    How do literature and other cultural forms shape how we imagine the planet, for better or worse? In this rich, original, and long awaited book, Jennifer Wenzel tackles the formal innovations, rhetorical appeals, and sociological imbrications of world literature that might help us confront unevenly distributed environmental crises, including global warming.The Disposition of Nature argues that assumptions about what nature is are at stake in conflicts over how it is inhabited or used. Both environmental discourse and world literature scholarship tend to confuse parts and wholes. Working with writing and film from Africa, South Asia, and beyond, Wenzel takes a contrapuntal approach to sites and subjects dispersed across space and time. Reading for the planet, Wenzel shows, means reading from near to there: across experiential divides, between specific sites, at more than one scale.Impressive in its disciplinary breadth, Wenzel’s book fuses insights from political ecology, geography, anthropology, history, and law, while drawing on active debates between postcolonial theory and world literature, as well as scholarship on the Anthropocene and the material turn. Environmental justice work demands interdisciplinary, transnational, transcommunity sharing, many border crossings and solid alliance-building.     Gesunde Lebensbedingungen sind von zentraler Bedeutung für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung lebenswerter Städte. Hierzu hat der ARL-Arbeitskreis "Planung für gesundheitsfördernde Stadtregionen" planerische und gesundheitsbezogene Erkenntnisse aus Wissenschaft und Praxis aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, aufbereitet und weiterentwickelt. In diesem Forschungsbericht werden grundlegende Begriffe und Konzepte, historische Entwicklungslinien und neue integrierte Perspektiven zum Verhältnis von Gesundheit, Raum und Intervention aufgezeigt. Darauf aufbauend werden strategische Ansätze zur Förderung von Gesundheit und Lebensqualität in Städten diskutiert und verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Umsetzung über planerische Instrumente beleuchtet. Die thematische Spannbreite der Beiträge reicht von grundlegenden Fragen der Umweltgerechtigkeit über partizipative und kooperative Verfahren bis hin zu konkreten Instrumenten wie einem Fachplan Gesundheit. Zudem werden gesundheitsbezogene Querbezüge zu ausgewählten Handlungsfeldern des räumlichen Planens gezogen – beispielsweise zur Klimaanpassung, zur Entwicklung von Grün- und Wasserflächen sowie zu Bewegungs- und Erholungsräumen in Städten. Zahlreiche Handlungsoptionen werden aufgezeigt, um die unterschiedlichen Handlungs- und Politikfelder der Gesundheitsförderung, der Prävention sowie der räumlichen Planung miteinander zu verzahnen. Healthy living conditions are of central importance for the sustainable development of liveable cities. On this subject a working group of the Academy for Spatial Planning and Research (ARL) on "Planning for healthy urban regions" discussed, condensed and advanced the state of knowledge on planning and urban health in research and practice. This research report addresses fundamental terms and concepts, historical lines of development and new integrative perspectives on the relations between health, space and intervention. Strategic approaches to promote public health and liveability in cities and their actual implementation through planning instruments are then discussed on this basis. The thematic focus thereby ranges from substantial questions on environmental justice, to participative and cooperative procedures, to concrete instruments like sectoral plans on health. Furthermore, health promotion is related to selected fields of action of spatial planning, such as climate adaptation and the development of urban green and blue spaces, and sports and leisure areas in cities. Different options for action are presented in order to interlink the different policy fields of health promotion, prevention and spatial planning.

Hsu points out, smell has long been spurned by Western aesthetics as a lesser sense for its qualities of subjectivity, volatility, and materiality. But it is these very qualities that make olfaction a vital tool for sensing and staging environmental risk and inequality. Unlike the other senses, smell extends across space and reaches into our bodies. Hsu traces how writers, artists, and activists have deployed these embodied, biochemical qualities of smell in their efforts to critique and reshape modernity's olfactory disparities. The Smell of Risk outlines the many ways that our differentiated atmospheres unevenly distribute environmental risk. Reading everything from nineteenth-century detective fiction and naturalist novels to contemporary performance art and memoir, Hsu takes up modernity’s differentiated atmospheres as a subject worth sniffing out. From the industrial revolution to current-day environmental crises, Hsu uses ecocriticism, geography, and critical race studies to, for example, explore Latinx communities exposed to freeway exhaust and pesticides, Asian diasporic artists' response to racialized discourse about Asiatic odors, and the devastation settler colonialism has reaped on Indigenous smellscapes. In each instance, Hsu demonstrates the violence that air maintenance, control, and conditioning enacts on the poor and the marginalized. From nineteenth-century miasma theory theory to the synthetic chemicals that pervade twenty-first century air, Hsu takes smell at face value to offer an evocative retelling of urbanization, public health, and environmental violence. We leverage spatial correlations in pollution in conjunction with proximity to Kilauea and wind direction to construct predictions of pollution exposure at each school. We precisely estimate that increased particulate pollution leads to a small but statistically significant drop in average test scores. Then, utilizing Hawai'i's rich diversity across schools in baseline exposure, we estimate sharp nonlinearities schools with higher baseline levels of pollution experience larger decreases in test scores than schools with less pollution exposure on average. At levels of particulate pollution higher than six micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3), we estimate that a one standard deviation increase in PM2.5 leads to a decline in test scores of 1.1 percent of a standard deviation. Lastly, we find that within schools the drop in test scores is concentrated among economically disadvantaged students. The effects of PM2.5 on student test scores are larger by a factor of ten for the poorest pupils. Similarly, the effects of SO2 are larger by a factor of six. We demonstrate that poor air quality disproportionately impacts the human capital accumulation of economically disadvantaged children.

Both environmental discourse and world literature scholarship tend to confuse parts and wholes. Working with writing and film from Africa, South Asia, and beyond, Wenzel takes a contrapuntal approach to sites and subjects dispersed across space and time. Reading for the planet, Wenzel shows, means reading from near to there: across experiential divides, between specific sites, at more than one scale.Impressive in its disciplinary breadth, Wenzel’s book fuses insights from political ecology, geography, anthropology, history, and law, while drawing on active debates between postcolonial theory and world literature, as well as scholarship on the Anthropocene and the material turn.     This study examines the uneven effects of air pollution from maritime ports on physical and mental health across racial groups. We exploit quasi-random variation in vessels in port from weather events far out in the ocean to estimate how port traffic influences air pollution and human health. We find that one additional vessel in a port over a year leads to 3.0 hospital visits per thousand Black residents within 25 miles of the port and only 1.0 per thousand for whites. We assess a port-related environmental regulation and show that the policy can help alleviate racial inequalities in health outcomes.

Hsu points out, smell has long been spurned by Western aesthetics as a lesser sense for its qualities of subjectivity, volatility, and materiality. But it is these very qualities that make olfaction a vital tool for sensing and staging environmental risk and inequality. Unlike the other senses, smell extends across space and reaches into our bodies. Hsu traces how writers, artists, and activists have deployed these embodied, biochemical qualities of smell in their efforts to critique and reshape modernity's olfactory disparities. The Smell of Risk outlines the many ways that our differentiated atmospheres unevenly distribute environmental risk. Reading everything from nineteenth-century detective fiction and naturalist novels to contemporary performance art and memoir, Hsu takes up modernity’s differentiated atmospheres as a subject worth sniffing out. From the industrial revolution to current-day environmental crises, Hsu uses ecocriticism, geography, and critical race studies to, for example, explore Latinx communities exposed to freeway exhaust and pesticides, Asian diasporic artists' response to racialized discourse about Asiatic odors, and the devastation settler colonialism has reaped on Indigenous smellscapes. In each instance, Hsu demonstrates the violence that air maintenance, control, and conditioning enacts on the poor and the marginalized.     The ever-deepening planetary crisis stipulates the urgency of bringing the Rio Conventions - the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) - closer together to achieve common goals and overcome trade-offs. The 2024 meetings of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs), the supreme decision-making bodies of the Conven-tions, offer a window of opportunity towards that end. High-level political momentum was created with the official launch of the pioneering Rio Trio Initiative in the run-up of the three COPs in September to catalyse urgent collaboration between the three Rio Conventions to achieve sustainable futures for all. This Policy Brief explores entry points for enhanced cooperation and coordination with a focus on three emerging themes under the UNFCCC: nature-based solutions (NbS), loss and damage, and just transition pathways. In addition, we argue that the Rio Conventions offer multilateral and national platforms for integrating common justice principles (distributive, procedural, recognition, restorative, cosmopolitan, ecological) to meet shared goals across these three themes.

    Christian literary scholars and ecocritics have generally not engaged each other in sustained and productive conversation. This article therefore updates and extends Timothy J. Burbery’s 2012 call for a Christian ecocriticism by showing that ecocriticism’s recent postcolonial turn has opened new opportunities for Christian literary scholars. Ecocriticism’s heightened attention to ways that environmental problems threaten the lives and livelihoods of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people provides an opportunity for Christians to become involved in both the scholarly project of ecocriticism and in the work of advancing global environmental justice. The author holds out hope that a rigorous Christian ecocriticism could pave the way for a potent new Christian environmentalism.

    We examine the impact of multinational oil companies' (MOCs) corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives on enabling youth participation in theecotourism development in Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Results from the use ofaverage treatment test of a combined propensity score matching and logit model indicate a significant difference between youths in MOCs’ CSR global memorandum of understanding (GMoU) households and non-GMoU households in the four parameters measured: availability of finance (3.76), access to adequate training (5.91), direct patronage (18.97), and economic capability of the youths (8.2).It shows that opportunities to supply products and services to the tourism sector can help ensure a sustainable market and increase incomes and other revenues in local communities driven from ecotourism - related activities, while minimizing economic leakages. This suggests that a pro-youth GMoU ecotourism projects of MOCs have a potential to play in the formation of linkages to help promote local economic development through job creation and business opportunities. It implies that a younger generation can help to promote economic diversification and contribute to job creation and enterprise development, while helping to address underdevelopment in remort areas and intractable environmental challenges of sub-Saharan Africa.

    Air pollution generates vast health burdens and economic costs around the world. Pollution exposure varies greatly, both between countries and within them. But the degree of air quality inequality and its' trajectory have not been quantified at a global level. I use economic inequality indices to measure global inequality in exposure to ambient fine particles smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5). I find high and rising levels of global air quality inequality. The global PM2.5 Gini Index rose from 0.30 in 2000 to 0.35 in 2020, exceeding levels of income inequality in many countries. Air quality inequality is mostly driven by differences between countries and less so by variation within them, as decomposition analysis shows. A large share of those facing the highest levels of PM2.5 exposure live in only a few countries. Building on the Global Burden of Disease framework, I find that mortality associated with PM2.5 exposure is even more unequal than pollution exposure itself. The findings suggest that the common focus on inequality within countries overlooks an important global dimension of environmental justice

    Nigeria's oil-producing region is experiencing a surge in community-based vigilante violence, potentially escalating conflict dynamics and increasing fear of injury. The reason it matters is that neighborhood vigilante groups are more likely to participate in criminal, political, and ethnic plotting and are not always controllable. This prompted us to look into whether GMoU cluster interventions by MOCs could lower the heat map of fatalities from vigilante violence in Nigeria's Niger Delta. The results of logit regression and propensity score matching demonstrate that the MOCs' limited CSR efforts to protect the area have been successful in creating, formalizing, equipping, and managing vigilante groups. The results also show that the CSR initiatives have reduced vigilante violence within and between host communities, as well as violence against their residents. This implies that raising awareness of CSR with the goal of strengthening vigilante control will strengthen the local security apparatus, discourage resurgence in the various rural areas, safeguard the workers and equipment of oil firms, and provide a favorable business environment in the area.
