    Fifteen fragmentary Greek inscriptions have been found at different periods of time in the area of the monastery of the Franciscan Order on Mount Tabor. Inscription No. 1 is of a pagan nature and attributed to the Hellenistic period; while most of the others, dated to the early Byzantine period, are of a typical Christian character. The latter are engraved on (now broken) marble chancel screens and slabs, and one on a rectangular block tombstone of rough limestone. Together they attest to the religious/cultural transformations that Mount Tabor had undergone over the generations.

    This article argues that Kant’s famous theory of "radical evil", according to which there is a natural propensity for evil as well as good in all human beings, has precedent in the medieval Franciscan intellectual tradition. In the early thirteenth century, members of this tradition, inspired by its founder Alexander of Hales, developed a novel account of free will, according to which the will is capable of choosing between equally legitimate options of good and evil. In affirming this, early Franciscans departed from the longstanding tradition of Augustine, for whom free will can only choose the good, since evil is merely a privation of the good that limits human freedom. By the same token, they anticipated the Kantian contention that freedom entails the ability to choose between good and evil maxims. Dieser Artikel argumentiert, dass Kants berühmte Theorie vom "radikalen Bösen", gemäß der es eine natürliche Anlage zum Bösen und zum Guten in allen Menschen gibt, Vorläufer in der mittelalterlichen franziskanischen intellektuellen Tradition hat. Im frühen 13. Jahrhundert entwickelten Mitglieder dieser Tradition, inspiriert von ihrem Gründer Alexander von Hales, eine neue Vorstellung vom freien Willen, gemäß der der Wille in der Lage ist, zwischen gleichermaßen legitimen Optionen des Guten und des Bösen zu wählen.     Hieronymus Bosch’s painting known as The Ship of Fools (c. 1490–1500) has long provoked questions regarding the meaning behind its absurd tableau of singers. For more than a century, critics have taken Bosch’s representation of Franciscans as a sign of his anticlericalism. This article reevaluates Bosch’s possible motivations, taking into consideration the literary and visual cult of folly, the agency of women song collectors, Franciscan songs and preaching method, and the practice of contrafaction in devotional lyric. Appraising the evidence using an interdisciplinary method reveals a program of symbolic inversion at work in Bosch’s painting that implicates the renowned Franciscan preachers Olivier Maillard and Jan Brugman, their religious contrafacta, and those who sang them. Depicting music as folly, I argue that Bosch may have wished to represent inversely the virtues of Franciscan preaching. What better way to portray a penitential song sung to the tune of a well-known love song than by depicting a friar and a nun singing a lute song while surrounded by symbols of lust? Consequently, one might consider these as jongleurs of God, doing something recognizable and following a tradition that goes back to the founders of the order: preaching penance by converting the folly of secular love songs into tools of piety.
