    The book re-examines the religious thought and receptions of the Syrian poet Abū l-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d.1057) and one of his best known works - Luzūm mā lā yalzam (The Self-Imposed Unnecessity), a collection of poems, which, although widely studied, needs a thorough re-evaluation regarding matters of (un)belief. Given the contradictory nature of al-Maʿarrī’s oeuvre and Luzūm in particular, there have been two major trends in assessing al-Maʿarrī’s religious thought in modern scholarship. One presented al-Maʿarrī as an unbeliever and a freethinker arguing that through contradictions, he practiced taqīya, i.e., dissimulation in order to avoid persecution. The other, often apologetically, presented al-Maʿarrī as a sincere Muslim. This study proposes that the notion of ambivalence is a more appropriate analytical tool to apply to the reading of Luzūm, specifically in matters of belief. This ambivalence is directly conditioned by the historical and intellectual circumstances al-Maʿarrī lived in and he intentionally left it unsolved and intense as a robust stance against claims of certainty. Going beyond reductive interpretations, the notion of ambivalence allows for an integrative paradigm in dealing with contradictions and dissonance

Ein halbes Jahrhundert später gibt dies Anlass zur Reflexion über Entwicklungen von neuen Fragestellungen und neuen Methoden, auch im digitalen Bereich. Mit Metaphern aus der Optik als rotem Faden - wie Zerrspiegeln, Streiflichtern, Seitenblicken und blinden Flecken - blickt Claudia Rapp auf die jüngsten Entwicklungen der Forschungslandschaft zurück und wagt eine Bestandsaufnahme. Was steht im Mittelpunkt des Forscherinteresses und was wird auf diese Weise nicht oder nur sehr selektiv wahrgenommen? Wie hat die Byzantinistik von neuen Forschungsimpulsen in anderen Fachdisziplinen profitiert? Welche Erkenntnisse sind nur dann möglich, wenn das Augenmerk auf nicht-byzantinische Quellen gelenkt wird? In politischer Hinsicht sind Flüsse oftmals umkämpfte Grenzen oder Orte kriegerischer Auseinandersetzungen und können zur Projektionsfläche für nationale Diskurse werden. Gleichzeitig bilden sie aber auch Räume des Kontakts, in denen kulturelle Transfer- und Austauschprozesse stattfinden; als solche tragen sie entscheidend zur Herausbildung von Raumkulturen bzw. zur Entstehung von Kulturräumen bei. Die Vielfalt der Flusslandschaften zu umreißen und zugleich den Begriff zu konturieren, ist ein Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes

    As a representative of the intellectual elites of his time, Sebastian Brant (1457–1521) was active in various cultural fields (Latin and German poetry, pious literature and theology, law, book illustration). The contributions in this conference volume, which marks the 500th anniversary of Brant’s death, documents his influence and reach, which have extended far beyond their time, in those fields Sebastian Brant, Basler Jurist und (ab 1501) Syndikus, Diplomat und Kanzler der Freien Reichsstadt Straßburg, gehört zu den einflussreichen Akteuren seiner Zeit. Gewirkt hat er als Jurist und Hrsg. zentraler Rechtstexte, als Bearbeiter von Werken der Patristik, Mitarbeiter an einer sechsbändigen Vulgata-Ausgabe, der ersten europäischen Petrarca-Edition, als engagierter Verteidiger des Dogmas der Unbefleckten Empfängnis Mariens, als Dichter in lateinischer und deutscher Sprache, als Concepteur umfangreicher Holzschnittserien, als Verfasser tagesaktueller Gelegenheitsdichtungen, schließlich auch des „Narrenschiffs“, das europaweite Verbreitung bis ins 18. Jh. gefunden hat. Eine anlässlich von Brants 500. Todestag veranstaltete Tagung zielte darauf, die Tätigkeitsfelder, den intellektuellen Horizont und das Weiterwirken Brants in exemplarischen Untersuchungen zur würdigen. Aus den Perspektiven des Kanonischen und Römischen Rechts, der Kunstgeschichte und Musikwissenschaft, der Germanistik wie auch der Latinistik sowie der material- und quellenbezogenen Geschichtswissenschaft sind Werk und Wirken Brants untersucht worden von Wissenschaftler*innen aus Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz

    Lange Zeit hat man Reiseberichte vor allem mit Blick auf Alteritätserfahrungen gelesen. Lohnend ist aber auch der Fokus auf implizite Zukunftsvorstellungen, mit dem der Autor den Reisebericht des Hieronymus Münzer über seine Westeuropareise 1494/95 betrachtet: Aus diesem kulturgeschichtlich einzigartigen Itinerarium lassen sich die Perspektiven einer Zeitenwende vielfältig erschließen. So wird die Frage, inwieweit Reiseberichte vorhandene Wissensbestände erweiterten, hier auch mit Blick auf praktisches Handlungswissen gestellt. Der Autor interessiert sich außerdem für die Verknüpfungen: Wissenschaftliche und bildungsbestimmte Anliegen, kaufmännische, diplomatische, religiöse und repräsentative Aspekte zeigen, wie vielfältig die Motivationen des Arztes und Humanisten Münzer schon beim Aufbruch gewesen sein mögen.     Although it is fashionable among modernists to claim that globalism emerged only since ca. 1800, the opposite can well be documented through careful comparative and transdisciplinary studies, as this volume demonstrates, offering a wide range of innovative perspectives on often neglected literary, philosophical, historical, or medical documents. Texts, images, ideas, knowledge, and objects migrated throughout the world already in the pre-modern world, even if the quantitative level compared to the modern world might have been different. In fact, by means of translations and trade, for instance, global connections were established and maintained over the centuries. Archetypal motifs developed in many literatures indicate how much pre-modern people actually shared. But we also discover hard-core facts of global economic exchange, import of exotic medicine, and, on another level, intensive intellectual debates on religious issues. Literary evidence serves best to expose the extent to which contacts with people in foreign countries were imaginable, often desirable, and at times feared, of course. The pre-modern world was much more on the move and reached out to distant lands out of curiosity, economic interests, and political and military concerns. Diplomats crisscrossed the continents, and artists, poets, and craftsmen traveled widely. We can identify, for instance, both the Vikings and the Arabs as global players long before the rise of modern globalism, so this volume promises to rewrite many of our traditional notions about pre-modern worldviews, economic conditions, and the literary sharing on a global level, as perhaps best expressed by the genre of the fable

    This book brings together several strands of medieval and medievalist work in the history of emotions, with a focus on literary, historical and cinema studies. It asks how we may best 'face up' to work that has been done already in these fields, and speculates about work that might yet be done, especially by medievalists working across medieval and postmedieval sources. In the idiom 'facing up,' its editors evoke the impulse to assess and realize the place of medieval studies in the burgeoning field of emotions research. Conceptually, psychologically, and artistically, the face is perceived as being at the forefront of many human interactions and emotional practices - as such, the face is not only a powerful conceptual site for theorizing human relationships, past and present, or a site for the representation of emotion: it is itself a catalyst for feeling. As such, the contributions gathered here provide a cutting-edge reflection on the history of medieval emotions

    The premise that Western culture has undergone a ‘pictorial turn’ (W.J.T. Mitchell) has prompted renewed interest in theorizing the visual image. In recent decades researchers in the humanities and social sciences have documented the function and status of the image relative to other media, and have traced the history of its power and the attempts to disempower it. What is an Image in Medieval and Early Modern England? engages in this debate in two interrelated ways: by focusing on the (visual) image during a period that witnessed the Reformation and the invention of the printing press, and by exploring its status in relation to an array of texts including Arthurian romance, saints’ lives, stage plays, printed sermons, biblical epic, pamphlets, and psalms. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by leading authorities as well as younger scholars from the fields of English literature, art history, and Reformation history. As with all previous collections of essays produced under the auspices of the Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies, it seeks to foster dialogue between the two periods.

    Although it is fashionable among modernists to claim that globalism emerged only since ca. 1800, the opposite can well be documented through careful comparative and transdisciplinary studies, as this volume demonstrates, offering a wide range of innovative perspectives on often neglected literary, philosophical, historical, or medical documents. Texts, images, ideas, knowledge, and objects migrated throughout the world already in the pre-modern world, even if the quantitative level compared to the modern world might have been different. In fact, by means of translations and trade, for instance, global connections were established and maintained over the centuries. Archetypal motifs developed in many literatures indicate how much pre-modern people actually shared. But we also discover hard-core facts of global economic exchange, import of exotic medicine, and, on another level, intensive intellectual debates on religious issues. Literary evidence serves best to expose the extent to which contacts with people in foreign countries were imaginable, often desirable, and at times feared, of course. The pre-modern world was much more on the move and reached out to distant lands out of curiosity, economic interests, and political and military concerns. Diplomats crisscrossed the continents, and artists, poets, and craftsmen traveled widely. We can identify, for instance, both the Vikings and the Arabs as global players long before the rise of modern globalism, so this volume promises to rewrite many of our traditional notions about pre-modern worldviews, economic conditions, and the literary sharing on a global level, as perhaps best expressed by the genre of the fable

Focusing on storytelling across centuries, she explores how environmental experiences were incorporated into pre-modern cultural spaces"-- Fishermen, monks, saints, and dragons met in medieval riverscapes; their interactions reveal a rich and complex world. Using religious narrative sources to evaluate the environmental mentalities of medieval communities, Ellen F. Arnold explores the cultural meanings applied to rivers over a broad span of time, ca. 300-1100 CE. Hagiographical material, poetry, charters, chronicles, and historiographical works are explored to examine the medieval environmental imaginations about rivers, and how storytelling and memory are connected to lived experiences in riverscapes. She argues that rivers provided unique opportunities for medieval communities to understand and respond to ecological and socio-cultural transformations, and to connect their ideas about the shared religious past to hopes about the future

    Deanne Williams offers the very first study of the medieval and early modern girl actor. Whereas previous histories of the actress begin with the Restoration, this book demonstrates that the girl is actually a well-documented category of performer and a key participant in the drama of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It explores evidence of the girl actor in archival records of payment, eyewitness accounts, stage directions, paintings, and in the plays and masques that were explicitly composed for girls, and, in some cases, by them.Contradicting previous scholarly assumptions about the early modern stage as male-dominated, this evidence reveals girls participation in medieval religious drama, Tudor civic pageants and royal entries, Elizabethan country house entertainments, and Stuart court and household masques. This book situates its historical study of the girl actor within the wider contexts of 'girl culture', including girls as singers, translators and authors. By examining the impact of the girl actor on constructions of girlhood in the work of Shakespeare - whose girl characters register and evoke the power of the performing girl - Girl Culture in the Middle Ages and Renaissance argues that girls dramatic, musical and literary performances actively shaped medieval and early modern culture. It shows how the active presence and participation of girls shaped medieval and Renaissance culture, and it reveals how some of its best-known literary and dramatic texts address, represent, and reflect upon girl children, not as an imagined ideal, but as a lived reality

    This book addresses a little-considered aspect of the study of the history of emotions in medieval literature: the depiction of perplexing emotional reactions. Medieval literature often confronts audiences with displays of emotion that are improbable, physiologically impossible, or simply unfathomable in modern social contexts. The intent of such episodes is not always clear; medieval texts rarely explain emotional responses or their motivations. The implication is that the meanings communicated by such emotional display were so obvious to their intended audience that no explanation was required. This raises the question of whether such meanings can be recovered. This is the task to which the contributors to this book have put themselves. In approaching this question, this book does not set out to be a collection of literary studies that treat portrayals of emotion as simple tropes or motifs, isolated within their corpora. Rather, it seeks to uncover how such manifestations of feeling may reflect cultural and social dynamics underlying vernacular literatures from across the medieval North Sea world

    Micro Middle Ages brings together five microhistorical case studies focusing on small or seemingly inconsequential evidence that leads to broader conclusions about medieval history and the way we do and understand history in general. Paul Dutton provides an overview of microhistorical approaches and theorizes about its use in pre-modern history. As opposed to studying history "from above" or history "from below," Dutton shows the advantages for historians of doing history "from the inside out," starting from some single, overlooked, but potentially knowable thing, delving deep inside, and then reattaching it to its time and place. Such an approach has one abiding advantage: its insistence on being grounded in the particularity of the evidence. The book highlights what the microhistorical is, its conceptual and practical challenges. Dutton argues that the attention to the micro has always been with us and is a constitutive, cognitive part of who we are as human beings
