Klappentext: "Harold Bloom is our greatest living student of literature, "a colossus among critics" (The New York Times) and a "master entertainer" (Newsweek). Over the course of a remarkable career spanning more than half a century, in such best-selling books as The Western Canon and Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, he transformed the way we look at the masterworks of western literature. Now, in the first collection devoted to his illuminating writings specifically on American literature, Bloom reflects on the surprising ways American writers have influenced each other across more than two centuries. The American Canon gathers five decades of Bloom's essays, occasional pieces, and introductions as well as excerpts from several of his books, weaving them together into an unrivalled tour of the great American bookshelf. Always a champion of aesthetic power, Bloom tells the story of our national literature in terms of artistic struggle against powerful predecessors and the American thirst for selfhood. All of the visionary American writers who have long preoccupied Bloom--Emerson and Whitman, Hawthorne and Melville, and Dickinson, Faulkner, Crane, Frost, Stevens, and Bishop--are here, along with Hemingway, James, O'Connor, Ellison, Hurston, LeGuin, Ashbery and many others. Bloom's enthusiasm for these American geniuses is contagious, and he reminds us how these writers have shaped our sense of who we are, and how they can summon us to be yet better versions of ourselves." -- Amazon

"Reflections on a lost poem and its rediscovery by contemporary poets. Gilgamesh is the most ancient long poem known to exist. It is also the newest classic in the canon of world literature. Lost for centuries to the sands of the Middle East but found again in the 1850s, it tells the story of a great king, his heroism, and his eventual defeat. It is a story of monsters, gods, and cataclysms, and of intimate friendship and love. Acclaimed literary historian Michael Schmidt provides a unique meditation on the rediscovery of Gilgamesh and its profound influence on poets today. Schmidt describes how the poem is a work in progress even now, an undertaking that has drawn on the talents and obsessions of an unlikely cast of characters, from archaeologists and museum curators to tomb raiders and jihadis. Fragments of the poem, incised on clay tablets, were scattered across a huge expanse of desert when it was recovered in the nineteenth century. The poem had to be reassembled, its languages deciphered. The discovery of a pre-Noah flood story was front-page news on both sides of the Atlantic, and the poem's allure only continues to grow as additional cuneiform tablets come to light. Its translation, interpretation, and integration are ongoing. In this illuminating book, Schmidt discusses the special fascination Gilgamesh holds for contemporary poets, arguing that part of its appeal is its captivating otherness. He reflects on the work of leading poets such as Charles Olson, Louis Zukofsky, and Yusef Komunyakaa, whose own encounters with the poem are revelatory, and he reads its many translations and editions to bring it vividly to life for readers."--Publisher's website

"A brilliant, invigorating account of the great writers on both sides of the Iron Curtain who played the dangerous games of espionage, dissidence and subversion that changed the course of the Cold War. During the Cold War, literature was both sword and noose. Novels, essays and poems could win the hearts and minds of those caught between the competing creeds of capitalism and communism. They could also lead to exile, imprisonment or execution if they offended those in power. The clandestine intelligence services of the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union had secret agents and vast propaganda networks devoted to literary warfare. But the battles were personal, too: friends turning on each other, lovers cleaved by political fissures, artists undermined by inadvertent complicities. In Cold Warriors, Harvard University's Duncan White vividly chronicles how this ferocious intellectual struggle was waged on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The book has at its heart five major writers--George Orwell, Stephen Spender, Mary McCarthy, Graham Greene and Andrei Sinyavsky--but the full cast includes a dazzling array of giants, among them Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, John le Carré, Richard Wright, Ernest Hemingway, Boris Pasternak, Gioconda Belli, Arthur Koestler, Vaclav Havel, Joan Didion, Isaac Babel, Howard Fast, Lillian Hellman, Mikhail Sholokhov --and scores more. Spanning decades and continents and spectacularly meshing gripping narrative with perceptive literary detective work, Cold Warriors is a welcome reminder that, at a moment when ignorance is celebrated and reading seen as increasingly irrelevant, writers and books can change the world."--Amazon

Katherine Mansfield's contemporaries knew her primarily as a contributor to magazines and periodicals. In 1922, for instance, Wyndham Lewis described her as 'the famous New Zealand Mag.-story writer'. This book provides the first in-depth study of Mansfield's engagement in periodical culture, examining her contributions to the political weekly The New Age, the avant-garde little magazine Rhythm and the literary journal The Athenaeum. Reading these writings against the editorial strategies and professional cultures of each periodical, Chris Mourant situates Mansfield's work within networks of production and uncovers the many ways in which she engaged with the writings of others and responded to the political, aesthetic and social contexts of early twentieth-century periodical culture. By examining Mansfield's ambivalent position as a colonial woman writer working both within and against the London literary establishment, in particular, this book provides a new perspective on Mansfield as a 'colonial-metropolitan modernist' and proto-postcolonial writer

Abdulrazak Gurnah -- Viet Thanh Nguyen -- Luis Alberto Urrea -- Comparative analysis. This book builds on existing scholarship by leading theorists to offer an in-depth examination of an intriguing selection of writers. It explores how works by Abdulrazak Gurnah, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Luis Alberto Urrea represent a recalibration of how stories about marginalised migrants in the US and the UK are told - stories about their rights, their suffering, and their relationships to the citizens around them that reject victimhood and embrace just memories. The selected works reject and counter descriptions of the marginalised that are framed in terms of victimhood and passivity. As an alternative, they emphasise the need for just memories and narratives that not only accept personal agency, but also afford their characters opportunities to exercise power and control over their own lives and destinies, no matter how limited these may be

    1. Introduction: The Sidelining of the Women of Dune -- 2. Mind-Body Synergy -- 3. Reproduction and Motherhood -- 4. Voices -- 5. Education and Memory -- 6. Sexuality -- 7. Conclusion. This book undertakes the first large-scale analysis of women’s agency in Frank Herbert’s six-book science fiction Dune series. Kara Kennedy explores how female characters in the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood—from Jessica to Darwi Odrade—secure control and influence through five avenues of embodied agency: mind-body synergy, reproduction and motherhood, voices, education and memory, and sexuality. She also discusses constraints on their agency, tensions between individual and collective action, and comparisons with other characters including the Mentats, Bene Tleilaxu, and Honored Matres. The book engages with second-wave feminist theories and historical issues to highlight how the series anticipated and paralleled developments in the women’s liberation movement. In this context, it addresses issues regarding sexual difference and solidarity, as well as women’s demand to have control over their bodies. Kennedy concludes that the series should be acknowledged as a significant contribution to the genre as part of both New Wave and feminist science fiction. Kara Kennedy is a researcher, writer, and educator in the areas of science fiction, digital literacy, and writing. She is an avid scholar of Dune who has lectured and published on various topics including world-building. She posts literary analyses of Dune for a mainstream audience on her blog DuneScholar.com.

"Through what strategies might contemporary artists confront cultural assumptions about race? In what ways can the devices that make race feel familiar-such as stereotypes or strategic essentialism-be used to make race feel unfamiliar? What new perspectives might emerge out of such disorienting confrontations? In The Racial Unfamiliar, John Brooks argues that twenty-first-century African American artists have turned to abstractionist aesthetics to complicate and illuminate how we think and see race. Brooks shows that established categories of cultural production-such as "African American art" or "Black history"-reproduce familiar but confining ideas about race, and that some audiences assume such ideas reflect a "truth" about Black identity or Black experience in the United States. Instead of countering representations of race with "authentic" portrayals of African American identity and experience, recent artists have begun exaggerating and overemphasizing them. By inflating and abstracting clichéd representations and stereotypes, these artists expose the incongruities that underlie racist attitudes and refute the idea that any single African American experience exists to be represented. Through the production of illegible misrepresentations of a multitude of black experiences, the literary and visual works considered in this book insist that blackness exceeds categorical representation. Brooks traces the disorienting effects of this experimental aesthetic through a broad array of recent artworks, from novels and plays by Percival Everett and Suzan-Lori Parks to photography by Roy DeCarava and installation art by Kara Walker, to show how contemporary African American cultural production can be understood as an operation in abstracting and upending the cultural determinants that make racial Blackness intelligible"--

In Esther Tellermann: Enigma, Prayer, Identity , the first book-length study of the writer's œuvre, Aaron Prevots highlights her innovative poetic approach to inner and outer realities. He shows how Tellermann (1947-) explores the world's innermost structures, its textures and contours, its indeterminate places that seemingly intersect, and dreams and myth as springboards for experiencing anew historical turning points and timeless rites of mourning. He considers the enigmatic quality of long suites of poetic song whose form can resemble that of prayer, as well as the stakes regarding identity when poetic expression foregrounds openness to the Other. In examining texts from 1999-2019, Aaron Prevots emphasizes this major poet's decentered lyricism and the presence of fellow writers as interlocutors

Joking Relationships -- Women and Wit -- Clowns and Wise Fools -- Black Humour -- Humour and Ethics. "Shakespeare in Jest draws fascinating parallels between Shakespeare's humour and contemporary humour. Indira Ghose argues that while many of Shakespeare's jokes no longer work for us, his humour was crucial in shaping comedy in today's entertainment industry. The book looks at a wide variety of plays and reads them in conjunction with examples from contemporary culture, from stand-up comedy to late night shows. Ghose shows the importance of jokes, which are often remarkably similar in Shakespeare's time and ours. Shakespeare's wittiest characters are mostly women, who use wit to puncture male pretensions and to acquire cultural capital. Clowns and wise fools use humour to mock their betters, while black humour trains the spotlight on the audience, exposing our collusion in the world it skewers. In a discussion of the ethics of humour, the book uncovers striking affinities between Puritan attacks on the theatre and contemporary attacks on comedy. An enjoyable and accessible read, this lively book will enlighten and entertain students, researchers, and general readers interested in Shakespeare, humour, and popular culture"--

Introduction: The Christmas series -- Incarnation, or, the elevation of the quotidian: Giorgione, Andrewes, and Kipling in the tangible world - Journey of the Magi, 1927 -- Prayer incorporated in poetry - A Song for Simeon, 1928 -- The intellect incarnate: opposing Walter Pater, supporting neo-Scholasticism - Animula, 1929 -- Emotion embodied and sensation bethought - Marina, 1930 -- An idea incarnated in an individual: German philosophy and the First Marshal of Poland - Triumphal March, 1931 -- An incarnation of religion: the return to ritual with an altered attitude - The Cultivation of Christmas Trees, 1954 -- Conclusion: Arcs converging. "What T. S. Eliot once said about Shakespeare and Dante-noting that that the supreme poet "in writing himself, writes his time"-fittingly characterises his own work, also including The Ariel Poems with which he responded, promptly and pointedly, to the problems of the times. Published with unwavering regularity, a poem a year, they were composed in this period when Eliot was mainly writing prose; and, like his prose, they reverberated with various contemporary issues ranging from the revision of the Book of Common Prayer to translations of Heidegger to the questions of leadership and populism. This study, in order to highlight the historical specificity of the poems, or, their topicality, traces the constellations of thought linking Eliot's prose and poetry. Additionally, it attempts to expose the Ariels' shared arc of meaning-the unobtrusive incarnational metaphor which determines the perspective from which they propose a specific understanding of the epoch, the underlying figure of thought which brings them together into a conceptually discrete set. It is the first study that endeavours to both universalize and historicise the series, striving to disclose the regular without suppressing the random. Approaching the series as a system of orderly disorder, the notion very much at home with chaos theory, it offers interpretations that are either fresh, or significantly reangled, and suggests new intellectual contexts"--

"English summary: In Esther Tellermann: Enigma, Prayer, Identity, the first book-length study of the writer's œuvre, Aaron Prevots highlights her innovative poetic approach to inner and outer realities. In examining texts from 1999-2019, Aaron Prevots emphasizes this major poet's decentered lyricism and the presence of fellow writers as interlocutors.

"In Moving Home, Sandra Gunning examines nineteenth-century African diasporic travel writing to expand and complicate understandings of the Black Atlantic. Gunning draws on the writing of missionaries, abolitionists, entrepreneurs, and explorers whose work challenges the assumptions that travel writing is primarily associated with leisure or scientific research. For instance, Yoruba ex-slave turned Anglican bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther played a role in the Christianization of colonial Nigeria. Sarah Forbes Bonetta, a formerly enslaved girl gifted to Queen Victoria, traveled the African colonies as the wife of a prominent colonial figure and at the protection of her benefactress. Alongside Nancy Gardiner Prince, Martin R. Delany, Robert Campbell, and others, these writers used their mobility as African diasporic and colonial subjects to explore the Atlantic world and beyond while they negotiated the complex intersections between nation and empire. Rather than categorizing them as merely precursors of Pan-Africanist traditions, Gunning traces their successes and frustrations to capture a sense of the historical and geographical specificities that shaped their careers"--

Faced with the momentous changes wrought by discovery, empire, religious schism, expanding print culture, consolidation of legal codes and social transformation, writers sought innovation within existing forms (the novella, the byzantine romance, theatrical drama) and created novel genres (most notably, the picaresque). These essays show how casuistry, with its questioning of example and precept, and meticulous concern with conscience the particularities of circumstance, is instrumental in cultivating the subjectivity, rhetorical virtuosity and spirit of inquiry that we have come to associate with the modern novel"--

Seneca's Characters addresses one of the most enduring and least theorised elements of literature: fictional character and its relationship to actual, human selfhood. Where does the boundary between character and person lie? While the characters we encounter in texts are obviously not 'real' people, they still possess person-like qualities that stimulate our attention and engagement. How is this relationship formulated in contexts of theatrical performance, where characters are set in motion by actual people, actual bodies and voices? This book addresses such questions by focusing on issues of coherence, imitation, appearance and autonomous action. It argues for the plays' sophisticated treatment of character, their acknowledgement of its purely fictional ontology alongside deep - and often dark - appreciation of its quasi-human qualities. Seneca's Characters offers a fresh perspective on the playwright's powerful tragic aesthetics that will stimulate scholars and students alike.

"The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. This is a crucial guide to the ways in which new, interdisciplinary understandings of emotion and affect-in fields from neuroscience to social theory--are changing the study of literature and of the ways those new understandings are impacted by work on literature also"--

In this collection of essays, authors propose a temporal shift in (post)-Yugoslav studies. By taking into account select examples from literature, art, and culture, the volume questions a possibility of explaining the temporal structure underlying the theoretical and analytical concepts employed in understanding (post)-Yugoslav literature(s) and culture(s). Analyses undertaken in the essays showcase that the (post)-Yugoslav literary, artistic, and cultural practices do not only attempt to portray the demise of the state and the succeeding war between its former republics. Instead, the authors underscore that the critical (post)-Yugoslav studies task is to evince and critically reflect on and engage with the processes before and after the dissolution to capture the collapse itself
