    Zeitliche und regionale Entwicklungen ebenso wie offensichtliche Präferenzen von antiken Verfassern und Auftraggebern prägen die enorme Vielfalt der Carmina Latina Epigraphica. In der römischen Republik und Kaiserzeit dominieren Grabinschriften in Versmaß, seit der Spätantike werden offensichtlich auch andere Textgruppen zunehmend attraktiver. In Republik und Spätantike waren solche eingeschriebenen Gedichte mit oder ohne Prosa-Rahmung eher ein Elitenphänomen, wohingegen die Epigramme in der Kaiserzeit eine populäre Textgruppe für breite Bevölkerungsschichten waren. Im Band werden verschiedene Aspekte von Text-Entwicklungen durch die Jahrhunderte ebenso untersucht wie regionale Veränderungen und Wechselwirkungen von Texten und ihren Objektträgern. Oft genug lassen sich aber einzelne dieser Gedichte der Einordnung in vermeintlich regionale und zeitlich vorherrschende 'epigraphic habits' nicht einordnen. Auch für solch singuläre, sehr individuell gestaltete Inschriften werden mögliche Kontextualisierung aufgezeigt, vor allem durch Verbindungen zu anderen Textgattungen und Traditionen. Mit diesem Band wird daher das die Editionen und Analysen zumeist dominierende regionale Prinzip für die Carmina Latina Epigraphica auf die Probe gestellt

    "Explores Herodotus' Histories in dialogue with contemporary philosophical debates. Combining close readings, reader reception, and genre studies, it expands our understanding of Herodotus' context and restores the Histories' place in Presocratic thought. In addition, the book elucidates philosophy's subsequent engagement with Herodotus' Histories"-- Herodotus' Histories was composed well before the genre of Greek historiography emerged as a distinct narrative enterprise. This book explores it within its fifth-century context alongside the extant fragments of Presocratic treatises as well as philosophizing tragedy and comedy. It argues for the Histories' competitive engagement with contemporary intellectual culture and demonstrates its ambition as an experimental prose work, tracing its responses to key debates on relativism, human nature, and epistemology. In addition to expanding the intellectual milieu of which the Histories is a part and restoring its place in Presocratic thought, K. Scarlett Kingsley elucidates fourth-century philosophy's subsequent engagement with the work. In doing so, she contributes to a revision of the sharp separation between the ancient genres of philosophy and history.     "Aristophanes' comic masterpiece Thesmophoriazusae has long been recognized amongst the plays of Old Comedy for its deconstruction of tragic theatricality. This book reveals that this deconstruction is grounded not simply in Aristophanes' wider engagement with tragic realism. Rather, it demonstrates that from its outset Aristophanes' play draws upon Parmenides' philosophical revelations concerning reality and illusion, employing Eleatic strictures and imagery to philosophize the theatrical situation, criticize Aristophanes' poetic rival Euripides as promulgator of harmful deceptions, expose the dangerous complicity of Athenian theatre audiences in tragic illusion, and articulate political advice to an audience negotiating a period of political turmoil characterized by deception and uncertainty (the months before the oligarchic coup of 411 BC). Since this discourse has a remarkably wide reach, the book is broad in scope, ranging from archaic Greek poetry through Roman oratory and 'Longinus' to the reception of critical imagery in Proust and Derrida"-- "This is a book about metaphors of place and spaces of metaphor in ancient literary theory and criticism. It traces the power of figuration to shape, in Shakespeare's famous phrase, "a local habitation and a name" and demonstrates the ways in which rural landscapes emerge in ancient convention as central to literary judgment and theorizing.
