    "The collection, first one ever on Aino Kallas in English, highlights her significance to the artistic and intellectual horizons of modernity of Finland and Estonia as well as those of Scandinavia and Europe. In the 1920s and 30s, Aino Kallas became an internationally renowned author and a selection of her work was translated into English. For her, participating in the immediate cultural debates in Estonia and Finland was a priority, yet her whole oeuvre is a negotiation between her more immediate contexts and the leading conceptual frameworks of aesthetics, geniality, knowledge, subjectivity, race, sexuality, nature, etc., circling in Europe at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Containing articles focusing on the question of female voice and echoes of feminist ecological thought in her fiction, a contrapuntal reading of her fiction and that of Isak Dinesen, her unknown manuscript “Bathseba”, the implications of existentialist thought for her work, Kallas’ engagement in her cultural criticism and life writings with decadent modernism, issues of race and heredity, subjectivity and borders, travel, ageing, her interpretation of Goethe, and the iconography of Kallas, the collection features the work of today’s leading Aino Kallas scholars in Finland and in Estonia.     "In this study, I examine the life narrative of a female factory labourer, Elsa Koskinen (née Kiikkala, born in 1927). I analyze her account of her experiences related to work, class and gender because I seek to gain a better understanding of how changes in these aspects of life influenced the ways in which she saw her own worth at the time of the interviews and how she constructed her subjectivity. Elsa’s life touches upon many of the core aspects of 20th-century social change: changes in women’s roles, the entrance of middle- class women into working life, women’s increasing participation in the public sphere, feminist movements, upward social mobility, the expansion of the middle class, the growth of welfare and the appearance of new technologies. What kind of trajectory did Elsa take in her life? What are the key narratives of her life? How does her narrative negotiate the shifting cultural ideals of the 20th century? A life story, a retrospective evaluation of a life lived, is one means of constructing continuity and dealing with the changes that have affected one’s life, identity and subjectivity. In narrating one’s life, the narrator produces many different versions of her/him self in relation to other people and to the world. These dialogic selves and their relations to others may manifest internal contradictions. Contradictions may also occur in relation to other narratives and normative discourses. Both of these levels, subjective meaning making and the negotiation of social ideals and collective norms, are embedded in life narratives.

    My interest in this study is in the ways in which gender and class intersect with paid labour in the life of an ordinary female factory worker. I approach gender, class and work from both an experiential and a relational perspective, considering the power of social relationships and subject formations that shape individual life at the micro-level. In her narratives Elsa discusses ambivalence related to gendered ideals, social class, and especially the phenomenon of social climbing as well as technological advance.

    I approach Elsa’s life and narratives ethnographically. The research material was acquired in a long-standing interview process and the analysis is based on reflexivity of the dialogic knowledge production and contextualization of Elsa’s experiences. In other words I analyze Elsa’s narratives in their situational but also socio-cultural and historical contexts. Specific episodes in one’s life and other significant events constitute smaller narrative entities, which I call micro-narratives. The analysis of micro-narratives, key dialogues and cultural ideals embedded in the interview dialogues offers perspectives on experiences of social change and the narrator’s sense of self"

Krachkovsky (1883–1951) is one of the most important Oriental scholars of the 20th century and is considered the founder of modern Arabic studies in Russia. The German edition of his biography by Anna A. Dolinina (1923–2017) presents his eventful life and exciting academic career to the German-speaking readership. Numerous documents from the archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including Kračkovskij's letters and diaries, form the basis of the study alongside the personal memories of the biographer. The book sheds light on the historical, political, and intellectual history of the development of Arabic studies in Russia in the first half of the 20th century.

Der Band richtet sich vor allem an Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler:innen. Horst Rien, geb. 1948, hat als Romanist an den Universitäten Göttingen und Hamburg unterrichtet. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf der spanischen und französischen Literatur des 18. und 20. Jahrhunderts. By applying the theoretical concepts of ‘discourse’ and ‘mental schema’ to textual analysis, the author presents an innovative analysis of important Spanish novels and essays from the recent past, focusing on the relationship between literary text and collective knowledge. Considering aspects such as power, memory, modernisation, etc., he brings to light contextual references between literary and non-literary contemporary texts and consequent correlations between literary and social developments. This volume is aimed primarily at literary and cultural scholars. Horst Rien, born in 1948, is a Romance scholar who has taught at the universities of Göttingen and Hamburg. His research focuses on Spanish and French literature from the 18th and 20th centuries.

    This study examines the transformation that took place in worldly lied culture in German around 1600. Ornate poetry in the vernacular and solo lieder emerged in the sixteenth century and were predominantly developed using Italian elements. Their reception in the middle classes led to the dissemination and valorization of lied culture, and to its codification in literary and music theory Weitreichende Veränderungen in Dichtung und Musik zeichnen sich um 1600 ab. Lyrik und Lied lassen sich kaum trennen, da die Lyrik dieser Zeit meist sangbar ist und entscheidend durch das weltliche Lied beeinflusst wird. Der maßgebliche Beitrag, den das Lied zum ästhetischen Wandel, zur Modernisierung und Europäisierung der deutschsprachigen Lyrik leistet, wird anhand von etwa 5200 Liedern in 340 Lieddrucken zwischen 1567 und 1642 herausgearbeitet. Vor dem Hintergrund dieses Quellenkorpus werden in der interdisziplinären Studie Einzellieder und Liedsammlungen aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum musik- und literaturwissenschaftlich analysiert. Neben sozial- und gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Aspekten kommen Dimensionen der Novität ebenso zur Sprache wie das Verhältnis von Theorie, Poetik und Praxis, Kulturtransferprozesse sowie Fragen nach Kontinuitäten und Dynamiken literarischer und musikalischer Phänomene. Die Fallstudien sowie theoretische und poetische Äußerungen zum Lied erweisen, wie sich zwei Konzeptionen des Liedes profilieren: In der Verselbstständigung werden beide Liedkonzepte in Literatur und Musik aufgewertet. So trägt das weltliche deutschsprachige Lied zur Modernisierung und Europäisierung der deutschen Literatur bei

    Um die Digitalisierung in Deutschland voranzutreiben, werden auf allen Verwaltungsebenen verstärkt Digitalisierungsstrategien entwickelt. Die erfolgreiche Umsetzung dieser Strategien wird jedoch vor allem auf kommunaler Ebene durch vielfältige strukturelle, personelle und technologische Hürden erschwert. Als ein zent-raler Erfolgsfaktor für die Strategieumsetzung werden in der Literatur Dynamic Capabilities benannt, die sich als prozessual organisierte Bündel von Metaroutinen definieren lassen. Die Empirie verdeutlicht, dass Dynamic Capabilities weder emergent herausgebildet noch extern erworben werden können, sondern aktiv durch eine Organisation zu entwickeln sind. Wie und ob Dynamic Capabilities in der öffentlichen Verwaltung entwickelt werden, ist bislang weitestgehend unerforscht geblieben. The book traces Prus' evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a "non-existent" partitioned Poland.     Mit Hilfe einer textanalytischen Anwendung der theoretischen Konzepte „Diskurs“ und „mentales Schema“ legt der Autor eine innovative Analyse wichtiger spanischer Romane und Essays der jüngeren Vergangenheit vor, die sich auf die Beziehung zwischen literarischem Text und kollektivem Wissen konzentriert. Unter Gesichtspunkten wie Macht, Erinnerung, Modernisierung etc. werden kontextuelle Bezüge zwischen literarischen und nicht-literarischen, zeitgenössischen Texten und damit Korrelationen zwischen literarischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen sichtbar gemacht. Der Band richtet sich vor allem an Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler:innen. Horst Rien, geb. 1948, hat als Romanist an den Universitäten Göttingen und Hamburg unterrichtet. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf der spanischen und französischen Literatur des 18. und 20. Jahrhunderts By applying the theoretical concepts of ‘discourse’ and ‘mental schema’ to textual analysis, the author presents an innovative analysis of important Spanish novels and essays from the recent past, focusing on the relationship between literary text and collective knowledge. Considering aspects such as power, memory, modernisation, etc., he brings to light contextual references between literary and non-literary contemporary texts and consequent correlations between literary and social developments. This volume is aimed primarily at literary and cultural scholars. Horst Rien, born in 1948, is a Romance scholar who has taught at the universities of Göttingen and Hamburg. His research focuses on Spanish and French literature from the 18th and 20th centuries

    This study examines the transformation that took place in worldly lied culture in German around 1600. Ornate poetry in the vernacular and solo lieder emerged in the sixteenth century and were predominantly developed using Italian elements. Their reception in the middle classes led to the dissemination and valorization of lied culture, and to its codification in literary and music theory Weitreichende Veränderungen in Dichtung und Musik zeichnen sich um 1600 ab. Lyrik und Lied lassen sich kaum trennen, da die Lyrik dieser Zeit meist sangbar ist und entscheidend durch das weltliche Lied beeinflusst wird. Der maßgebliche Beitrag, den das Lied zum ästhetischen Wandel, zur Modernisierung und Europäisierung der deutschsprachigen Lyrik leistet, wird anhand von etwa 5200 Liedern in 340 Lieddrucken zwischen 1567 und 1642 herausgearbeitet. Vor dem Hintergrund dieses Quellenkorpus werden in der interdisziplinären Studie Einzellieder und Liedsammlungen aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum musik- und literaturwissenschaftlich analysiert. Neben sozial- und gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Aspekten kommen Dimensionen der Novität ebenso zur Sprache wie das Verhältnis von Theorie, Poetik und Praxis, Kulturtransferprozesse sowie Fragen nach Kontinuitäten und Dynamiken literarischer und musikalischer Phänomene. Die Fallstudien sowie theoretische und poetische Äußerungen zum Lied erweisen, wie sich zwei Konzeptionen des Liedes profilieren: In der Verselbstständigung werden beide Liedkonzepte in Literatur und Musik aufgewertet. So trägt das weltliche deutschsprachige Lied zur Modernisierung und Europäisierung der deutschen Literatur bei

    Bolesław Prus and the Jews shows the complexity of the so-called “Jewish question” in nineteenth-century Congress Poland and especially its significance in Prus’ social concept reflected in his extensive body of journalistic work, fiction, and treatises. The book traces Prus’ evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a “non-existent” partitioned Poland. The portrait of Prus that emerges is surprisingly ambivalent.

    This study examines the transformation that took place in worldly lied culture in German around 1600. Ornate poetry in the vernacular and solo lieder emerged in the sixteenth century and were predominantly developed using Italian elements. Their reception in the middle classes led to the dissemination and valorization of lied culture, and to its codification in literary and music theory.

Prus on the Modern Aspects of the Jewish Question -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Index Bolesław Prus and the Jews shows the complexity of the so-called "Jewish question" in nineteenth-century Congress Poland and especially its significance in Prus' social concept reflected in his extensive body of journalistic work, fiction, and treatises. The book traces Prus' evolving worldview toward Jews, from his support of the Assimilation Program in his early years to his eventual support of Zionism. These contrasting ideas show us the complexity of the discourse on Jewish issues from the individual perspective of a significant writer of the time, as well as the dynamics of the Jewish modernization process in a "non-existent" partitioned Poland. The portrait of Prus that emerges is surprisingly ambivalent

    Conventional wisdom maintains that the Chinese Communist Party is upheld by performance-based legitimacy. Yet what about procedural legitimacy? Analyzing national survey data on China, this study finds that governance procedures affect the legitimacy of subnational levels of governing, if not necessarily that of the national level. Good governance contributes to trust in local leaders, while corruption not only detracts from trust in local and regional leaders, it increases the public's willingness to protest. This reality was not well-incorporated into the core legitimacy-building approach adopted during the Hu-Wen era. Despite low priority and constrained governance reforms, the main legitimation strategy in the Hu-Wen era remained focused on performance-as growth and equity-even as the public valued procedural legitimacy. While performance legitimacy and traditional legitimacy are also shown to be important phenomena, this study highlights why these are fragile bases for legitimacy, especially considering rising modernization forces and economic slowdown.

Krachkovsky (1883–1951) is one of the most important Oriental scholars of the 20th century and is considered the founder of modern Arabic studies in Russia. The German edition of his biography by Anna A. Dolinina (1923–2017) presents his eventful life and exciting academic career to the German-speaking readership. Numerous documents from the archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including Kračkovskij's letters and diaries, form the basis of the study alongside the personal memories of the biographer. The book sheds light on the historical, political, and intellectual history of the development of Arabic studies in Russia in the first half of the 20th century.

    Um die Digitalisierung in Deutschland voranzutreiben, werden auf allen Verwaltungsebenen verstärkt Digitalisierungsstrategien entwickelt. Die erfolgreiche Umsetzung dieser Strategien wird jedoch vor allem auf kommunaler Ebene durch vielfältige strukturelle, personelle und technologische Hürden erschwert. Als ein zent-raler Erfolgsfaktor für die Strategieumsetzung werden in der Literatur Dynamic Capabilities benannt, die sich als prozessual organisierte Bündel von Metaroutinen definieren lassen. Die Empirie verdeutlicht, dass Dynamic Capabilities weder emergent herausgebildet noch extern erworben werden können, sondern aktiv durch eine Organisation zu entwickeln sind. Wie und ob Dynamic Capabilities in der öffentlichen Verwaltung entwickelt werden, ist bislang weitestgehend unerforscht geblieben.
