    Many of today's Dutch writers were children during World War II. Even today, the traumatic childhood experience of enemy occupation is still central to the work of many of them. This interest cuts across the traditional boundaries between fiction, autobiography and the literature of trauma and recovery. A Family Occupation is the first English-language introduction to Dutch-language texts written by and about the 'Children of the War' and their cultural context. Their themes and literary conventions throw an interesting light on the Dutch approach to issues such as guilt and innocence, memory and narrative, national identity, child abuse and victimhood. Veel hedendaagse Nederlandse schrijvers waren kind tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De traumatische ervaring van de vijandelijke bezetting staat centraal in het werk van velen van hen. Deze erfenis snijdt dwars door de traditionele grenzen tussen fictie, autobiografie en de literatuur van trauma en herstel. A Family Occupation is de eerste Engelstalige inleiding tot de Nederlandstalige teksten geschreven door en over de 'Kinderen van de Oorlog' en hun culturele context.     Buchenwald survivors Ilona and Henia Karmel were seventeen and twenty years old when they entered the Nazi labor camps from the Kraków ghetto. These remarkable poems were written during that time. The sisters wrote the poems on worksheets stolen from the factories where they worked by day and hid them in their clothing. During what she thought were the last days of her life, Henia entrusted the poems to a cousin who happened to pass her in the forced march at the end of the war. The cousin gave them to Henia's husband in Kraków, who would not locate and reunite with his wife for another six months. This is the first English publication of these extraordinary poems. Fanny Howe's deft adaptations preserve their freshness and innocence while making them entirely compelling. They are presented with a biographical introduction that conveys the powerful story of the sisters' survival from capture to freedom in 1946

    Modernism valorizes the marginal, the exile, the "other"—yet we tend to use writing from the most commonly read European languages (English, French, German) as examples of this marginality. Chana Kronfeld counters these dominant models of marginality by looking instead at modernist poetry written in two decentered languages, Hebrew and Yiddish. What results is a bold new model of literary dynamics, one less tied to canonical norms, less limited geographically, and less in danger of universalizing the experience of minority writers. Kronfeld examines the interpenetrations of modernist groupings through examples of Hebrew and Yiddish poetry in Europe, the U.S., and Israel. Her discussions of Amichai, Fogel, Raab, Halpern, Markish, Hofshteyn, and Sutskever will be welcomed by students of modernism in general and Hebrew and Yiddish literatures in particular

    Blood for Thought delves into a relatively unexplored area of rabbinic literature: the vast corpus of laws, regulations, and instructions pertaining to sacrificial rituals. Mira Balberg traces and analyzes the ways in which the early rabbis interpreted and conceived of biblical sacrifices, reinventing them as a site through which to negotiate intellectual, cultural, and religious trends and practices in their surrounding world. Rather than viewing the rabbinic project as an attempt to generate a nonsacrificial version of Judaism, she argues that the rabbis developed a new sacrificial Jewish tradition altogether, consisting of not merely substitutes to sacrifice but elaborate practical manuals that redefined the processes themselves, radically transforming the meanings of sacrifice, its efficacy, and its value

Ce recueil n’est pas un jugement de l’œuvre, ni une interrogation sur sa recevabilité, pas plus qu’une assertion sur les limites de sa légitimité en tant que roman ou une justification, mais ce recueil est novateur puisque le premier à se concentrer sur le texte des Bienveillantes.Le présent recueil offre un riche éventail d’angles d’approches. Ainsi les analyses ont-elles accentué les personnages qu’ils soient historiques ou fictifs. Mais aussi, les aspects formels, comme la vision du narrateur, le style, la composition, l’esthétique et les influences littéraires. Et encore, les thèmes tels le parricide, l’homosexualité, l’antisémitisme et la Shoah. L’idéologie impliquée se devait d’être interrogée également. Un autre thème crucial du roman est la question qu’il pose entre le Bien et le Mal et sa banalisation.
