Originating in northern England around the year 1300, the poem was frequently copied in the north before appearing in a southern version in substantially altered form. This five-part collaborative edition presents the Arundel version of the poem with variants from three others.     This is a community translation of the earliest English epic poem. Beowulf tells the story of a mythical hero in northern Europe in, perhaps, the sixth century. Alongside his story, multiple other shorter narratives are told and many other voices are heard, making it a rich and varied account of the poet's views of heroism, conflict, loyalty and the human condition. The poem is widely taught in schools and universities, and has been adapted, modernized, and translated dozens of times, but this is the first large-scale polyvocal translation. Readers will encounter the voices of over two-hundred individuals, woven together into a reading experience that is at once productively dissonant, yet strangely coherent in its extreme variation. We hope that it turns the common question "Why do we need yet another translation?" on its head, asking instead, "How can we hear from more translators?," and "How can previously unheard, or marginalised voices, find space, like this, in the world of Old English Studies?" With this in mind we invite a new generation of readers to try their own hand at translating Beowulf in the workbook space provided opposite this community translation. It is often through the effort of translating that we see the reality of the original.

    Neidhart ist neben Walther von der Vogelweide der bedeutendste und erfolgreichste Minnesänger der mittelhochdeutschen Literatur. Die Überlieferung des lyrischen Werks, das in ‚Sommer-‘ und ‚Winterlieder‘ unterteilt wird, ist reich. Sie umfasst ca. 140 Lieder, z. T. mit Melodien. Neidharts Schaffenszeit wird auf das erste Drittel des 13. Jahrhunderts datiert. Das Besondere seines Œuvres liegt in der parodierenden Übertragung des höfischen Minnesang-Konzepts auf die bäuerliche Welt: Nicht mehr Burg und Kemenate sind der Schauplatz, sondern der Dorfanger. In den ‚Sommerliedern‘ erscheint das Sprecher-Ich als bei Tanz und Spiel von den Bauernmädchen begehrter Hofmann, in den ‚Winterliedern‘ hingegen als vergeblich um deren Gunst werbender, gegen die bäurischen Nebenbuhler unterliegender Minneritter. Neidharts Motiven und Figuren war eine reiche Wirkung beschieden, u. a. in der späteren Schwankliteratur. Diese an der Universität Salzburg erstellte Neuedition seines Werkes ist eine philologische Sensation: Nach jahrzehntelanger Aufarbeitung der gesamten Überlieferung, die von der Forschung in zahlreiche, auf komplizierte Weise miteinander in Beziehung stehende Handschriftenblöcke unterteilt wird, bietet sie gut 150 Jahre nach der ersten Ausgabe durch Moriz Haupt (1858) den Text aller unter Neidharts Namen überlieferten Lieder in kritischer Edition mitsamt den Melodien. Erstmals sind alle bekannten Textzeugen in Pergament- und Papierhandschriften sowie in Drucken berücksichtigt, also auch die sog. ‚Pseudo-Neidharte‘. Divergierende Textfassungen werden im Paralleldruck präsentiert. Durch Apparate und Kommentare sowie eine Bibliographie und Diskographie wird die gesamte Überlieferungs- und Editionsgeschichte der Lieder umfassend erschlossen. Die Ausgabe ist ein Meilenstein der Germanistischen Mediävistik und künftig der Ausgangspunkt jeder Neidhart-Forschung.

    Saint Augustine famously “wept for Dido, who killed herself by the sword,” and many later medieval schoolboys were taught to respond in similarly emotional ways to the pain of female characters in Virgil’s Aeneid and other classical texts. In Weeping for Dido, Marjorie Curry Woods takes readers into the medieval classroom, where boys identified with Dido, where teachers turned an unfinished classical poem into a bildungsroman about young Achilles, and where students not only studied but performed classical works. Woods opens the classroom door by examining teachers’ notes and marginal commentary in manuscripts of the Aeneid and two short verse narratives: the Achilleid of Statius and the Ilias latina, a Latin epitome of Homer’s Iliad. She focuses on interlinear glosses—individual words and short phrases written above lines of text that elucidate grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, but that also indicate how students engaged with the feelings and motivations of characters. Interlinear and marginal glosses, which were the foundation of the medieval classroom study of classical literature, reveal that in learning the Aeneid, boys studied and empathized with the feelings of female characters; that the unfinished Achilleid was restructured into a complete narrative showing young Achilles mirroring his mentors, including his mother, Thetis; and that the Ilias latina offered boys a condensed version of the Iliad focusing on the deaths of young men. Manuscript evidence even indicates how specific passages could be performed.     This is a community translation of the earliest English epic poem. Beowulf tells the story of a mythical hero in northern Europe in, perhaps, the sixth century. Alongside his story, multiple other shorter narratives are told and many other voices are heard, making it a rich and varied account of the poet's views of heroism, conflict, loyalty and the human condition. The poem is widely taught in schools and universities, and has been adapted, modernized, and translated dozens of times, but this is the first large-scale polyvocal translation. Readers will encounter the voices of over two-hundred individuals, woven together into a reading experience that is at once productively dissonant, yet strangely coherent in its extreme variation. We hope that it turns the common question "Why do we need yet another translation?" on its head, asking instead, "How can we hear from more translators?," and "How can previously unheard, or marginalised voices, find space, like this, in the world of Old English Studies?" With this in mind we invite a new generation of readers to try their own hand at translating Beowulf in the workbook space provided opposite this community translation. It is often through the effort of translating that we see the reality of the original.

    Neidhart ist neben Walther von der Vogelweide der bedeutendste und erfolgreichste Minnesänger der mittelhochdeutschen Literatur. Die Überlieferung des lyrischen Werks, das in ‚Sommer-‘ und ‚Winterlieder‘ unterteilt wird, ist reich. Sie umfasst ca. 140 Lieder, z. T. mit Melodien. Neidharts Schaffenszeit wird auf das erste Drittel des 13. Jahrhunderts datiert. Das Besondere seines Œuvres liegt in der parodierenden Übertragung des höfischen Minnesang-Konzepts auf die bäuerliche Welt: Nicht mehr Burg und Kemenate sind der Schauplatz, sondern der Dorfanger. In den ‚Sommerliedern‘ erscheint das Sprecher-Ich als bei Tanz und Spiel von den Bauernmädchen begehrter Hofmann, in den ‚Winterliedern‘ hingegen als vergeblich um deren Gunst werbender, gegen die bäurischen Nebenbuhler unterliegender Minneritter. Neidharts Motiven und Figuren war eine reiche Wirkung beschieden, u. a. in der späteren Schwankliteratur. Diese an der Universität Salzburg erstellte Neuedition seines Werkes ist eine philologische Sensation: Nach jahrzehntelanger Aufarbeitung der gesamten Überlieferung, die von der Forschung in zahlreiche, auf komplizierte Weise miteinander in Beziehung stehende Handschriftenblöcke unterteilt wird, bietet sie gut 150 Jahre nach der ersten Ausgabe durch Moriz Haupt (1858) den Text aller unter Neidharts Namen überlieferten Lieder in kritischer Edition mitsamt den Melodien. Erstmals sind alle bekannten Textzeugen in Pergament- und Papierhandschriften sowie in Drucken berücksichtigt, also auch die sog. ‚Pseudo-Neidharte‘. Divergierende Textfassungen werden im Paralleldruck präsentiert. Durch Apparate und Kommentare sowie eine Bibliographie und Diskographie wird die gesamte Überlieferungs- und Editionsgeschichte der Lieder umfassend erschlossen. Die Ausgabe ist ein Meilenstein der Germanistischen Mediävistik und künftig der Ausgangspunkt jeder Neidhart-Forschung

    Saint Augustine famously “wept for Dido, who killed herself by the sword,” and many later medieval schoolboys were taught to respond in similarly emotional ways to the pain of female characters in Virgil’s Aeneid and other classical texts. In Weeping for Dido, Marjorie Curry Woods takes readers into the medieval classroom, where boys identified with Dido, where teachers turned an unfinished classical poem into a bildungsroman about young Achilles, and where students not only studied but performed classical works. Woods opens the classroom door by examining teachers’ notes and marginal commentary in manuscripts of the Aeneid and two short verse narratives: the Achilleid of Statius and the Ilias latina, a Latin epitome of Homer’s Iliad. She focuses on interlinear glosses—individual words and short phrases written above lines of text that elucidate grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, but that also indicate how students engaged with the feelings and motivations of characters. Interlinear and marginal glosses, which were the foundation of the medieval classroom study of classical literature, reveal that in learning the Aeneid, boys studied and empathized with the feelings of female characters; that the unfinished Achilleid was restructured into a complete narrative showing young Achilles mirroring his mentors, including his mother, Thetis; and that the Ilias latina offered boys a condensed version of the Iliad focusing on the deaths of young men. Manuscript evidence even indicates how specific passages could be performed.     The Rime petrose, Dante's powerful lyrics about a woman as beautiful and as hard as a precious stone, are generally acknowledged to be an important moment in his stylistic development. In this full-length investigation of the poetics of the petrose and of their relation to TheDivine Comedy, Robert M. Durling and Ronald L. Martinez uncover new material, especially from medieval science (astrology and mineralogy), philosophy, and theology. The authors argue that the Rime petrose represent a major turning point in Dante's conception of a ";microcosmic poetics"; that became the fundamental mode of the Commedia. They demonstrate how Dante here attempts his first full account of his relation to the universe as a whole. This work offers many insights into the intrinsic significance of these remarkable poems and their place in Dante's development. Especially far-reaching are the implications for the interpretation of TheDivine Comedy.Time and the Crystal will interest not only students of Dante but also intellectual historians, historians of science, students of poetics and poetic theory, and all those interested in medieval literature.
