Les grands mouvements politiques des années 1920 et 1930 ont amené diverses personnes à se joindre à des rassemblements urbains, dont une catégorie de la population nouvellement prise en compte : les adolescents. Leur introduction dans les masses humaines a généré plusieurs récits tout au long de l'entre-deux-guerres. Ce sont ces récits qu'étudie ce livre, lequel tente de comprendre pourquoi l'association de la foule et de l'adolescent figure avec autant de force dans plusieurs textes littéraires de la première moitié du xx e siècle. Par le biais de lectures sociocritiques des Beaux quartiers de Louis Aragon (1936), de La conspiration de Paul Nizan (1938) et du Sursis de Jean-Paul Sartre (1945), il montre comment ce motif particulier permet de révéler des tensions qui traversent l'imaginaire social. L'étude convoque en appui à la démonstration nombre de fictions (Les Thibault, Mort à crédit, Les hommes de bonne volonté, La chronique des Pasquier, etc.) qui entrent en rapport avec ces trois œuvres. Toutes ces publications littéraires sont lues en interaction avec un ensemble composé de textes médicaux, politiques, religieux et urbanistiques."
