    "Since August 1969, the Woodstock Music and Art Fair looms large when recounting the history and impact of the baby boom generation and the societal upheavals of the Sixties. Scholars study the sociological, political, musical, and artistic impact of the event and use it as a cultural touchstone when exploring alternative perspectives or seeking clarity. This interdisciplinary annotated bibliography records the details of over 400 English-language resources on the Festival, including books, chapters, articles, websites, transcriptions and videos. Divided into six main subsections―Culture & Society, History, Biography, Music, Film, Arts & Literature―for ease of consultation Woodstock Scholarship sheds light on all facets of a key happening in our collective history. Throughout the 1960s, popular music became increasingly reflective and suggestive of the rising political and social consciousness of the youth culture. Examples can be seen in the development of the protest song genre within the folk music boom of the early Sixties and the marriage of lifestyle to music first reflected by The Beatles with fashion, followed by psychedelic music with the emerging drug culture. Woodstock was where these themes coalesced, thus becoming the defining and last great moment of the 1960s. However, Woodstock also represented an abundant amount of experiences and ideas and moments. Thus, when exploring the complicated accounts and numerous facets of America during the turbulent Sixties one discovers scholarship on the key subjects, such as the Vietnam War or the Civil Rights Movement, often considering and debating the importance, relevance, and epic nature of Woodstock. Multiple narratives emerge: a radical engagement of the hippie movement, an overt commercial exploitation of youth culture, a political statement.     In this wide-ranging study of Japanese cultural expression, Alan Tansman reveals how a particular, often seemingly innocent aesthetic sensibility—present in novels, essays, popular songs, film, and political writings—helped create an "aesthetic of fascism" in the years leading up to World War II. Evoking beautiful moments of violence, both real and imagined, these works did not lead to fascism in any instrumental sense. Yet, Tansman suggests, they expressed and inspired spiritual longings quenchable only through acts in the real world. Tansman traces this lineage of aesthetic fascism from its beginnings in the 1920s through its flowering in the 1930s to its afterlife in postwar Japan

This book’s chapters are structured into six key areas: historically informed performance; ethnomusicological perspectives; particular musical works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" war histories; operatic works that works that "tell," "enact," or "perform" power or enlightenment; musical works that deploy the body and a broad range of senses to convey histories; and histories involving popular music and performance. Diverse lines of evidence and manifold methodologies are represented here, ranging from traditional historical archival research to interviewing, performing, and composing. The modes of analyzing music and its associated texts represented here are as various as the kinds of evidence explored, including, for example, reading historical accounts against other contextual backdrops, and reading "between the lines" to access other voices than those provided by mainstream interpretation or traditional musicology

Diese Studie erforscht die transformativen Einflüsse von Kurzvideos auf die musikalische Botschaft, basierend auf dem Konzept der digitalen Mediamorphose. Im Fokus steht die Aneignung populärer Musik in musikzentrierten Kurzvideos und deren Auswirkungen auf die Kontextualisierung der musikalischen Botschaft. Die Videoanalyse präsentiert Erkenntnisse zum intermedialen Zusammenspiel von Bild, Text und Ton. Userzentrierte Interviews decken auf, wie sich User populäre Musik durch Kurzvideos aneignen. Drei Aneignungsmodi der Rezeption sowie zwei der Produktion werden skizziert. Music appropriation in digital media culture is currently characterised by social media short videos, especially TikToks and Instagram Reels. This study explores the transformative influences of short videos on the musical message, based on the concept of digital mediamorphosis. The focus is on the appropriation of popular music in music-centric short videos and their impact on the contextualisation of the musical message. The video analysis presents findings on the intermedial interplay of image, text and sound. User-centred interviews reveal how users appropriate popular music through short videos. Three modes of appropriation of reception and two of production are outlined.

    Die Musikaneignung wird gegenwärtig in der digitalen Medienkultur von Social Media-Kurzvideos geprägt, insbesondere durch TikToks und Instagram Reels. Diese Studie erforscht die transformativen Einflüsse von Kurzvideos auf die musikalische Botschaft, basierend auf dem Konzept der digitalen Mediamorphose. Im Fokus steht die Aneignung populärer Musik in musikzentrierten Kurzvideos und deren Auswirkungen auf die Kontextualisierung der musikalischen Botschaft. Die Videoanalyse präsentiert Erkenntnisse zum intermedialen Zusammenspiel von Bild, Text und Ton. Userzentrierte Interviews decken auf, wie sich User populäre Musik durch Kurzvideos aneignen. Drei Aneignungsmodi der Rezeption sowie zwei der Produktion werden skizziert. Music appropriation in digital media culture is currently characterised by social media short videos, especially TikToks and Instagram Reels. This study explores the transformative influences of short videos on the musical message, based on the concept of digital mediamorphosis. The focus is on the appropriation of popular music in music-centric short videos and their impact on the contextualisation of the musical message. The video analysis presents findings on the intermedial interplay of image, text and sound. User-centred interviews reveal how users appropriate popular music through short videos. Three modes of appropriation of reception and two of production are outlined.

    Two albums of original pop songs were produced to accompany The Hunger Games (2012) and Catching Fire's (2013) film adaptations. Over half of the contributing musicians employed religious vocabulary and motifs foreign to their source material. Possible influences discussed include religious paradigms associated with the Appalachian-inspired music of the first album, the apocalyptic impulse of contemporary dystopia, and the evolving role of religious imagery within postmodern pluralism. Ultimately, it is argued that despite the areligious content of The Hunger Games, the series' literary genre and cultural context facilitate the blending of the sacred and secular in ways unexpected but not incongruous.

    In Proust’s Songbook, Jennifer Rushworth analyzes and theorizes the presence and role of songs in Marcel Proust’s novel À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time). Instead of focusing on instrumental music and large-scale forms such as symphonies and opera, as is common in Proust musical studies, Rushworth argues for the centrality of songs and lyrics in Proust’s opus. Her work analyzes the ways in which the author inserted songs at key turning points in his novel and how he drew inspiration from contemporary composers and theorists of song. Rushworth presents detailed readings of five moments of song in À la recherche du temps perdu, highlighting the songs’ significance by paying close attention to their lyrics, music, composers, and histories.Rushworth interprets these episodes through theoretical reflections on song and voice, drawing particularly from the works of Reynaldo Hahn and Roland Barthes. She argues that songs in Proust’s novel are connected and resonate with one another across the different volumes yet also shows how song for Proust is a solo, amateur, and intimate affair. In addition, she points to Proust’s juxtapositions of songs with meditations on the notion of “mauvaise musique” (bad music) to demonstrate the existence of a blurred boundary between songs that are popular and songs that are art.According to Rushworth, a song for Proust has a special relation to repetition and memory due to its typical brevity and that song itself becomes a mode of resistance in À la Recherche—especially on the part of characters in the face of family and familial expectations. She also defines the songs in Proust’s novel as songs of farewell—noting that to sing farewell is a means to resist the very parting that is being expressed—and demonstrates how songs, in formal terms, resist the forward impetus of narrative
