    Welche Räume und Architekturen brauchen Menschen, um gesund zu werden? Wie berücksichtigen und erfüllen Gesundheitsbauten der Zukunft die Bedürfnisse erkrankter Menschen? Der Strukturwandel im deutschen Gesundheitswesen erfordert neue, zukunftsfähige architektonische Konzepte, die sich aus einer vertieften Menschenkenntnis einerseits und einem neuen Architekturverständnis andererseits ableiten. Das Buch verbindet empirische Erkenntnisse der Modernen Architekturpsychologie mit einem neuartigen Verständnis von Architekturästhetik und -qualität zu einer Entwurfsmethodik, die das Erleben der Patientinnen und Patienten ins Zentrum stellt. „Architektur als zweiter Körper“ wird wichtigste Hülle einer sich fürchtenden Seele im kranken Leib. Die Synthese aus explorativem und evidenzbasiertem Entwerfen setzt sich zum Ziel, veraltete Strukturen und Anforderungen im Krankenhausentwurf zu durchbrechen und gleichzeitig den Wandel der universitären Lehre einzuleiten. Das Buch ist Argumentationsgrundlage für engagierte Medizinerinnen und Mediziner, ein Fachbuch für wissenschaftsinteressierte Architektinnen und Architekten sowie ein Lehrbuch für Studierende der Architektur und der Psychologie. What spaces and architectures do people need to get healthy? How do healthcare buildings of the future take into account and meet the needs of people who are ill? The structural change in the German health care system requires new, sustainable architectural concepts that are derived from a deeper understanding of human nature on the one hand and a new understanding of architecture on the other. The book combines empirical findings of Modern Architectural Psychology with a novel understanding of architectural aesthetics and quality to create a design methodology that focuses on the patient's experience. "Architecture as a second body" becomes the most important shell of a fearing soul in the sick body. The synthesis of exploratory and evidence-based design sets out to break through outdated structures and requirements in hospital design while initiating change in university teaching. The book is a basis for argumentation for committed medical professionals, a reference book for architects interested in science, and a textbook for students of architecture and psychology.

    An exploration of early modern accounts of sickness and disability—and what they tell us about our own approach to bodily differenceIn our age of biomedicine, society often treats sickness and disability as problems in need of solution. Phenomena of embodied difference, however, have not always been seen in terms of lack and loss. Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See explores the case of early modern Catholic Canada under French rule and shows it to be a period rich with alternative understandings of infirmity, disease, and death. Counternarratives to our contemporary assumptions, these early modern stories invite us to creatively imagine ways of living meaningfully with embodied difference today.At the heart of Dunn’s account are a range of historical sources: Jesuit stories of illness in New France, an account of Canada’s first hospital, the hagiographic vita of Catherine de Saint-Augustin, and tales of miraculous healings wrought by a dead Franciscan friar. In an early modern world that subscribed to a Christian view of salvation, both sickness and disability held significance for more than the body, opening opportunities for virtue, charity, and even redemption. Dunn demonstrates that when these reflections collide with modern thinking, the effect is a certain kind of freedom to reimagine what sickness and disability might mean to us.Reminding us that the meanings we make of embodied difference are historically conditioned, Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See makes a forceful case for the role of history in broadening our imagination

Der Strukturwandel im deutschen Gesundheitswesen erfordert neue, zukunftsfähige architektonische Konzepte, die sich aus einer vertieften Menschenkenntnis einerseits und einem neuen Architekturverständnis andererseits ableiten. Das Buch verbindet empirische Erkenntnisse der Modernen Architekturpsychologie mit einem neuartigen Verständnis von Architekturästhetik und -qualität zu einer Entwurfsmethodik, die das Erleben der Patientinnen und Patienten ins Zentrum stellt. „Architektur als zweiter Körper“ wird wichtigste Hülle einer sich fürchtenden Seele im kranken Leib. Die Synthese aus explorativem und evidenzbasiertem Entwerfen setzt sich zum Ziel, veraltete Strukturen und Anforderungen im Krankenhausentwurf zu durchbrechen und gleichzeitig den Wandel der universitären Lehre einzuleiten. Das Buch ist Argumentationsgrundlage für engagierte Medizinerinnen und Mediziner, ein Fachbuch für wissenschaftsinteressierte Architektinnen und Architekten sowie ein Lehrbuch für Studierende der Architektur und der Psychologie. What spaces and architectures do people need to get healthy? How do healthcare buildings of the future take into account and meet the needs of people who are ill? The structural change in the German health care system requires new, sustainable architectural concepts that are derived from a deeper understanding of human nature on the one hand and a new understanding of architecture on the other. The book combines empirical findings of Modern Architectural Psychology with a novel understanding of architectural aesthetics and quality to create a design methodology that focuses on the patient's experience. "Architecture as a second body" becomes the most important shell of a fearing soul in the sick body. The synthesis of exploratory and evidence-based design sets out to break through outdated structures and requirements in hospital design while initiating change in university teaching. The book is a basis for argumentation for committed medical professionals, a reference book for architects interested in science, and a textbook for students of architecture and psychology.

    An exploration of early modern accounts of sickness and disability—and what they tell us about our own approach to bodily differenceIn our age of biomedicine, society often treats sickness and disability as problems in need of solution. Phenomena of embodied difference, however, have not always been seen in terms of lack and loss. Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See explores the case of early modern Catholic Canada under French rule and shows it to be a period rich with alternative understandings of infirmity, disease, and death. Counternarratives to our contemporary assumptions, these early modern stories invite us to creatively imagine ways of living meaningfully with embodied difference today.At the heart of Dunn’s account are a range of historical sources: Jesuit stories of illness in New France, an account of Canada’s first hospital, the hagiographic vita of Catherine de Saint-Augustin, and tales of miraculous healings wrought by a dead Franciscan friar. In an early modern world that subscribed to a Christian view of salvation, both sickness and disability held significance for more than the body, opening opportunities for virtue, charity, and even redemption. Dunn demonstrates that when these reflections collide with modern thinking, the effect is a certain kind of freedom to reimagine what sickness and disability might mean to us.Reminding us that the meanings we make of embodied difference are historically conditioned, Where Paralytics Walk and the Blind See makes a forceful case for the role of history in broadening our imagination

    Longitudinal, disease-level data are used to analyze the impact of pharmaceutical innovation on longevity (mean age at death), hospital utilization, and medical expenditure in Greece during the period 1995 - 2010. The estimates indicate that pharmaceutical innovation increased mean age at death by 0.87 years (10.4 months) - about 44% of the total increase in longevity - and that diseases with larger increases in the cumulative number of drugs launched 1 - 4 years earlier had smaller increases in the number of hospital days. Real per capita pharmaceutical expenditure increased rapidly during this period, but 62% of the increase in pharmaceutical expenditure was offset by a reduction in hospital expenditure attributable to pharmaceutical innovation. The baseline estimate of the cost per life-year gained from pharmaceutical innovation in Greece is $17,117, which is a very small fraction of leading economists' estimates of the value of (or consumers' willingness to pay for) a one-year increase in life expectancy.
