    Today we are witnessing an increased use of data visualization in society. Across domains such as work, education and the news, various forms of graphs, charts and maps are used to explain, convince and tell stories. In an era in which more and more data are produced and circulated digitally, and digital tools make visualization production increasingly accessible, it is important to study the conditions under which such visual texts are generated, disseminated and thought to be of societal benefit. This book is a contribution to the multi-disciplined and multi-faceted conversation concerning the forms, uses and roles of data visualization in society. Do data visualizations do 'good' or 'bad'? Do they promote understanding and engagement, or do they do ideological work, privileging certain views of the world over others? The contributions in the book engage with these core questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives.

Chronopolitics, Art & Research Lorenz illuminates the topic of chronopolitics through contributions from art theorists, artists, and artistic researchers. With a foreword by Elizabeth Freeman, whose work has delved extensively on such notions as temporality and body politics, Lorenz invites the reader to explore postcolonial and queer debates through artistic practices that foreground time.In the introduction, Lorenz locates her interest in the numerous intersections between deferral, opacity, and respect talking about "chrononormativity", "respectability", "straight time", and the right not to be clearly seen/read as a defense against aggression. She analyses Kenneth Anger's film "Puce Moment", and later Oliver Husain's "Purfled Promises" in order to discuss further on É. Glissant's concept of opacity encompassing at once otherness - or a sense of a-synchronicity with the norm - in terms of race and queerness.

    Long description: Wenn in wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen etwas sichtbar wird, dann häufig, weil es in experimentellen Verfahren sichtbar gemacht worden ist. Die operative »Sichtbarmachung« erlaubt neue Perspektiven auf die disjunktive Verschränktheit von Wissenschafts- und Mediengeschichte. Eine Archäologie des Sichtbaren - wie sie etwa am Beispiel mikrofotografischer Verfahren der Bakteriologie nachvollzogen werden kann - betont die materiell-diskursive Konfiguration von Wissensproduktion. Die erzeugten »epistemischen Bilder« fungieren demnach als Relais zwischen Erkenntnis und Sichtbarkeit. Sebastian Scholz nähert sich dieser komplexen Konstellation mit dem Ziel, »das Sichtbare« zu problematisieren und Potentiale einer operativen Medien-Onto-Epistemologie aufzuzeigen Biographical note: Sebastian Scholz (Dr. phil.) ist Assistant Professor für Medienwissenschaft an der Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.     In this paper, we describe a computational implementation of the Synthetic difference-in-differences (SDID) estimator of Arkhangelsky et al. (2021) for Stata. Synthetic difference-in-differences can be used in a wide class of circumstances where treatment effects on some particular policy or event are desired, and repeated observations on treated and untreated units are available over time. We lay out the theory underlying SDID, both when there is a single treatment adoption date and when adoption is staggered over time, and discuss estimation and inference in each of these cases. We introduce the sdid command which implements these methods in Stata, and provide a number of examples of use, discussing estimation, inference, and visualization of results.

    Many studies estimate the impact of exposure to some quasi-experimental policy or event using a panel event study design. These models, as a generalized extension of 'difference-in-differences' or two-way fixed effect models, allow for dynamic lags and leads to the event of interest to be estimated, while also controlling for fixed factors (often) by area and time. In this paper we discuss the set-up of the panel event study design in a range of situations, and lay out a number of practical considerations for its estimation. We describe a Stata command eventdd that allows for simple estimation, inference, and visualization of event study models in a range of circumstances. We then provide a number of examples to illustrate eventdd's use and flexibility, as well as its interaction with various native Stata routines, and other relevant user-written libraries such as reghdfe and boottest.

    This paper introduces a simple procedure to construct ownership maps in Stata, uses a new method to map the development of the global network of multinational business groups over time and investigates the development of core components of the network. Based on Bureau van Dijk's ORBIS database, a full panel of ownership structures from 2000-2018 is reconstructed. The data is subjected to a descriptive analysis and subsequently used to identify key locations within the network. Ownership structures are used to identify outliers in the network even in the absence of financial data on the firm level. The identified locations largely overlap with results in the literature, but also point towards previously overlooked destinations. The aggregate ownership network at the country level is used to provide an intertemporal perspective on countries’ development paths within the global network of multinational companies and sheds new light on MNE's expansion paths.

    Abstract: Despite the flexibility that a TEI-based workflow offers for preparing editions based on collating several manuscripts, textual scholars working with XML-TEI edition files face a lack of domain-specific auxiliary tools. The TEI-CAT partially fills this gap by providing interfaces for visualizing the transcription of different manuscripts and for exploring the encoded variations and detecting common mistakes. While not properly supporting several types of textual variation and editorial intervention, these tools satisfy most of the needs usually arising during transcription and collation. The image annotation tool complements them by allowing users to generate TEI-compliant code. This tool very flexibly describes or comments on facsimile layout and content and thus is particularly helpful in preparing digital editions. Finally, the PDF-via-LaTeX exporting facility extends the scope of the toolbox towards traditional paper-based publishing, which often remains an editor’s ultimate ...

    Abstract: The Stoffe-project is a text-genetic hybrid edition that digitally processes and presents the works of the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990). The estate is part of the founding inventory of the Swiss Literary Archives (SLA), where it has been indexed since 1991, one year after Dürrenmatt’s death, and initially digitally processed in a preliminary version. This served as the scientific basis for the five-volume print edition that was published in May 2021. Editors are Rudolf Probst and Ulrich Weber. The sophisticated new edition is linked to a digital edition in which Dürrenmatt’s autobiographical works can be explored. In the three sections “Text”, “Genesis”, and “Archive”, the online edition offers, on the one hand, the text of the selection edition in digital form, and, on the other hand, text-genetic tools for orientation, as well as the entire manuscript material in the scope of about 30,000 leaves in the form of facsimiles.     Abstract: The Jugend Edition is a critical edition of Wolfgang Koeppen’s Jugend, which was published in 1976. It took more than fifteen years for Koeppen to write Jugend. The edition offers the opportunity to dive into the work of Wolfgang Koeppen and to follow him along during his writing process. After his death, all of the material related to Jugend was digitized and is presented as a complex dossier génétique. This review provides an overview of the presented documents, as well as the main features and appearance of the edition, with a special emphasis on its presentation of genetic relationships

    Long description: Wenn in wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen etwas sichtbar wird, dann häufig, weil es in experimentellen Verfahren sichtbar gemacht worden ist. Die operative »Sichtbarmachung« erlaubt neue Perspektiven auf die disjunktive Verschränktheit von Wissenschafts- und Mediengeschichte. Eine Archäologie des Sichtbaren - wie sie etwa am Beispiel mikrofotografischer Verfahren der Bakteriologie nachvollzogen werden kann - betont die materiell-diskursive Konfiguration von Wissensproduktion. Die erzeugten »epistemischen Bilder« fungieren demnach als Relais zwischen Erkenntnis und Sichtbarkeit. Sebastian Scholz nähert sich dieser komplexen Konstellation mit dem Ziel, »das Sichtbare« zu problematisieren und Potentiale einer operativen Medien-Onto-Epistemologie aufzuzeigen Biographical note: Sebastian Scholz (Dr. phil.) ist Assistant Professor für Medienwissenschaft an der Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.     Nonparametric unit-root tests are a useful addendum to the tool-box of time-series analysis. They tend to trade off power for enhanced robustness features. We consider combinations of the RURS (seasonal range unit roots) test statistic and a variant of the level-crossings count. This combination exploits two main characteristics of seasonal unit-root models, the range expansion typical of integrated processes and the low frequency of changes among main seasonal shapes. The combination succeeds in achieving power gains over the component tests. Simulations explore the finite-sample behavior relative to traditional parametric tests.
