    Dynamic Matter investigates the life histories of Renaissance objects. Eschewing the critical tendency to study how objects relate to human needs and desires, this work foregrounds the objects themselves, demonstrating their potential to transform their environments as they travel across time and space.Integrating early modern material theories with recent critical approaches in Actor-Network Theory and object-oriented ontology, this volume extends Aristotle’s theory of dynameos—which conceptualizes matter as potentiality—and applies it to objects featured in early modern texts such as Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, Robert Hooke’s Micrographia, and William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Individual chapters explore the dynameos of matter by examining its manifestations in particular forms: combs are inscribed with words and brushed through human hair; feathers are incorporated into garments and artwork; Prince Rupert’s glasswork drops explode; a whale becomes animated by the power of a magical bracelet; and books are drowned. These case studies highlight the potentiality matter itself possesses and that which it activates in other matter. A theorization of objects grounded in Renaissance materialist thought, Dynamic Matter examines the richness of things themselves; the larger, multiple, and changing networks in which things circulate; and the networks created by these transformative objects.In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Anna Riehl Bertolet, Erika Mary Boeckeler, Naomi Howell, Emily E.     Die Studie problematisiert die osmanisch-griechische Identität anhand des entsprechenden Diskurses im Vereinsjournal des Griechischen Philologischen Vereins in Konstantinopel. Als Hauptstadt verkörperte Konstantinopel die Transformationen, denen der osmanische Staat und die osmanische Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert unterlagen. Die im Vereinsjournal gespiegelten Aktivitäten der Gesellschaft sind als Antwort auf diese Transformationen zu sehen und somit Ausdruck des zugrunde liegenden Selbstbildes. Daher gilt das Interesse gleichermaßen der Aufzeichnung der relevanten Informationen wie den damit zusammenhängenden Interpretationen. Über den griechisch-orthodoxen Kontext des Vereins hinaus erörtert die Arbeit in diesem Zusammenhang das Konzept der Moderne sowohl im internationalen Rahmen als auch innerhalb des osmanischen Reichs. This study contributes to the understanding of Ottoman-Greek identity by exploring the discourse that the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople has published on this topic in its journal. As capital of the Ottoman Empire, the city of Constantinople epitomized the transformations both Ottoman state and society experienced in the 19th century. The specific spatial and temporal position of the Society’s activities, as reflected in its journal, can be regarded as an answer to those very transformations and thus as an expression of the underlying sense of identity. Equal emphasis is placed on the recording of the relevant information and on its coherent interpretation. In order to avoid applying too narrow a view by placing the Society exclusively in an orthodox or Greek context, the concept of modernity as a shared experience on an international scale and within the Ottoman Empire is established as the principal frame of reference.

    Gunnar Myrdal published Asian Drama in 1968, a work which made important analytical contributions to our understanding of development but was deeply pessimistic about Asia's future prospects. Since then, contrary to Myrdal's expectations, Asia's development has been remarkable, although transformations have been uneven across countries and unequal between people. This paper explains the conception and design of the UNU-WIDER study on Asian Transformations, which seeks to analyse the amazing story of economic development in Asia over the past 50 years. It begins with reflections on Gunnar Myrdal, the author, and rethinking Asian Drama, the book, in retrospect 50 years later. It goes on to outline the rationale and objective of the study. It then discusses some critical issues and lessons that emerge - diversity in development, history and context, economic growth and structural change, wellbeing of people, markets and governments, economic openness, and institutions and policies - to serve as a teaser. It concludes with some brief reflections on Asia’s future prospects over the next 25 years.

    Die Studie problematisiert die osmanisch-griechische Identität anhand des entsprechenden Diskurses im Vereinsjournal des Griechischen Philologischen Vereins in Konstantinopel. Als Hauptstadt verkörperte Konstantinopel die Transformationen, denen der osmanische Staat und die osmanische Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert unterlagen. Die im Vereinsjournal gespiegelten Aktivitäten der Gesellschaft sind als Antwort auf diese Transformationen zu sehen und somit Ausdruck des zugrunde liegenden Selbstbildes. Daher gilt das Interesse gleichermaßen der Aufzeichnung der relevanten Informationen wie den damit zusammenhängenden Interpretationen. Über den griechisch-orthodoxen Kontext des Vereins hinaus erörtert die Arbeit in diesem Zusammenhang das Konzept der Moderne sowohl im internationalen Rahmen als auch innerhalb des osmanischen Reichs. This study contributes to the understanding of Ottoman-Greek identity by exploring the discourse that the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople has published on this topic in its journal. As capital of the Ottoman Empire, the city of Constantinople epitomized the transformations both Ottoman state and society experienced in the 19th century. The specific spatial and temporal position of the Society’s activities, as reflected in its journal, can be regarded as an answer to those very transformations and thus as an expression of the underlying sense of identity. Equal emphasis is placed on the recording of the relevant information and on its coherent interpretation. In order to avoid applying too narrow a view by placing the Society exclusively in an orthodox or Greek context, the concept of modernity as a shared experience on an international scale and within the Ottoman Empire is established as the principal frame of reference.

    This paper analyses the role of tertiary education on rural development. Using census data on villages in India for 2011, we find that skilled workers have had an important impact on rural prosperity. A 1 percentage point rise in the share of the village population with tertiary education raises per capita consumption by around 7.2 per cent. Our results are robust to alternative measures of income and are not confounded by better institutions. Among the mechanisms at work, we find that households with tertiary-educated members register higher agricultural gross income per unit of land. Their contribution to agriculture is also suggested by satellite-based spatial net primary productivity measures. We inform the larger literature on structural transformations and contend that such transformations can also happen within rural areas.

    Although many macroeconomic time series are assumed to follow nonlinear processes, nonlinear models often do not provide better predictions than their linear counterparts. Furthermore, such models easily become very complex and difficult to estimate. The aim of this study is to investigate whether simple nonlinear extensions of autoregressive processes are able to provide more accurate forecasting results than linear models. Therefore, simple autoregressive processes are extended by means of nonlinear transformations (quadratic, cubic, trigonometric, exponential functions) of lagged time series observations and autoregression residuals. The proposed forecasting models are applied to a large set of macroeconomic and financial time series for 10 European countries. Findings suggest that such models, including nonlinear transformation of lagged autoregression residuals, are somewhat able to provide better forecasting results than simple linear models. Thus, it may be possibile to improve the forecasting accuracy of linear models by including nonlinear components.
