Language policy is an issue of critical importance in the world today. In this introduction, Bernard Spolsky explores many debates at the forefront of language policy: ideas of correctness and bad language; bilingualism and multilingualism; language death and efforts to preserve endangered languages; language choice as a human and civil right; and language education policy. Through looking at the language practices, beliefs and management of social groups from families to supra-national organizations, he develops a theory of modern national language policy and the major forces controlling it, such as the demands for efficient communication, the pressure for national identity, the attractions of (and resistance to) English as a global language, and the growing concern for human and civil rights as they impinge on language. Two central questions asked in this wide-ranging survey are of how to recognize language policies, and whether or not language can be managed at all Language practices, ideology and beliefs, and management and planning -- Driving out the bad -- Pursuing the good and dealing with the new -- The nature of language policy and its domains -- Two monolingual polities -- Iceland and France -- How English spread -- Does the US have a language policy or just civil rights? -- Language rights -- Monolingual polities under pressure -- Monolingual polities with recognized linguistic minorities -- Partitioning language space -- two, three, many -- Resisting language shift.

Introduction -- An emerging multilingual repertoire -- Societal multulingualism -- Acquiring an maintaining a bilingual repertoire -- Crossing the boundaries : codeswitching in conversation -- The replication of linguistic "matter" -- Lexical borrowing -- Grammatical and phonological borrowing -- Converging structures : pattern replication -- Contact languages -- Outlook. Most societies in today's world are multilingual. 'Language contact' occurs when speakers of different languages interact and their languages influence each other. This book is an introduction to the subject, covering individual and societal multilingualism, the acquisition of two or more languages from birth, second language acquisition in adulthood, language change, linguistic typology, language processing and the structure of the language faculty. It explains the effects of multilingualism on society and language policy, as well as the consequences that long-term bilingualism within communities can have for the structure of languages. Drawing on the author's own first-hand observations of child and adult bilingualism, the book provides a clear analysis of such phenomena as language convergence, grammatical borrowing, and mixed languages

This book explores the dynamics of language and social change in central Europe in the context of the end of the Cold War and eastern expansion of the European Union. One outcome of the profound social transformations in central Europe since the Second World War has been the reshaping of the relationship between particular languages and linguistic varieties, especially between 'national' languages and regional or ethnic minority languages. Previous studies have investigated these transformed relationships from the macro perspective of language policies, while others have taken more fine-graine

This book studies discourses and linguistic choices in both ex-colonized and ex-colonizer communities as each copes with the outcomes of colonialism. The construction of identities, the translation of religious texts, the discursive construction of nations, the use of indigenized varieties of colonial languages, and the emergence of diaspora communities are salient topics in postcolonial linguistics, and are treated here with great expertise by the authors. The book complements and expands upon traditional descriptions of multilingualism
