    Leah R. Clark examines collecting practices across the Italian Renaissance court, exploring the circulation, exchange, collection, and display of objects. Rather than focusing on patronage strategies or the political power of individual collectors, she uses the objects themselves to elucidate the dynamic relationships formed through their exchange. Her study brings forward the mechanisms that structured relations within the court, and most importantly, also with individuals, representations, and spaces outside the court. The volume examines the courts of Italy through the wide variety of objects - statues, paintings, jewellery, furniture, and heraldry - that were valued for their subject matter, material forms, histories, and social functions. As Clark shows, the late fifteenth-century Italian court an be located not only in the body of the prince, but also in the objects that constituted symbolic practices, initiated political dialogues, caused rifts, created memories, and formed associations

    Der Pelz des Hermelins ist im Sommer braun und im Winter weiß. Das ist ein schönes Phänomen für sich, zumal das Weiß von einer Reinheit ist, die sich im Tierreich selten findet. Die Reinheit ihres weißen Fells wurde vielen Hermelinen zum Verhängnis: Sie endeten als Stück in einem adligen Mantel, ihr Weiß noch unterstrichen durch die schwarze Schwanzspitze, die mitverarbeitet wurde. Das reine Weiß des Winterpelzes machte das Hermelin auch zu einer brauchbaren Projektionsfläche des Volksglaubens. Als Symbol der Keuschheit und Reinheit erscheint es schon im antiken Aberglauben: Um sein Fell nicht zu beflecken, empfange das Hermelin durchs Ohr und gebäre durch den Mund - oder umgekehrt, wie der 'Physiologus' behauptete. Auch galt es als ein besonders kultiviertes Tier, weil es sich eher von einem Jäger fangen lasse, als durch den Kot zu gehen, sein reines Weiß also höher schätze als Freiheit und Leben. Sein Fellwechsel machte das Tier darüber hinaus zu einem beliebten Objekt für Zauber und Gegenzauber, Wetterorakel und Verwandlungssagen.
