalism that one finds in Homerand Herodotus. In these authors, the gods or fate tend to settle the outcome of the most significant events, but they leave leeway for the specific way in which these pivotal events come to pass. Thus, the Greeks endorsed a malleable variant of necessity, so that considerable scope for human choicepersists within the framework fixed by necessity. Pericles turns out to be Thucydides' prime example of an individual who uses the leeway left by necessity for prudent interventions into the course of events

    This book explores cases of decapitation found in sources on the reign of Alexander the Great. Despite the enormous literature on the career of Alexander the Great, this is the first study on the characterisation of violent deaths during his hectic reign. This historiographical omission has involved the tacit and blind acceptance of the details found in the ancient sources. Therefore, this book seeks to illustrate how cultural expectations, literary models, and ideological taboos shaped these accounts and argues for a close and critical reading of the sources. Given the different cultural considerations surrounding decapitation in Greek and Roman cultures, this book illustrates how those biases could have differently shaped certain episodes depending on the ultimate writer.This book, therefore, can be especially interesting for scholars focused on the career of Alexander the Great, but also valuable for other Classicists, philologists, and even for anthropologists because it represents a good case of study of cultural symbolism of violent death, semantics of power, imperial domination and the confrontation between opposite cultural appreciations of a practice
