    Johann Baptist Cramer (1771–1858), Spross einer kurpfälzischen Musikerfamilie, ist heute höchstens noch durch seine Klavieretüden bekannt; zu Lebzeiten war er eine öffentliche Gestalt der europäischen Musikwelt, und zwar nicht nur als Pianist, Komponist und Lehrer, sondern auch als Unternehmer im Klavierbau und Verlagswesen. Durch diese Mehrfachfunktion, wie sie viele ›Pianistes Compositeurs‹ seiner Zeit ausfüllten, kam es zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen verschiedenen Bereichen des Musiklebens, zwischen instrumentaler Technologie, menschlicher Fingertechnik und musikalischer Ästhetik, zwischen Unternehmertum, Kanonbildung und Populärkultur. Im vorliegenden Band werden Cramers Leben, Werk und Umfeld aus verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht mit Anregungen für Aufführungs- und Improvisationpraktiken heute. Mit Beiträgen von Sanne Behrends Lorenzen | Gigliola di Grazia | Michael Fischer | Christa Jost | Janina Klassen | Leonardo Miucci | Laurens Patzlaff | Claudia Schweitzer | Philipp Teriete | Rüdiger Thomsen-Fürst | Edoardo Torbianelli Johann Baptist Cramer (1771-1858), descendant of a family of musicians from the German Kurpfalz, is known today at most for his piano etudes; during his lifetime he was a public figure in the European musical world, not only as a pianist, composer, and teacher, but also as an entrepreneur in piano manufacturing and publishing. Through this multiple function, as many 'pianistes compositeurs' of his time fulfilled, interactions occurred between different areas of musical life, between instrumental technology, human dexterity, and musical aesthetics, between entrepreneurship, canon formation, and popular culture. In this volume, Cramer's life, work, and environment are examined from a variety of perspectives with suggestions for performance and improvisational practices today.     This paper reviews recent empirical literature on policy drivers of two educational outcomes - years of schooling and rates of return - that form the OECD’s aggregate measure of human capital. The paper sets the literature findings into the context of current educational polices in place in OECD countries. While much of the empirical results are mixed, depend on country and time coverage as well as estimation methods, the review identifies the following policies most likely to promote better educational outcomes: quality pre-primary education, quality teaching, accountability and autonomy of teaching institutions, comprehensive lower secondary education and availability of individual financing for the pursuit of higher education.

    Abstract: The article refers to relations in the process of communication between teacher and students. The author uses classical literature and an expert interview with an experienced school teacher to bring her point across. The author feels that the described issues are of particular significance for beginner pedagogues. Shakespeare's genius gives a broad perspective on the subject of communication, because in both comedies and dramas we observe the importance of the communication aspect, which may be transferred to the relationship between students and the teacher. This gives a broad picture of the possible scenarios that will appear in the teacher's work and allows one to draw conclusions from the heroes' mistakes, which may be identical to those made in the relationships with students

    This paper investigates the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in choosing a teaching career using data from the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia. We find that the opportunity costs of becoming a teacher vary by gender: women enjoy a small wage premium, whilst males suffer a large wage penalty. We also find that non-monetary aspects and job amenities (such as motivation for the job, job security, and work/family life balance) have a different influence on teaching careers by gender, which can influence the sorting of male and female teachers across government and private schools. Notwithstanding evidence of positive selection into teaching in terms of cognitive ability and motivation for the job, the asymmetries in opportunity costs and non-monetary aspects reveal that introducing differentiated contracts tailored to gender preferences may influence teachers' recruitment by gender. However, we caution that such prospective initiatives need to balance the trade-off between attracting talented and motivated individuals into teaching and promoting gender equality, which arises from the data.

    This paper reviews recent empirical literature on policy drivers of two educational outcomes - years of schooling and rates of return - that form the OECD’s aggregate measure of human capital. The paper sets the literature findings into the context of current educational polices in place in OECD countries. While much of the empirical results are mixed, depend on country and time coverage as well as estimation methods, the review identifies the following policies most likely to promote better educational outcomes: quality pre-primary education, quality teaching, accountability and autonomy of teaching institutions, comprehensive lower secondary education and availability of individual financing for the pursuit of higher education.

    This policy brief presents the results of the 2023 data collection on the structural indicators for monitoring education and training systems regarding the teaching profession, which aims to provide evidence and analysis for the Education and Training Monitor (ETM). The 2021 Council Resolution on a strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training towards the European Education Area invited the Commission to propose indicators on the teaching profession (1). Following this resolution, the Commission developed a dedicated dashboard with indicators capturing different aspects regarding the attractiveness of the teaching profession. The teaching profession is also the theme of the opening chapter of the 2023 ETM (European Commission, 2023), which analyses these indicators on the attractiveness of the teaching profession and provides further insights into teacher shortages. This report provides evidence and analysis regarding five key policy areas: 1. policies to address teacher shortages, in general or for certain subjects; 2. policies to address teacher shortages in certain geographic areas or disadvantaged schools; 3. alternative pathways leading to a teaching qualification, other than the mainstream initial teacher education (ITE); 4. the use of appraisals to address teachers' needs for professional development and specialist support; 5. the role of teacher appraisals in career and salary progression.

    Teachers play a vital role in our societies by facilitating the process of students' learning and socialisation, and promoting critical thinking (or, more generally, the so-called '21st century skills') as well as civic engagement. As noted in a Eurydice report (2021, p. 11), teachers 'play the most important role in making education a fruitful experience', and the COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of the profession in ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to access high-quality education (Eurydice, 2021).     We examine whether and how teachers' major fields of study affect students' achievement, exploiting within-student variation across subfields in natural science (i.e., physics, chemistry, biology, and Earth science). Using middle-school students' data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and controlling student-teacher fixed effects, we find that teachers with college majors in natural sciences improve students' achievement of subfields in natural sciences corresponding to their subfields of college majors. Teaching practices explain about half of the effect of teachers' major fields. Most of the effects of teaching practices are accounted for by teachers' preparation for teaching science topics. The results are robust to potential endogenous matching between students and teachers.
