    Street theatre and the production of postindustrial space explores how street theatre transforms industrial space into postindustrial space. Deindustrializing communities have increasingly turned to cultural projects to commemorate industrial heritage while simultaneously generating surplus value and jobs in a changing economy. Through analysis of French street theatre companies working out of converted industrial sites, this book reveals how theatre and performance more generally participate in and make historical sense of ongoing urban and economic change. The book argues, firstly, that deindustrialization and redevelopment rely on the spatial and temporal logics of theatre and performance. Redevelopment requires theatrical events and performative acts that revise, resituate, and re-embody particular pasts. The book proposes working memory as a central metaphor for these processes. The book argues, secondly, that in contemporary France street theatre has emerged as working memory's privileged artistic form. If the transition from industrial to postindustrial space relies on theatrical logics, those logics will manifest differently depending on geographic context. The book links the proliferation of street theatre in France since the 1970s to the crisis in Fordist-Taylorist modernity. How have street theatre companies converted spaces of manufacturing into spaces of theatrical production? How do these companies (with municipal governments and developers) connect their work to the work that occurred in these spaces in the past? How do those connections manifest in theatrical events, and how do such events give shape and meaning to redevelopment? Street theatre’s function is both economic and historiographic. It makes the past intelligible as past and useful to the present.

    Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679) was the most prolific poet and playwright of his age. During his long life, roughly coincinding with the Dutch Golden Age, he wrote over thirty tragedies. He was a famous figure in political and artistic circles of Amsterdam, a contemporary and acquaintance of Grotius and Rembrandt, but in general well acquainted with Latin humanists, Dutch scholars, authors and Amsterdam burgomasters. He fuelled literary, religious and political debates. His tragedy 'Gysbreght van Aemstel', which was played on the occasion of the opening of the stone city theatre in 1638, was to become the most famous play in Dutch history, and can probably boast holding the record for the longest tradition of annual performance in Europe. In general, Vondel’s texts are literary works in the full sense of the word, complex and inexhasutive; attracting attention throughout the centuries.

    Transferential Poetics presents a method for bringing theories of affect to the study of poetics. Informed by the thinking of Silvan Tomkins, Melanie Klein, and Wilfred Bion, it offers new interpretations of the poetics of four major American artists: Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and Andy Warhol. The author emphasizes the close, reflexive attention each of these artists pays to the transfer of feeling between text and reader, or composition and audience— their transferential poetics. The book’s historical route from Poe to Warhol culminates in television, a technology and cultural form that makes affect distinctly available to perception. The peculiar theatricality of these four artists, Frank argues, can best be understood as a reciprocal framing relation between the bodily means of communicating affect (by face and voice) and technologies of graphic reproduction

    "Miguel de Cervantes's experimentation with theatricality is frequently tied to the notion of revelation and disclosure of hidden truths. Drawing the Curtain showcases the elements of theatricality that characterize Cervantes's prose and analyses the ways in which he uses theatricality in his own literary production. Bringing together the works of well-known scholars who draw from a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches, this collection demonstrates how Cervantes exploits revelation and disclosure to create dynamic dramatic moments that surprise and engage observers and readers. Hewing closely to Peter Brook's notion of the bare or empty stage, Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. Martín argue that Cervantes's omnipresent concern with theatricality manifests not only in his drama but also in the myriad metatheatrical instances dispersed throughout his prose works. In doing so, Drawing the Curtain sheds light on the ways in which Cervantes forces his readers to engage with themes that are central to his life and works, including love, freedom, truth, confinement, and otherness."--

    Das geistliche Weihnachtsspiel des Mittelalters war Bestandteil eines umfassenden Festkalenders und zeichnete sich durch eine thematische Vielfalt des weihnachtlichen Repertoires aus. Dennoch wurden weihnachtliche Spieltexte durch die traditionelle Theater- und Literaturwissenschaft oftmals als künstlerisch wenig anspruchsvolle Ableger der Oster- und Passionsspiele marginalisiert. Diese Ausgangssituation nimmt diese Arbeit zum Anlass, vier mittelalterliche Weihnachtsspieltexte des deutschen Sprachraums als geistliches „Kunsttheater“ im theaterwissenschaftlichen Diskurs sichtbarer zu machen. Das Augenmerk richtet sich auf die Untersuchung der Spiele als theatrale Verhandlungsorte sozialer Energien unter kulturpoetischer Optik. The medieval Christmas play was part of an extensive festive calendar and was characterized by a thematic diversity of the Christmas repertoire. Nonetheless, Christmas plays were often marginalized by traditional theatre and literary studies as artistically not very demanding offshoots of the Easter and Passion plays. This initial situation motivates the aim of this work to make four medieval Christmas plays from the German speaking area more visible as “Kunsttheater” (“theatre”) within the discourse of theatre studies. The focus lies on the investigation of the plays as theatrical negotiating places of social energy under a cultural-poetic perspective.

Pathos ist hier kein Verstoß gegen den guten „ethisch-ästhetischen“ Geschmack, sondern eine zentrale Dimension seines elegischen Werks im Zeichen der Shoah. Im Lichte von Aby Warburgs Begriff der Pathosformel, die die Ausdrucksintensität zugleich steigert und zähmt, werden Sebalds vieldiskutierter Gebrauch von dokumentarischem Material und Bildern, aber auch diskretere Motive wie Körpergebärden und die Bezüge zu Film, Theater und Oper als Formen des Pathos neu gelesen.

    Transferential Poetics presents a method for bringing theories of affect to the study of poetics. Informed by the thinking of Silvan Tomkins, Melanie Klein, and Wilfred Bion, it offers new interpretations of the poetics of four major American artists: Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and Andy Warhol. The author emphasizes the close, reflexive attention each of these artists pays to the transfer of feeling between text and reader, or composition and audience— their transferential poetics. The book’s historical route from Poe to Warhol culminates in television, a technology and cultural form that makes affect distinctly available to perception. The peculiar theatricality of these four artists, Frank argues, can best be understood as a reciprocal framing relation between the bodily means of communicating affect (by face and voice) and technologies of graphic reproduction

Informed by the thinking of Silvan Tomkins, Melanie Klein, and Wilfred Bion, it offers new interpretations of the poetics of four major American artists: Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and Andy Warhol. The author emphasizes the close, reflexive attention each of these artists pays to the transfer of feeling between text and reader, or composition and audience— their transferential poetics. The book’s historical route from Poe to Warhol culminates in television, a technology and cultural form that makes affect distinctly available to perception. The peculiar theatricality of these four artists, Frank argues, can best be understood as a reciprocal framing relation between the bodily means of communicating affect (by face and voice) and technologies of graphic reproduction

    The superhero narrative is typically premised on the conflict between the hero and the villain, the mythical struggle between good and evil. It therefore promotes a Manichaeanworldview where good and evil are clearly distinguishable quantities. This bipolar model is questioned in the Batman movies of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan.Since his creation in 1939, Batman has blurred the line between black and white unlike any other classic comic book superhero. As a “floating signifier”, he symbolizes thepermeability of boundaries, for his liminal character inhabits a world between light and darkness, order and anarchy, hero and villain. Drawing on the complex ambiguity of the character, Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan deconstruct the traditional dichotomy of good and evil in the superhero narrative by reversing its polarity and emphasizing the fictionality of it all. Although they differ in style and method, both filmmakers invite us to overcome the Manichaean belief in favor of a more ambivalent and sophisticated viewpoint.

    "Miguel de Cervantes's experimentation with theatricality is frequently tied to the notion of revelation and disclosure of hidden truths. Drawing the Curtain showcases the elements of theatricality that characterize Cervantes's prose and analyses the ways in which he uses theatricality in his own literary production. Bringing together the works of well-known scholars who draw from a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches, this collection demonstrates how Cervantes exploits revelation and disclosure to create dynamic dramatic moments that surprise and engage observers and readers. Hewing closely to Peter Brook's notion of the bare or empty stage, Esther Fernández and Adrienne L. Martín argue that Cervantes's omnipresent concern with theatricality manifests not only in his drama but also in the myriad metatheatrical instances dispersed throughout his prose works. In doing so, Drawing the Curtain sheds light on the ways in which Cervantes forces his readers to engage with themes that are central to his life and works, including love, freedom, truth, confinement, and otherness."--

Es beleuchtet das Verhältnis zwischen Sebalds Stilideal der unpathetischen, leidenschaftslosen Rede und seiner Ethik der Mitleidenschaft, der Em-Pathie als Protest gegen politische A-Pathie. Pathos ist hier kein Verstoß gegen den guten „ethisch-ästhetischen“ Geschmack, sondern eine zentrale Dimension seines elegischen Werks im Zeichen der Shoah. Im Lichte von Aby Warburgs Begriff der Pathosformel, die die Ausdrucksintensität zugleich steigert und zähmt, werden Sebalds vieldiskutierter Gebrauch von dokumentarischem Material und Bildern, aber auch diskretere Motive wie Körpergebärden und die Bezüge zu Film, Theater und Oper als Formen des Pathos neu gelesen.
