The political, academic and environmental contexts surrounding this film since its release prove with more and more urgency the need to read and listen to J. Hillis Miller, and would require revisiting everything that has been said and seen. Together with the film transcript and an interview with Miller conducted by Taryn Devereux, the essays in this volume have been gathered from several international events devoted to Miller's works. With essays by Henry Sussman, Sarah Dillon, Charlie Gere, Nicholas Royle, Éamonn Dunne and Michael O’Rourke, Dragan Kujundžić, Julian Wolfreys and J. Hillis Miller, The First Sail in itself thus forms a vast network of references, operating as an installation and network of emerging projects.

    "Pleasure," Jennifer Moxley writes in her introduction to this volume, "is the word that first comes to mind at the mention of Nicole Brossard's poetry." This volume provides English-language readers with an overview of the life and work of Nicole Brossard, poet, novelist, and essayist, who is widely recognized in her native Québec and throughout the French-speaking world as one of the greatest writers of her generation. Brossard's poetry is rooted in her investigations of language, her abiding commitment to a feminist consciousness, and her capacity for renewing meaning as a virtual space of desire. The reader enters a poetic world in which the aesthetic is joined with the political, and the meaning of both is enriched in the process. The selections in this volume include translations of some of Brossard's best-known works-Lovhers, Ultra Sounds, Museum of Bone and Water, Notebook of Roses and Civilization-along with short prose works, an interview with Brossard, and a bibliography of works in French and English, and constitute the most substantial English-language sampling published to date of one of Canada's greatest living poets

    Was macht ein Leben in Armut aus? Das Buch beantwortet diese Frage anhand qualitativer Interviews, durch die deutlich wird, dass sich hinter dem Sammelbegriff der Armut eine ganze Lebenswelt verbirgt. Diese dreht sich wesentlich um das basale und kurzfristige ,Über-die-Runden-Kommen'. Außerdem stehen Gefühle der Kränkung und der Scham im Zentrum. Großbritannien als Untersuchungsraum gilt hierbei als Prototyp eines sogenannten neoliberalen Wohlfahrtsstaats, in dem Armut zur Abwertung des sozialen Status führt. Das wird anhand der Erfahrungsdimensionen Zeit, Raum und Sozialität ausdifferenziert. Soziale Arbeit hilft den Betroffenen, den Devaluierungen zu begegnen. The book examines poverty on the basis of qualitative interviews and makes clear that the term conceals an entire lifeworld. Great Britain as the area of study is seen as the prototype of a 'neoliberal' welfare state in which poverty leads to the devaluation of social status. This is differentiated on the basis of the experiential dimensions of time, space and sociality. Social work helps those affected to counter the devaluations

    Trotz der zentralen Bedeutung von Versuchspersonen für die klinische Forschung bleiben diese für die späteren KonsumentInnen, etwa von Kopfschmerztabletten, Antidepressiva oder von Tumortherapien, häufig unsichtbar. Auch in den Sozialwissenschaften finden sich bis heute nur einige wenige konzeptuelle Beiträge zu dieser Figur. Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich anhand des empirischen Beispiels der Psoriasis-Forschung in Deutschland der Frage, wer oder was heute auf dem Spiel steht, wenn Menschen zu Versuchspersonen in der biomedizinischen Forschung werden. Auf der Grundlage qualitativer Interviews mit PatientInnen und ForscherInnen lässt sich im Studien-Setting eine Gleichzeitigkeit der Abwesenheit von Beziehungen zwischen PatientInnen einerseits und der Anwesenheit von Infrastrukturen der Sorge sowie intensiver Beziehungsarbeit andererseits herausarbeiten. Geteilte Care-Arbeit gerät dabei zur notwendigen Bedingung für die Hervorbringung generalisierbaren Wissens. Ein der feministischen Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung entlehnter Begriff von Care und Care-Arbeit dient vor dem Hintergrund dieser Erkenntnisse als theoretische Klammer, die es erlaubt, die Vielgestaltigkeit der Figur Versuchsperson sichtbar zu machen.

Yet, the extent to which interview questions are shared in advance with participants is often unclear, although this methodological decision can substantially shape responses and subsequent reflections. Some advantages of sharing interview questions in advance include enhanced participant engagement and reflexivity, reduced interview anxiety, and more thoughtful responses. Conversely, the practice may engender risks such as participant bias, and predetermined answers. This reflective piece addresses this underexplored aspect by first discussing methodological considerations of such a practice, including a brief review of existing practices in research on language teacher ideologies and beliefs. Second, it considers ethical dimensions entailed in such a practice. Additionally, this paper explores how six English teachers in Norway experienced having access to all interview questions in advance to prepare for interviews centred around their individual teaching beliefs about multilingualism and multilingual practices. The paper concludes by suggesting that sharing interview questions in advance can benefit both participants and enhance the quality of research. Das Interview, ein häufig verwendetes Forschungsinstrument in der angewandten Linguistik, ermöglicht Forschenden, die Sprachideologien und Überzeugungen der Teilnehmenden zu erforschen. Dennoch ist oft unklar, inwieweit Interviewfragen im Voraus mit den Teilnehmenden geteilt werden, obwohl diese methodische Entscheidung die Antworten und die nachfolgenden Reflexionen erheblich beeinflussen kann. Einige Vorteile der vorherigen Mitteilung von Interviewfragen umfassen eine besser informierte Beteiligung und Reflexivität der Teilnehmenden, eine reduzierte Interviewangst und durchdachtere Antworten. Andererseits können damit Risiken wie eine Antwortverzerrung und vorher festgelegte Antworten einhergehen. Dieser Beitrag behandelt diesen wenig erforschten Aspekt, indem wir zunächst methodologische Überlegungen zu einer solchen Praxis diskutieren, einschließlich einer kurzen Analyse der bestehenden berichteten Praktiken in der Forschung über Sprachlehrideologien und -überzeugungen. Zweitens erörtern wir die Vor- und Nachteile des Voraboffenlegens aller Interviewfragen und der damit verbundenen ethischen Dimensionen. Darüber hinaus untersuchen wir die Erfahrungen von sechs Englischlehrenden in Norwegen, die im Voraus Zugang zu allen Interviewfragen hatten, um sich auf Interviews über ihre individuellen Unterrichtsüberzeugungen zum Thema Mehrsprachigkeit und mehrsprachige Praktiken vorzubereiten. Der Beitrag schließt mit der Feststellung, dass das Teilen von Interviewfragen im Voraus sowohl den Teilnehmenden zugutekommen als auch die Qualität der Forschung verbessern kann. Las entrevistas sirven como una herramienta metodológica destacada en la lingüística aplicada, permitiendo a los investigadores explorar las ideologías y creencias lingüísticas de los participantes. Sin embargo, a menudo no está claro si las preguntas de la entrevista se han compartido con los participantes de antemano, aunque esta decisión metodológica podría influir sustancialmente en las respuestas y reflexiones posteriores. Algunas ventajas de compartir las preguntas de la entrevista con los participantes de antemano incluyen una mayor participación y reflexividad de los participantes, reducción de la ansiedad en la entrevista y respuestas más meditadas.     We study whether there are improvements in worker-firm matching when employers and applicants can credibly signal their interest in a match. Using a detailed résumé dataset of more than 400 applicants from one university over five years, we analyze a matching process in which firms fill some of their inter- view slots by invitation and the remainder are filled by an auction. Consistent with the predictions of a signaling model, we find the auction is valuable for less desirable firms trying to hire high desirability applicants. Second, we find evidence that is consistent with the auction benefiting overlooked applicants. Candidates who are less likely to be invited for an interview (e.g., non-U.S. citizens) are hired after having the opportunity to interview through the auction. Among hires, these candidates are more represented among auction winners than invited interviewees, and this difference is more pronounced at more desirable firms. Finally, counterfactual analysis shows the auction increases the number and quality of hires for less desirable firms, and total hires in the market.

    Industrial demand response can play an important part in balancing the intermittent production from a growing share of renewable energies in electricity markets. This paper analyses the role of aggregators - intermediaries between participants and the electricity market - in facilitating industrial demand response. Based on the results from semi-structured interviews with German demand response aggregators, as well as a wider stakeholder online survey, we examine the role of aggregators in overcoming barriers to industrial demand response. We find that a central role for aggregators is to raise awareness for the potentials of demand response, as well as to support implementation by engaging key actors in industrial companies. Moreover, we develop a taxonomy that helps analyse how the different functional roles of aggregators create economic value. We find that there is considerable heterogeneity in the kind of services that aggregators offer, many of which do create significant economic value. However, some of the functional roles that aggregators currently fill may become obsolete once market barriers to demand response are reduced or knowledge on demand response becomes more diffused.

    Trotz der zentralen Bedeutung von Versuchspersonen für die klinische Forschung bleiben diese für die späteren KonsumentInnen, etwa von Kopfschmerztabletten, Antidepressiva oder von Tumortherapien, häufig unsichtbar. Auch in den Sozialwissenschaften finden sich bis heute nur einige wenige konzeptuelle Beiträge zu dieser Figur. Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich anhand des empirischen Beispiels der Psoriasis-Forschung in Deutschland der Frage, wer oder was heute auf dem Spiel steht, wenn Menschen zu Versuchspersonen in der biomedizinischen Forschung werden. Auf der Grundlage qualitativer Interviews mit PatientInnen und ForscherInnen lässt sich im Studien-Setting eine Gleichzeitigkeit der Abwesenheit von Beziehungen zwischen PatientInnen einerseits und der Anwesenheit von Infrastrukturen der Sorge sowie intensiver Beziehungsarbeit andererseits herausarbeiten. Geteilte Care-Arbeit gerät dabei zur notwendigen Bedingung für die Hervorbringung generalisierbaren Wissens. Ein der feministischen Wissenschafts- und Technikforschung entlehnter Begriff von Care und Care-Arbeit dient vor dem Hintergrund dieser Erkenntnisse als theoretische Klammer, die es erlaubt, die Vielgestaltigkeit der Figur Versuchsperson sichtbar zu machen.

    The book examines poverty on the basis of qualitative interviews and makes clear that the term conceals an entire lifeworld. Great Britain as the area of study is seen as the prototype of a 'neoliberal' welfare state in which poverty leads to the devaluation of social status. This is differentiated on the basis of the experiential dimensions of time, space and sociality. Social work helps those affected to counter the devaluations. Was macht ein Leben in Armut aus? Das Buch beantwortet diese Frage anhand qualitativer Interviews, durch die deutlich wird, dass sich hinter dem Sammelbegriff der Armut eine ganze Lebenswelt verbirgt. Diese dreht sich wesentlich um das basale und kurzfristige ,Über-die-Runden-Kommen'. Außerdem stehen Gefühle der Kränkung und der Scham im Zentrum. Großbritannien als Untersuchungsraum gilt hierbei als Prototyp eines sogenannten neoliberalen Wohlfahrtsstaats, in dem Armut zur Abwertung des sozialen Status führt. Das wird anhand der Erfahrungsdimensionen Zeit, Raum und Sozialität ausdifferenziert. Soziale Arbeit hilft den Betroffenen, den Devaluierungen zu begegnen.
