Finding it impossible to continue writing in Arabic in Israel, many Iraqi Jewish novelists faced the literary challenge of switching to Hebrew. Focusing on the literary works of the writers Shimon Ballas, Sami Michael and Eli Amir, this book examines their use of their native Iraqi Arabic in their Hebrew works. It examines the influence of Arabic language and culture and explores questions of language, place and belonging from the perspective of sociolinguistics and multilingualism.In addition Ahmed applies stylistics as a framework to investigate the range of linguistic phenomena that can be found in these exophonic texts, such as code-switching, borrowing, language and translation strategies. This new stylistic framework for analysing exophonic texts offers a future model for the study of other languages.The social and political implications of this dilemma, as it finds expression in creative writing, are also manifold. In an age of mass migration and population displacement, the conflicted loyalties explored in this book through the prism of Arabic and Hebrew are relevant in a range of linguistic contexts

    Explores the phenomenon of writing literature in the non-mother tongue Presents a new stylistic framework for analysing exophonic texts Introduces a linguistic and stylistic study of exophonic writings beyond the European context to include Semitic languagesExplores how and why Arabic was incorporated in modern Hebrew textsExamines the use of Arabic in nine Hebrew novels from the 1960s to the present Analyses the works of authors Sami Michael, Shimon Ballas and Eli Amir In the late 1950s, Iraqi Jews were either forced or chose to leave Iraq for Israel. Finding it impossible to continue writing in Arabic in Israel, many Iraqi Jewish novelists faced the literary challenge of switching to Hebrew. Focusing on the literary works of the writers Shimon Ballas, Sami Michael and Eli Amir, this book examines their use of their native Iraqi Arabic in their Hebrew works. It examines the influence of Arabic language and culture and explores questions of language, place and belonging from the perspective of sociolinguistics and multilingualism.In addition Ahmed applies stylistics as a framework to investigate the range of linguistic phenomena that can be found in these exophonic texts, such as code-switching, borrowing, language and translation strategies. This new stylistic framework for analysing exophonic texts offers a future model for the study of other languages.The social and political implications of this dilemma, as it finds expression in creative writing, are also manifold. In an age of mass migration and population displacement, the conflicted loyalties explored in this book through the prism of Arabic and Hebrew are relevant in a range of linguistic contexts

    La traduction est un phénomène central pour l'Europe telle qu'elle est en train de se construire : elle assure les échanges entre Etats sans qu'une langue commune donne l'impression d'une hégémonie quelconque ou d'un abandon des identités nationales. Cet attachement à la notion d'identité tout en ménageant les échanges culturels est une constante de l'histoire européenne et ces échanges passés, fondés sur la traduction, font que la construction de l'Europe ne se réduit pas à la création d'une entité économique et politique : elle possède une dimension humaine et culturelle spécifique, qui lui donne son âme. Ce colloque a abordé ces deux aspects du rôle de la traduction en Europe : dans le passé et aujourd'hui comme facteur de découverte mutuelle et ferment culturel ; de manière plus spécifique aujourd'hui comme facteur d'équilibre et instrument de communication au sein des institutions. Le colloque a rassemblé des spécialistes de nombreux pays européens ou observateurs jetant un regard sur l'Europe. Les textes partent de la traduction en Irlande au Moyen Age pour aboutir aux traducteurs allemands de Roumanie au XIXe siècle. La dernière partie du colloque tente de faire le point sur divers aspects de la recherche en matière de traductologie ainsi que sur la formation des traducteurs.

    Cet essai a pour ambition d'édifier une sociologie de la traduction à partir des idées de Pierre Bourdieu sur la sociologie de la culture. Est analysée la science-fiction telle qu'elle s'est implantée en France dans les années 1950 par l'action des agents Boris Vian, Raymond Queneau et Michel Pilotin. Issue du courant américain des années 1920, la science-fiction est en elle-même un phénomène de traduction, ayant émergé sous l'impulsion du Luxembourgeois Hugo Gernsback du terreau de Jules Verne et accessoirement H. G. Wells et Edgar Poe. La réception d'H. G. Wells au Mercure de France et dans la NRF (avant la première guerre mondiale) est d'abord présentée, ainsi que des tentatives sans lendemains avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ensuite, est étudiée dans le détail la grande tradition de la science-fiction qui, par la traduction, a pris racine durablement dans la France de l'après-Guerre : la traduction et ses agents, la traduction au Rayon Fantastique (Hachette-Gallimard), Boris Vian traducteur d'Alfred E. van Vogt, la traduction de l'onomastique dans la revue Galaxie. Enfin, en conclusion, l'auteur procède à un exercice de double réflexivité traductologique. L'essai se clôt sur des annexes qui fournissent des bibliographies de traducteurs (livres traduits).

    Mayotte est une petite île française située dans l'océan Indien. Malgré son insularité, elle a toujours été ouverte aux apports étrangers ; sa situation géographique - à l'entrée du canal de Mozambique - l'expose à l'arrivée de tous ceux qui empruntent cette voie maritime sans obstacles. Historiquement, elle a des liens de proximité forts avec les autres îles de l'archipel des Comores et la grande île de Madagascar, ce qui explique la présence, sur son territoire, de deux langues locales, l'une d'origine bantoue, le shimaore, l'autre d'origine malgache, le kibushi. Celles-ci cohabitent avec la langue officielle et de la scolarisation : le français. Française depuis 1841, cette île est aujourd'hui exposée à une démographie galopante, une immigration massive et une mondialisation grandissante. Devenue le 101e département français depuis le 31 mars 2011, en pleine mutation socioculturelle, Mayotte doit faire face à tous ces obstacles. Les articles réunis dans cet ouvrage ne portent pas exclusivement sur Mayotte ; ils rendent compte aussi d'expériences et de travaux qui ont été menés dans d'autres pays ou dans des régions dont les situations linguistiques ressemblent à celle de Mayotte.     Cet ouvrage est l'occasion de présenter des pratiques d'écriture en langue régionale à partir de l'édition d'un choix de textes produits depuis près de vingt ans en Aquitaine. Mi-individuelle, mi-collective, l'écriture en langue minoritaire, ici l'occitan médoquin, a trouvé, à travers le cadre souple du groupe des Tradinaires de Vendays, les "maîtres des eaux souterraines", un lieu d'expression. Le texte est prétexte à la redécouverte de la langue enfouie, dans un va-et-vient entre la spontanéité vernaculaire et la construction de la langue littéraire. Mouvement classique s'il n'avait choisi de se situer dans une dialectique du local et du standard et si le réapprentissage de l'occitan n'y était lié à la découverte de l'écriture et de la création.

    Cet ouvrage étudie les conditions d'émergence historiques et discursives du « droit de traduction » et du droit qui l'administre : le droit d'auteur. Privilégiant une approche essentiellement archéologique, le livre montre comment la conception classique de la traduction a joué un rôle sensible dans la formation du discours juridique qui a contribué à l'avènement de l'auteur et de son droit tels que conçus aujourd'hui. Soucieux d'une meilleure diffusion du patrimoine culturel mondial, l'ouvrage propose une nouvelle politique du droit de traduire qui n'interroge pas seulement le droit d'auteur comme catalyseur de la marchandisation de la production intellectuelle, mais également le droit international comme instrument de l'impérialisme culturel de la globalisation. L'étude démontre comment le « droit de traduction », conçu désormais non plus dans le champ juridique traditionnel, mais plutôt dans celui d'une résistance politique, devient alors un « droit à la traduction ». Dire le droit de traduire et sa liberté, c'est remettre l'éthique du rapport à l'altérité au coeur de nos préoccupations. Traduire librement, pour les plus défavorisés, c'est la possibilité de se nourrir de la connaissance et de la culture des autres tout en préservant leur identité, leur indépendance et leur ouverture sur le monde.

    A l'occasion du départ à la retraite de Michel Ballard, ses amis et collègues ont tenu à lui offrir ce volume d'hommages, en signe de reconnaissance et de gratitude envers un enseignant-chercheur qui a largement contribué au développement de la recherche en traductologie. La place qu'il occupe dans ce domaine se mesure d'ailleurs à l'aune des nombreux participants à ce volume, issus de huit pays différents. La traductologie dans tous ses états : ce titre à dessein polysémique reflète le double fondement de ce recueil, qui donne la parole à des auteurs explorant la traductologie sous divers aspects mais qui témoigne aussi de l'émoi suscité par cette fin officielle d'activités. Cet ouvrage offre des regards croisés et complémentaires sur divers aspects théoriques et pratiques de la traduction et de la traductologie et évoque quelques-uns des champs de recherche qui furent et demeurent ceux de Michel Ballard.

    Au croisement de plusieurs langues et idiomes, de plusieurs domaines de recherche et techniques d'analyse textuelle - littérature et traductologie d'une part, stylistique, psychanalyse et génétique d'autre part -, cette étude cherche à retracer les procédés de réécriture mis en œuvre par Samuel Beckett lorsque ce dernier s'auto-traduit. Le corpus, qui comprend la plupart des textes dits « courts » de Beckett, nouvelles et pièces, couvre les années 1946-1980. L'étude s'appuie essentiellement sur une lecture comparée des versions jumelles qui révèle la topographie modifiée du texte auto-traduit, lequel constitue un des seuils de l'œuvre. Elle prend aussi largement en compte les avant textes bilingues, objet d'une attention particulière en annexe. La traduction se révèle être un art de l'empêchement voué à l'inachèvement, l'auto-traduction un travail de (mal)-citation de soi prolongeant le travail intra et intertextuel inscrit dans une œuvre qui ne cesse de se citer d'un texte à l'autre. Chaque texte est ainsi vu en concurrence avec son double, qui offre une vision décentrée du Moi et de son rapport avec le monde.
