    Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buchs stehen drei Redeereignisse auf dem Wormser Reichstag von 1521. Erstmals werden Anklage, Verteidigung und Aburteilung Martin Luthers als rhetorischer Zusammenhang untersucht. Hat Luther seine berühmte Rede wirklich mit dem Ausruf "Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders!" geschlossen? Was hat die "sola scriptura"-Forderung mit Luthers merkwürdigen Nachverhandlungen in Worms zu tun? Gehört das alles zur Renaissance und zum Beginn der Neuzeit? Es tritt ein Komplex von Kommunikationsmaßnahmen um Luthers PR-Team und um seine eigenen rhetorischen Interaktionen auf dem Reichstag hervor. Die Rhetorik zeigt sich hier als der große Dynamikfaktor der Geschichte. Religionsgeschichtlich ragt Luthers Weckruf von 1517 als Datum heraus. Säkulargeschichtlich hingegen ist 1521 das entscheidende Jahr eines epochalen Aufbruchs zu neuen politischen Dimensionen. Schlüsselbegriff wird ab jetzt der "Protest". Er beginnt sich zwar erst langsam, aber unwiderruflich, als sozialkommunikative Institution in der westlichen Welt zu etablieren und zum komplementären Faktor gegenüber der Macht zu werden The book addresses the events surrounding three rhetorical events at the Diet of Worms in 1521. For the first time, Luther’s accusation, defense, and condemnation are examined in terms of their rhetorically motivated context. Did Luther truly conclude his speech with the call, "Here I stand, I can do no other"? Is all of this the start of early modernity? And to what extent did Worms mark the launch of "protest" as a new social institution?

    We examine individuals' decision to attend Black Lives Matter protests and demonstrations calling for less stringent public health measures to combat COVID-19 (e.g., for swifter reopening of businesses). Our analysis is facilitated by a unique staggered panel data set originally constructed to study the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19. A wave of data collected in the summer of 2020 was expanded to capture details about protest attendance, political views, and support for different movements. We find that protests may provide novel and policy relevant information about potentially widely-held and mainstream social preferences that are obscured by extremist politics. We present evidence that protesters are a diverse yet representative part of the population and that the decision to protest is deliberate in the sense that it is responsive to incentives and issue salience. We also provide novel evidence of movement overlap - attending a Black Lives Matter protest is associated with a higher likelihood of attending a protest calling for fewer public health restrictions. This finding counters typical narratives characterizing these two protest movements as diametrically opposed. In a political landscape dominated by the voices of extremists, our findings suggest we can draw a line between recent protest behavior and a less radical and less extreme majority (sometimes called the "exhausted" majority) that espouses more nuanced views than the politicians, policymakers and institutions that are supposed to represent them.

    We study the electoral impact of protesting against the far right by investigating the demonstrations held during the 2002 French presidential elections against far-right candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen. Instrumenting rally attendance with rainfall while factoring in that some municipalities never host protests, we find that larger protests reduced both the number of votes for Le Pen and the number of abstentions, while increasing the number of votes for Chirac. Regarding the mechanisms behind these results, we show that protests reduced the social desirability of voting for Le Pen, the support for his policies, and generated spatial spillovers through local media.

    This paper exploits the idiosyncratic line of contact separating Allied and Soviet troops within East Germany at the end of WWII to study political resistance in a non-democracy. When Nazi Germany surrendered, 40% of what would become the authoritarian German Democratic Republic was initially under Allied control but was ceded to Soviet control less than two months later. Brief Allied exposure increased protests during the major 1953 uprising. We use novel data on the appointment of local mayors and a retrospective survey to argue that even a "glimpse of freedom" can foster civilian opposition to dictatorship.

    Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buchs stehen drei Redeereignisse auf dem Wormser Reichstag von 1521. Erstmals werden Anklage, Verteidigung und Aburteilung Martin Luthers als rhetorischer Zusammenhang untersucht. Hat Luther seine berühmte Rede wirklich mit dem Ausruf „Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders!“ geschlossen? Was hat die "sola scriptura"-Forderung mit Luthers merkwürdigen Nachverhandlungen in Worms zu tun? Gehört das alles zur Renaissance und zum Beginn der Neuzeit? Es tritt ein Komplex von Kommunikationsmaßnahmen um Luthers PR-Team und um seine eigenen rhetorischen Interaktionen auf dem Reichstag hervor. Die Rhetorik zeigt sich hier als der große Dynamikfaktor der Geschichte. Religionsgeschichtlich ragt Luthers Weckruf von 1517 als Datum heraus. Säkulargeschichtlich hingegen ist 1521 das entscheidende Jahr eines epochalen Aufbruchs zu neuen politischen Dimensionen. Schlüsselbegriff wird ab jetzt der "Protest". Er beginnt sich zwar erst langsam, aber unwiderruflich, als sozialkommunikative Institution in der westlichen Welt zu etablieren und zum komplementären Faktor gegenüber der Macht zu werden The book addresses the events surrounding three rhetorical events at the Diet of Worms in 1521. For the first time, Luther’s accusation, defense, and condemnation are examined in terms of their rhetorically motivated context. Did Luther truly conclude his speech with the call, "Here I stand, I can do no other"? Is all of this the start of early modernity? And to what extent did Worms mark the launch of "protest" as a new social institution?

    A major goal of the environmental movement is to conserve or improve the natural environment, but evidence showing that environmental mobilization produces positive environmental outcomes is mixed. This paper addresses a fundamental question about the relative impact of pro-environmental mobilization and the scope of an environmental policy regime on the natural environment. Using panel data at the state level from 1990-2007, we explore how environmental protest and environmental policies independently (or jointly) reduce CO2 emissions in U.S. states. We find that the level of emissions in a state declines in states with increases in pro-environmental protest, net of the effects of the range of environmental policies enacted, gasoline taxes, liberal attitudes, reliance on the fossil fuel industry, number of registered lobbyist organizations, average state product, and population size

    How is the protest behavior of citizens in new democracies influenced by their experience of the past? Certain theories of political socialization hold that cohorts reaching political maturity under dictatorship are subject to apathy. Yet, it remains unclear whether mobilization during the transition can counterbalance this effect. This article examines the protest behavior of citizens socialized in Eastern Germany, a region marked by two legacies: a legacy of autocracy and, following the 1989-90 revolution, a legacy of transitional mobilization. Using age-period-cohort models with data from the European Social Survey, the analysis assesses the evolution of gaps in protest across generations and time between East and West Germans. The results demonstrate that participation in demonstrations, petitions, and boycotts is lower for East Germans socialized under communism in comparison with West Germans from the same cohorts. This participation deficit remains stable over time and even increases for certain protest activities.

    In the past few years, the American public has faced many domestic and divisive hardships including, but not limited to, those centered on racial prejudice and police brutality (LeFebvre & Armstrong, 2016). In fact, these two issues are what sparked the NFL national anthem protests (NAPs), in which athletes kneel during the national anthem. After President Trump's tweets to openly condemn the NAPs in 2017, public opinions showed polarized responses. In order to analyze the communication patterns and meanings of NAPs visual Tweets, this study is grounded upon the social identity theory (SIT; Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and adapts Van Zomeren et al.'s (2012) dynamic dual pathway model (DDPM). This study's proposed research framework allows for greater understanding of how social identity, grievances, and coping approaches (emotional route: affective responses; instrumental route: efficacy) factor into image content shared during a polarized protest. In order to understand social media discussions of NAPs' supporters the NFL, this study conducts visual content analysis of relevant Twitter image tweets after Trump's posts aroused heated debates. This investigation attempts to understand how protest supporters used different digital coping methods in response to protest opposition (such as different affective responses or responses that are efficacy-eliciting). This study uses images as the primary data source for Twitter content analysis because they have a different intention than text-based social media messages as images present symbols to users, allowing them to establish references quicker. This study collects image tweets using the most viral hashtag #TakeAKnee via the Twitter Advanced Search function from September 24, 2017 (the peak of web search penetration for NAPs) to October 21, 2017 (when the NAPs web search penetration dropped after the second peak). The code scheme includes 4 codes and 18 sub-codes that has been developed based on relevant theoretic concepts about protests. Emerging new codes can be recognized from recurrent patterns that appear during the data analysis. Along with the researcher, another trained coder analyzed the image tweets, resulting in acceptable intercoder reliability. The findings of this study have shed light on the complex nature of the NFL national anthem protests and the social identity projection for Twitter users who support the NAPs. Specifically, the social identity of minority support was most prevalent while the social identities of constructive patriotism and sports fandoms was minimal, suggesting that although anti-protest mobilizers may be able to increase the volume of online dialogue, they are unable to shift the focus of the protest away from its original purpose. Additionally, reciprocal affective responses (i.e. sympathy and admiration) were expressed more in the image tweets than shared affective responses (i.e. anger and sarcasm), contradicting previous studies on protest emotions and collective action motivators. Practically, this research is significant because as the NAPs could possibly start anew in the 2018 NFL season, addressing the concerns of the citizens (identified through visual analysis of Twitter images) can be beneficial in resolving the primary issues surrounding the protests. Finally, as few studies have used visual tweet analysis to investigate social movements or protests (see Cowart et. al, 2016; Kharroub & Bas, 2016; Wetzstein, 2017), this study contributes to this emerging form of content analysis.

By adopting a fixed effect instrumental variable identification strategy, we find that education reduces voter turnout, more so in municipalities with higher income, lower social capital, which experienced political misconduct in the past and have low institutional quality. Analysis with individual data confirms these results. We discuss several mechanisms to rationalize our findings ranging from the opportunity cost of time to disaffection and civic protest.

Im Gegenteil: Die Befragten berichten vom Verlust ihrer Existenzgrundlagen und gesundheitlichen Schäden sowie von Respektlosigkeit, die sie seitens der Minenbetreiber erfahren. Die Betroffenen protestieren auf vielfältige Weise und fordern Entschädigung durch Kompensationszahlungen, die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und Einkommensmöglichkeiten sowie Investitionen in die lokale Infrastruktur.     Conventional wisdom maintains that the Chinese Communist Party is upheld by performance-based legitimacy. Yet what about procedural legitimacy? Analyzing national survey data on China, this study finds that governance procedures affect the legitimacy of subnational levels of governing, if not necessarily that of the national level. Good governance contributes to trust in local leaders, while corruption not only detracts from trust in local and regional leaders, it increases the public's willingness to protest. This reality was not well-incorporated into the core legitimacy-building approach adopted during the Hu-Wen era. Despite low priority and constrained governance reforms, the main legitimation strategy in the Hu-Wen era remained focused on performance-as growth and equity-even as the public valued procedural legitimacy. While performance legitimacy and traditional legitimacy are also shown to be important phenomena, this study highlights why these are fragile bases for legitimacy, especially considering rising modernization forces and economic slowdown.

Es besteht zu einem großen Teil aus einer von den etablierten Parteien nicht repräsentierten politischen Mitte, die der staatlichen Politik insgesamt misstrauisch gegenübersteht. Dieses Mobilisierungspotential tendiert über Zeit zunehmend nach rechts und es besitzt aufgrund seiner Anfälligkeit für Verschwörungstheorien ein erhebliches Radikalisierungspotenzial. The empirical study gives a first comprehensive overview of the political potential of corona-related protests in Germany. It concludes that corona protests have a considerable and relatively stable mobilization potential among the German population. Based on original survey data, the study shows that this mobilization potential is not only formed by the radical right fringe. It also consists to a significant extent of a political center not represented by established parties, which is generally suspicious of the state and its institutions. Over time, the mobilization potential has increasingly shifted to the right and, due to its susceptibility to conspiracy theories, further radicalization seems possible.
