Die basalen Deutungsmuster der Wirklichkeit weisen zudem Raumbezüge auf, die im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung von Unternehmensübernahmen (Mergers & Acquisitions, M&A) stehen. Denn auch unternehmerisches Handeln, das oftmals als »Black Box« erscheint, unterliegt gesellschaftlicher Prägung.

    Welchen Stellenwert kann 'Wildnis' in einer modernen Gesellschaft einnehmen? Die kontroversen Debatten, die aktuell in Mitteleuropa geführt werden, zeigen die Virulenz dieser Frage. Eine besondere Rolle spielt dabei die Akzeptanz der administrativen Ausweisung von Wildnisgebieten durch die Bevölkerung. Gisela Kangler liefert einen neuen Ansatz, um bestehende Missverständnisse und Konflikte in Bezug auf die Naturschutzidee 'Wildnis' einordnen und verstehen zu können. Analysiert werden drei grundlegend unterschiedliche Auffassungen: 'unbekannte Wildnis', 'bestimmte Wildnis' und 'Ökosystem-Wildnis'. Dabei ermöglicht es die wiederentdeckte progressive Kulturphilosophie Ernst Cassirers, die gesellschaftliche Pluralität in ihrer Mannigfaltigkeit in den Blick zu nehmen.

    In Zeiten sinkender Auflagen erfreuen sich Zeitschriften, die sich mit dem ländlichen Leben beschäftigen, großer Beliebtheit - allen voran die Zeitschrift »Landlust«.Ausgehend von neueren Überlegungen der Sozial- und Kulturgeographie geht Christoph Baumann dieser Lust am Ländlichen nach. Unter Zusammenführung einer historischen Auseinandersetzung, einer medienanalytischen Detailstudie sowie einer gesellschaftsdiagnostischen Interpretation der idyllischen Ländlichkeit zeigt seine Studie, inwiefern sich eine positive Bezugnahme auf das Ländliche historisch herausgebildet hat und welche Rolle sie in unserer urbanen Gegenwartsgesellschaft einnimmt. In times of decreasing sales numbers, journals and magazines that focus on living in the country enjoy increasing popularity - particularly the German magazine Landlust. Based on recent observations of social and cultural geography, Christoph Baumann has researched this love of country life. By combining a historical analysis, a media-analytical in-depth study and a diagnostic interpretation of society, his study shows to what extent a positive reference to country life has evolved historically and what part it has in our current society, in which more and more people live in cities.

    For the first time worldwide, this collection brings together analyses of the last two centuries of historical change around the shores and drainage basin of Lake Ladoga, Europe’s largest lake. The main focus of the narrative is the Northern Ladoga region, which was a Finnish administrative area between 1812 and 1944. After the Second World War, the entire shoreline of Lake Ladoga was incorporated into the northeast part of Russia’s border region, the Autonomous Republic of Karelia and the Leningrad Province. The main theme uniting this collection is how the relationship between humans and nature is shaped by industrialization and modernization in society. Other key issues include protecting nature and perspectives on particular places and times, which are reflected in the methodological and thematic choices made in this volume. The research framework set by the editor, Professor Maria Lähteenmäki, is the new lakefront history (Finn. uusi rantahistoria), focusing on approaches to environmental, economic and sensory history of lakes. To draw broad conclusions, on the one hand, the multilevel changes on the lakefront cannot be understood without knowledge of the history of the wider drainage basin, and awareness of the geopolitics of the region and the climate changes. On the other hand, the human relationship to natural waters has changed significantly in 200 years. Thinking in terms of economic benefit has gradually given way to principles of sustainable development. Lake Ladoga is also being redefined from a spatial perspective, as nationalist ownership of the region is coupled with global concern about the state of Europe’s largest lake.

    This volume investigates the process of learning how to live with individual and group differences in the twenty-first century and examines the ambivalences of contemporary cosmopolitanism. Engaging with the concept of ‘critical cartography’, it emphasizes the structural impact of localities on the experiences of those living with difference, while trying to develop an account of the counter-mappings that follow spatial and social transformations in today’s world. The contributors focus on visual, normative and cultural embodiments of difference, examining dynamic conflicts at local sites that are connected by the processes of Europeanization and globalization.
    The collection explores a wide range of topics, including conflicting claims of sexual minorities and conservative Christians, the relationship between national identity and cosmopolitanism, and the ways that cross-cultural communication and bilingualism can help us to understand the complex nature of belonging.     The man of blue landscapes describes the life and work of the Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö (1882–1956), whose career also reflected Finland’s development as a modern state. Granö was a scientific explorer, writer, a pioneer of Finnish photographic art and a professor of geography at the universities of Tartu (Estonia), Helsinki and Turku. In Estonia he applied scientific method to the study of local history and from Tartu brought the tradition of urban research. Granö spent much of his youth in Omsk in western Siberia, where his father worked as a priest among displaced and deported Finns and Estonians. From 1906 to 1916 Granö made an expedition to Mongolia and the Altai mountains, but his fieldwork remained unfinished when the 1917 revolution broke out, the area was then closed to Western scholars for 70 years. Among Granö’s most important works are the classic travel book Altai, vaellusvuosina nähtyä ja elettyä (‘The Altai, seen and experienced during my years of travel’, 1921) and his methodological masterpiece Puhdas maantiede (‘Pure geography’, 1930). In it Granö outlined a theory of landscapes, and the book was a pioneering work ahead of its time: landscape was examined in terms of the relation between human beings and their environment, as the sum of all the senses.

    The topic of clustering is a central one in contemporary debates on the relationship between the global and the local. This book addresses both conceptual and empirical issues on clustering, learning and regional development. It represents the current state of affairs in this body of literature in a critical way and gives a unique overview of the latest developments. The book reflects a kind of uneasiness scholars have with the general model of clusters that has been so dominant in the field of regional economics and economic geography in the past twenty years. All chapters in this book contribute to the debate, either at the conceptual level, the empirical level or both. At the conceptual level, the cluster model has been criticized because it has been represented as a model that has been idealized too much. Moreover, it has been developed mainly as a theoretical model, without having been accompanied by a great deal of empirical testing of its main propositions.

This book traces the history of human movement and interaction around and across the world's greatest bodies of water, charting our relationship with the oceans from the time of the first voyagers. David Abulafia begins with the earliest of seafaring societies - the Polynesians of the Pacific, the possessors of intuitive navigational skills long before the invention of the compass, who by the first century were trading between their far-flung islands. By the seventh century, trading routes stretched from the coasts of Arabia and Africa to southern China and Japan, bringing together the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific and linking half the world through the international spice trade. In the Atlantic, centuries before the little kingdom of Portugal carved out its powerful, seaborne empire, many peoples sought new lands across the sea - the Bretons, the Frisians and, most notably, the Vikings, now known to be the first Europeans to reach North America. As Portuguese supremacy dwindled in the late sixteenth century, the Spanish, the Dutch and then the British each successively ruled the waves.Following merchants, explorers, pirates, cartographers and travellers in their quests for spices, gold, ivory, slaves, lands for settlement and knowledge of what lay beyond, Abulafia has created an extraordinary narrative of humanity and the oceans. From the earliest forays of peoples in hand-hewn canoes through uncharted waters to the routes now taken daily by supertankers in their thousands, The Boundless Sea shows how maritime networks came to form a continuum of interaction and interconnection across the globe: 90 per cent of global trade is still conducted by sea.     "In 2001 the Chinese government announced that the precise location of Shangrila--a place that previously had existed only in fiction--had been identified in Zhongdian County, Yunnan. Since then, Sino-Tibetan borderlands in Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, and the Tibet Autonomous Region have been the sites of numerous state projects of tourism development and nature conservation, which have in turn attracted throngs of backpackers, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs who seek to experience, protect, and profit from the region's landscapes. Mapping Shangrila advances a view of landscapes as media of governance, representation, and resistance, examining how they are reshaping cultural economies, political ecologies of resource use, subjectivities, and interethnic relations. Chapters illuminate topics such as the role of Han and Tibetan literary representations of border landscapes in the formation of ethnic identities; the remaking of Chinese national geographic imaginaries through tourism in the Yading Nature Reserve; the role of The Nature Conservancy and other transnational environmental organizations in struggles over culture and environmental governance; the way in which matsutake mushroom and caterpillar fungus commodity chains are reshaping montane landscapes; and contestations over the changing roles of mountain deities and their mediums as both interact with increasingly intensive nature conservation and state-sponsored capitalism. Emily T.     Digital tools potentially enable remote collaboration. Analyzing how some 191 thousand software developers in the United States collaborate on the largest online opensource code repository platform, I find 79.8% of users clustering in only ten economic areas. Conditional on economic-area characteristics, colocated users collaborate about nine times as much as non-colocated users. Apart from this colocation effect, distance is not significantly related to collaboration among software developers. Comparison to social networks shows the colocation effect is weaker for software developers and relative connectedness probability remains at a much higher (stable) level with increasing distance. Software developer and social networks show no significant regional overlap.
