    Translated by Anton Hieke Little defines human life more than the biological sexes. The concept of the binary sexes greatly affects our choices given in society, our income, and our visibility. Moreover, it is also the root for profound discrimination. Today, the idea that the binary sexes are nature-given is so intrinsically woven into the fabric of human life that we tend to forget just how modern the concept is. We also tend to forget that it does not have to be more than a bump on the path to a just society. Drawing from philosophical, historical, and biological perspectives, the author challenges existing beliefs in the inevitability of the binary nature of the human sexes. The study compellingly argues for the existence of many biological sexes, not merely two. It also outlines just how otherwise overcome assumptions still shape our seemingly modern understanding of the most basic classification of our societies: that of the biological sexes and the attributes piled upon them

    Combining original historical research with literary analysis, Adam Barrows takes a provocative look at the creation of world standard time in 1884 and rethinks the significance of this remarkable moment in modernism for both the processes of imperialism and for modern literature. As representatives from twenty-four nations argued over adopting the Prime Meridian, and thereby measuring time in relation to Greenwich, England, writers began experimenting with new ways of representing human temporality. Barrows finds this experimentation in works as varied as Victorian adventure novels, high modernist texts, and South Asian novels—including the work of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, H. Rider Haggard, Bram Stoker, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad. Demonstrating the investment of modernist writing in the problems of geopolitics and in the public discourse of time, Barrows argues that it is possible, and productive, to rethink the politics of modernism through the politics of time

    Der Tatbestand der Untreue (§ 266 StGB) hat in den letzten Jahren einen stetigen Bedeutungszuwachs erfahren. Zugleich nahm die Kritik zu, dass der Tatbestand nicht mit dem strafrechtlichen Bestimmtheitsgrundsatz zu vereinbaren sei. Zwar geht das Bundesverfassungsgericht davon aus, dass der Tatbestand des § 266 StGB noch mit dem Bestimmtheitsgrundsatz zu vereinbaren sei. Zugleich forderte es die Rechtsprechung und die Wissenschaft auf, die tatbestandlichen Voraussetzungen des Untreuetatbestandes weiter zu konkretisieren.Dies ist der Startpunkt der Arbeit. Der Autor stellt zunächst die hypothetische Einwilligung dar, um anschließend zu klären, ob eine Übertragung auf den Untreuetatbestand unter den besonderen Voraussetzungen des Vermögensstrafrechts denkbar ist. Dabei bezieht der Autor auch die Systemtheorie, die ökonomische Analyse und den freiheitlichen Rechtsbegriff in seine Überlegungen mit ein. The embezzlement and abuse of trust, which is punishable according to section 266 of the German criminal code, has experienced a steady increase in importance in recent years. At the same time, there has been growing criticism that this crime is incompatible with the principle of certainty under German criminal law. The German Federal Constitutional Court assumes that the stipulations in section 266 of the German criminal code are still compatible with the principle of certainty under German criminal law. At the same time, it has called on legal circles and academia to further concretise what constitutes the embezzlement and abuse of trust.That is the starting point of this study. The author first of all presents the conditions of hypothetical consent, in order to subsequently clarify whether it can be applied to section 266 of the German criminal code under the special conditions of property criminal law. In doing so, the author also takes into account system theory, economic analysis and the liberal concept of law.

Das Buch beleuchtet die historischen, politischen und ideengeschichtlichen Hintergründe der Entwicklung der russischen Arabistik in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ignaty J. Krachkovsky (1883–1951) is one of the most important Oriental scholars of the 20th century and is considered the founder of modern Arabic studies in Russia. The German edition of his biography by Anna A. Dolinina (1923–2017) presents his eventful life and exciting academic career to the German-speaking readership. Numerous documents from the archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including Kračkovskij's letters and diaries, form the basis of the study alongside the personal memories of the biographer. The book sheds light on the historical, political, and intellectual history of the development of Arabic studies in Russia in the first half of the 20th century.

What status can be attributed to morphology today? Is it a doctrine or a method? This AZP supplement explores the various uses of morphology through exemplary studies. The underlying hypothesis is that morphology serves as a paradigm in the sciences. The contributions show that even in the present day, morphology can gain an integrative function for seemingly heterogeneous dimensions and fields across the sciences – just as it was already able to serve Goethe as a unifying bond between his supposedly separate practices as poet, artist and scientist.

    Beginning with Tolstoy’s first extant records of his written œuvre, this anthology assembles seventy-seven unabridged texts that cover more than seven decades of his life, from 1835 to 1910. It constitutes the most complete single-volume edition to date of the rich variety of Tolstoy’s philosophical output: apothegmatic sayings, visions, intimate sketchbook and day notes, book reviews, open letters, dialogues, pedagogic talks, public lectures, programs and rules for personal behavior, fictions, and reminiscences. Most of these newly translated and thoroughly annotated texts have never been available in English. Among the four reprinted translations personally checked and authorized by Tolstoy is the text titled “Tolstoy on Venezuela,” an archival restoration of an authentic first publication in English of “Patriotism, or Peace?” (1896) that had been deemed lost. In the inaugural piece, a seven-year-old Tolstoy describes violent but natural animal life in contrast with the lazy life of a peaceful barnyard in the countryside. The last entry in the anthology written by an eighty-year-old Tolstoy for his grandchildren provides a lesson on vegetarianism and non-violence that a hungry wolf teaches a hungry boy during their conversation when both are on their way to lunch. It was the insolvable, the “scandalous,” problems of philosophy that never gave Tolstoy any rest: freedom of the will, religious tolerance, gender inequality, the tonal shape of music, the value of healthy life habits, the responsibilities of teaching, forms of social protest, cognitive development, science in society, the relation between body and mind, charity and labor, human dignity and public service, sexual psychology, national war doctrines, suicide, individual sacrifice, the purposes of making art. And always: What are the sources of violence? Why should we engage in politics? Why do we need governments? How can one practice non-violence? What is the meaning of our irrepressible desire to seek and find meaning? Why can't we live without loving? The typeset proofs of his final insights were brought to Tolstoy for approval when he was already on his deathbed. The reader will find all the texts in the exact shape and order of completion as Tolstoy left them. No matter their brevity or the occasion on which they were written, these works exemplify Tolstoy as an artistically inventive and intellectually absorbing thinker

    Eine soziale Wissenschaftstheorie schlägt einen Ausweg aus den aktuellen Kontroversen in der Wissenschaftsforschung vor, der erfordert: a) den nicht unabhängigen Charakter der Wissenschaftsphilosophie anzuerkennen; b) den erkenntnistheoretischen Status der Naturwissenschaften als einziges Erkenntnisideal zu überdenken; c) sich auf der Suche nach einer neuen methodischen Erfahrungauf die Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften zu konzentrieren; d) aufzuhören, Fallstudien als Version der ‚neutralen Sprache der Beobachtung‘ oder als ‚entscheidende Rechtfertigung‘ einer Theorie zu betrachten; und e) die Erklärungskraft der lokalen Kontextualisierung mit der Projektion und Konstruktion zukünftiger Wirkungskontexte wissenschaftlicher Ideen zu verbinden. Die Hinwendung zur Sozialität ordnet die Wissenschaftsforschung keiner Doktrin unter; sie ist vielmehr ein ökumenischer Appell zur Maximierung philosophischer Sensibilität und Offenheit. A social philosophy of science proposes a way out of current controversies in scientific research that requires: a) acknowledging the non-independent character of the philosophy of science; b) reconsidering the epistemological status of the natural sciences as the only ideal of knowledge; c) focusing on the social sciences and the humanities in search of a new methodological experience; d) ceasing to consider case studies as a version of the ‘neutral language of observation’ or as a ‘crucial justification’ of a theory; and e) combining the explanatory power of local contextualisation with the projection and construction of future contexts of the impact of scientific ideas. The shift towards sociality does not subordinate science studies to any doctrine; it is rather an ecumenical appeal to maximise philosophical sensitivity and openness.
