    Der Wunsch nach einer Korrektur und Verbesserung der menschlichen Natur ist so alt wie die Menschheit selbst. Doch heute stehen für derart tief greifende "Umbauarbeiten" immer perfektere medizinische Technologien zur Verfügung: Schönheitschirurgie, Lifestyle-Psychopharmaka, "Hirnschrittmacher", Gen-Doping. Im Zuge dieser nicht-krankheitsbezogenen Manipulationen wird aus dem Patientenkörper zunehmend eine Baustelle, die aus philosophischer, kulturwissenschaftlicher, medizinethischer und psychologischer Sicht bislang nicht hinreichend inspiziert worden ist. Wo liegen die Grenzen zwischen kreativer Selbstgestaltung und autoaggressiver Selbstverstümmelung, zwischen Selbstverwirklichung und Anpassung, zwischen einer Befreiung von den Fesseln der Natur und der Hybris "transhumaner Expansion"?     "To call into question why certain bodies invite the label "problem" more frequently than other bodies, the contributors draw on scholarship from feminist, race, queer, cultural, disability, and film studies arenas. In Chivers and Markotic's introduction, they draw on disability theory and a range of cinematic examples to explain the term "problem body" in relation to its "projection." In explorations of film noir, illness narratives, classical Hollywood film, Korean film, and European film, the essays reveal the "problem body" as a multiplication of lived circumstances constructed both physically and socially"--Book jacket. "In The Problem Body, editors Sally Chivers and Nicole Markotic bring together the work of eleven of the best disability scholars from the U.S., the U.K., and Canada to explore a new approach to the study of film by concentrating on cinematic representations of what they term "the problem body." The book is a much-needed exploration of the portrayal of disability on film combined with a much-needed rethinking of hierarchies of difference. The editors turned to the existing corpus of disability theory with its impressive insights about the social and cultural mediation of disabled bodies. They then sought, from scholars at every stage of their careers, new ideas about how disabled bodies coexist with a range of other bodies (gendered, queered, racialized, classed, etc.)."

    "Examines the concept and roles of women in selected Spanish discourses and literary texts from the late fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries from the perspective of feminist disability theories. This study explores a wide range of Spanish medical, regulatory and moral discourses, illustrating how such texts inherit, reproduce and propagate an amalgam of Western traditional concepts of female embodiment. It goes on to examine concrete representations of deviant female characters, focusing on the figures of syphilitic prostitutes and physically decayed aged women in literary texts such as Celestina, Lozana andaluza and selected works by Cervantes and Quevedo. Finally, an analysis of the personal testimony of Teresa de Ávila, a nun suffering from neurological disorders, complements the discussion of early modern women's disability. By expanding the meanings of contemporary theories of materiality and the social construction of disability, the book concludes that--paradoxically--femininity, bodily afflictions and mental instability characterized the new literary heroes at the very time Spain was at the apex of its imperial power. "Examines the concept and roles of women in selected Spanish discourses and literary texts from the late fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries from the perspective of feminist disability theories. This study explores a wide range of Spanish medical, regulatory and moral discourses, illustrating how such texts inherit, reproduce and propagate an amalgam of Western traditional concepts of female embodiment. It goes on to examine concrete representations of deviant female characters, focusing on the figures of syphilitic prostitutes and physically decayed aged women in literary texts such as Celestina, Lozana andaluza and selected works by Cervantes and Quevedo. Finally, an analysis of the personal testimony of Teresa de Ávila, a nun suffering from neurological disorders, complements the discussion of early modern women's disability. By expanding the meanings of contemporary theories of materiality and the social construction of disability, the book concludes that--paradoxically--femininity, bodily afflictions and mental instability characterized the new literary heroes at the very time Spain was at the apex of its imperial power. Ultimately, as this study shows, the broken female bodies of pre-industrial Spanish literature reveal the cracks in the foundational principles of power and established truths."--Page 4 of cover

    "Examines the concept and roles of women in selected Spanish discourses and literary texts from the late fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries from the perspective of feminist disability theories. This study explores a wide range of Spanish medical, regulatory and moral discourses, illustrating how such texts inherit, reproduce and propagate an amalgam of Western traditional concepts of female embodiment. It goes on to examine concrete representations of deviant female characters, focusing on the figures of syphilitic prostitutes and physically decayed aged women in literary texts such as Celestina, Lozana andaluza and selected works by Cervantes and Quevedo. Finally, an analysis of the personal testimony of Teresa de Ávila, a nun suffering from neurological disorders, complements the discussion of early modern women's disability. The book provides original readings of canonical Gothic literary and film texts including The Castle of Otranto, The Monk, Frankenstein, Dracula and Nosferatu. This collection of fictionalised dangerous bodies is traced back to the effects of the English Reformation, Spanish Inquisition, French Revolution, Caribbean slavery, Victorian medical malpractice, European anti-Semitism and finally warfare, ranging from the Crimean up to the Vietnam War. The endangered or dangerous body lies at the centre of the clash between victim and persecutor and has generated tales of terror and narratives of horror, which function to either salve, purge or dangerously perpetuate such oppositions.     "Examines the concept and roles of women in selected Spanish discourses and literary texts from the late fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries from the perspective of feminist disability theories. This study explores a wide range of Spanish medical, regulatory and moral discourses, illustrating how such texts inherit, reproduce and propagate an amalgam of Western traditional concepts of female embodiment. It goes on to examine concrete representations of deviant female characters, focusing on the figures of syphilitic prostitutes and physically decayed aged women in literary texts such as Celestina, Lozana andaluza and selected works by Cervantes and Quevedo. Finally, an analysis of the personal testimony of Teresa de Ávila, a nun suffering from neurological disorders, complements the discussion of early modern women's disability. By expanding the meanings of contemporary theories of materiality and the social construction of disability, the book concludes that--paradoxically--femininity, bodily afflictions and mental instability characterized the new literary heroes at the very time Spain was at the apex of its imperial power. Ultimately, as this study shows, the broken female bodies of pre-industrial Spanish literature reveal the cracks in the foundational principles of power and established truths."--Page 4 of cover

That search is told through the experiences of a group of women who came of age in the wake of second and third wave feminism, featuring voices from marginalized and misrepresented groups.Carla Rice pairs popular imagery with personal narratives to expose the "culture of contradiction" where increases in individual body acceptance have been matched by even more restrictive feminine image ideals and norms.
