    The Chronicle of John of Nikiu is an extremely important historical source for the history of Egypt, as well as for the history of Late Antiquity in general. Being written either in Coptic of in Greek, the text was translated into Arabic at an undetermined date. Later it was translated into Ethiopic in 1601, and at the very end of the nineteenth century into Amharic. According to the current state of knowledge only these two versions have survived. The Chronicle was completely published and translated for the first time by H. Zotenberg in 1883. Since that time the number of available witnesses to the text increased, and the preparation of a new edition became an obvious disederatum. The present dissertation is devoted to the preparation of a new text-critical edition of the Chronicle applying the so-called genealogical-reconstructive method. The dissertation contains a summary of the history of research, analysis of the history of the text transmission, including the provenance of the Amharic version. In the frame of this project a new dossier of the text was prepared, which incorporated all available direct and indirect witnesses. In the course of the work, all available witnesses were collated and two hypotheses for a possible stemma codicum were proposed. A text-critical edition of the first eighty Chapters of the Chronicle (which corresponds to some fifty per cent of the entire text) was prepared based on one of the proposed hypotheses for stemma codicum. The Apparatus Criticus of the edition includes not only readings attested in manuscripts, but also conjectures of the text proposed by different scholars. The translation in English is accompanied by commentaries on various aspects, including comparison with other texts, which might have served as a source for the Chronicle, explanations of conjectures, historical and linguistic commentaries. The translation is supplied with transliteration of proper names and ambiguous lexica, which serves for better analysis of the content of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu. ; Die Chronik von Johannes von Nikiu ist eine äußerst wichtige historische Quelle für die Geschichte Ägyptens sowie für die Geschichte der Spätantike im Allgemeinen. Der Text wurde entweder auf Koptisch oder auf Griechisch verfasst und dann ins Arabische übersetzt. 1601 wurde er ins Äthiopische übersetzt und Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ins Amharische. Nach dem heutigen Kenntnisstand sind diese zwei Versionen die einzigen, die erhalten geblieben sind. Die Chronik wurde 1883 von H. Zotenberg zum ersten Mal vollständig editiert und übersetzt. Seit dieser Zeit stieg die Anzahl der verfügbaren Zeugen des Textes und eine neue Edition wurde zu einem offensichtlichen Desideratum. Die vorliegende Dissertation widmet sich der Vorbereitung einer neuen textkritischen Edition der Chronik unter Anwendung der sogenannten genealogisch-rekonstruktiven Methode. Die Dissertation enthält eine Zusammenfassung der Forschungsgeschichte und eine Analyse der Geschichte der Textüberlieferung, einschließlich der Herkunft der amharischen Version. Im Rahmen dieses Projekts wurde ein neues Dossier des Textes erstellt, in das alle verfügbaren direkten und indirekten Zeugen einbezogen wurden. Im Laufe der Arbeit wurden alle verfügbaren Zeugen zusammengetragen und zwei Hypothesen für ein mögliches stemma codicum vorgeschlagen. Eine textkritische Ausgabe der ersten achtzig Kapitel der Chronik (die ungefähr fünfzig Prozent des gesamten Textes ausmachen) wurde auf der Grundlage einer der vorgeschlagenen Hypothesen für das stemma codicum erstellt. Der Apparatus Criticus der Edition umfasst nicht nur die Lesungen von Manuskripten, sondern auch Konjekturen des Textes, die von verschiedenen Forscher_innen vorgeschlagen wurden. Die Übersetzung ins Englische wird von Kommentaren zu verschiedenen Aspekten begleitet, darunter einem Vergleich mit anderen Texten, die als Quelle für die Chronik dienen könnten, Erklärungen zu Vermutungen sowie historischen und sprachlichen Kommentaren. Die Übersetzung schließt zur besseren Analyse des Inhalts der Chronik von Johannes von Nikiu die Transliteration von Eigennamen und mehrdeutigen Lexemen ein.

    This article introduces a new witness to the Chronicle of John of Nikiu (EMML 7919). It analyses the text of this witness alongside the four previously known Ethiopic manuscripts of this work. The article considers the current state of research on the Chronicle of John of Nikiu, including an examination of the textual witnesses, the language of the original composition, and the biographical and historical information of the chronicler. The textual analysis of EMML 7919 demonstrates a strong relation with the text attested in ANL Conti Rossini 27, which suggests that EMML 7919 is highly valuable for the reconstruction of the Ethiopic version of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu. Finally, there is a catalogue entry for EMML 7919, which details the textual and codicological features of the manuscript.

    This article presents a single fragmentary folio that was recently uncovered in excavations at the Monastery of St Antony (Egypt). This folio was discovered in a secondary deposit below the foundations of a church which was in all likelihood constructed in the 1230s. A radiocarbon dating of the folio has returned a date of 1160–1265. Together, these two data make this fragmentary folio the earliest securely datable specimen of an Ethiopic manuscript. This find, thus, provides a new foundation for the analysis of the paleography of the earliest Ethiopic manuscripts, including the gospel manuscripts from Ǝnda Abba Gärima, which contain paleographic features that seem to predate this fragmentary folio. In addition, this find has implications for the regnant periodization of Ethiopic literature and more specifically the history of Ethiopic monastic literature, especially the Zena Abäw. Finally, this folio is among the earliest surviving Aethiopica for the entirety of Egypt and thus provides new information on the relationship between Ethiopic and Coptic Christianity.

    "An Archaeology of Art and Writing offers an in-depth treatment of the image as material culture. Centring on early Egyptian bone, ivory, and wooden labels—one of the earliest inscribed and decorated object groups from burials in the lower Nile Valley—the research is anchored in the image as the site of material action. A key aim of this book is to outline a contextual and reflexive approach to early art and writing as a complement to the traditional focus on iconographic and linguistic meanings. Archaeological and anthropological approaches are integrated with social theories of practice and agency to develop a more holistic perspective that situates early Egyptian imagery in relation to its manufacture, use and final deposition in the funerary context. The dialectical relationships between past embodied practitioners and materials, production techniques, and compositional principles are examined for the insight they provide into changes and continuities in early Egyptian graphical expression across time and space.     This paper investigates the key factors affecting household energy expenditure in Egypt. Based upon the latest 2015 Egyptian HIECS Survey, we develop a quantile regression model with an innovative variable selection approach via Adaptive Lasso Regularization technique to untangle the spectrum of household energy expenditure. Unsurprisingly, income, age, household size, housing size, and employment status are salient predictors for energy expenditure. Housing characteristics have a moderate impact, while socio-economic attributes have a much larger one. The largest variations in household energy expenditures in Egypt are mainly due to variations in income, household size, and housing type. Our findings document substantial differences in household energy expenditure, originating from the asymmetric tails of the energy expenditure distribution. This outcome highlights the added value of implementing quantile regression methods. Our empirical results have various interesting policy implications regarding residential energy efficiency and carbon emissions reduction in Egypt.

    After independence, energy and food subsidies became a cornerstone of the social contracts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. Governments spent heavily to reduce poverty and strengthen their own legitimacy. However, as government rents faded, subsidy spending became financially unsustainable and foreign donors pressed for reforms. Yet, reform has been challenging for all the governments as subsidies affect all consumers, therefore raising the risk of government delegitimisation. Several publications have analysed the subsidy reforms of various MENA countries, but few have systematically analysed their impacts on the prevailing social contracts. This paper shows that reforms in a key policy field such as subsidy spending can affect the nature of social contracts profoundly and distinctly, depending on the reform strategy. It assesses the reform processes that took place in Morocco, Egypt and Iran primarily between 2010 and 2017, thus before the United States once more tightened sanctions against Iran and before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. We argue that governments applied distinct strategies to reduce subsidy spending without provoking major social unrest to reforms, with the effect that the social contracts of the three countries changed in quite different ways.     Middle East and North Africa Investment Policy Perspectives highlights the considerable progress in investment policies made by the region’s governments over the past decade. Yet, the reform momentum needs to be sustained and deepened for the benefits of investment to be shared with society at large and for growth to be sustainable, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting global economic upheaval. The publication takes stock of investment policy trends and reforms in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, and Tunisia, and draws out common challenges, offering suggestions of reform priorities. It considers several dimensions of the policy framework that affect the investment climate and places strong emphasis on how foreign investment can help economies of the region improve their citizens’ lives. The publication serves as reference point, informing policymakers on specific areas as they continue work on leveraging investment to advance inclusive and sustainable growth.
