The study maps the shift from Enlightenment cosmopolitanism to Byronic cosmopolitanism with special attention to the art pilgrimage abroad. For typically middle-class Russians daunted by the cultural riches of the West, vacationing in the North Caucasus, Georgia, and the Crimea afforded the compensatory opportunity to play colonizer kings and queens in “Asia.” Drawing on Anna Karenina and other literary classics, travel writing, journalism, and guidebooks, the investigation engages with current debates in cosmopolitan studies, including the fuzzy paradigm of “colonial cosmopolitanism.”

A world historical inquiry into pre-modern cosmopolitanism, The Persianate World traces the reach and limits of Persian as a Eurasian language in a comprehensive survey of its geographical, literary, and social frontiers. From Siberia to Southeast Asia, and between London and Beijing, this book shows how Persian gained, maintained, and finally surrendered its status to imperial and vernacular competitors. Fourteen essays trace Persian’s interactions with Bengali, Chinese, Turkic, Punjabi, and other languages to identify the forces that extended “Persographia,” the domain of written Persian. Scott Timcke explores the foundations of this impulse and how the militarization of digital society creates structural injustices and social inequalities. He analyses how new digital communication technologies support American paramountcy and conditions for worldwide capital accumulation. Shelley Streeby uncovers themes and images in this "literature of sensation" that reveal the profound influence that the U.S.-Mexican War and other nineteenth-century imperial ventures throughout the Americas had on U.S. politics and culture. Streeby's analysis of this fascinating body of popular literature and mass culture broadens into a sweeping demonstration of the importance of the concept of empire for understanding U.S. history and literature. This accessible, interdisciplinary book brilliantly analyzes the sensational literature of George Lippard, A.J.H Duganne, Ned Buntline, Metta Victor, Mary Denison, John Rollin Ridge, Louisa May Alcott, and many other writers. Streeby also discusses antiwar articles in the labor and land reform press; ideas about Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua in popular culture; and much more.     Combining original historical research with literary analysis, Adam Barrows takes a provocative look at the creation of world standard time in 1884 and rethinks the significance of this remarkable moment in modernism for both the processes of imperialism and for modern literature. As representatives from twenty-four nations argued over adopting the Prime Meridian, and thereby measuring time in relation to Greenwich, England, writers began experimenting with new ways of representing human temporality. Barrows finds this experimentation in works as varied as Victorian adventure novels, high modernist texts, and South Asian novels—including the work of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, H. Rider Haggard, Bram Stoker, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad. Demonstrating the investment of modernist writing in the problems of geopolitics and in the public discourse of time, Barrows argues that it is possible, and productive, to rethink the politics of modernism through the politics of time

    In the year A.D. 8, Emperor Augustus sentenced the elegant, brilliant, and sophisticated Roman poet Ovid to exile—permanently, as it turned out—at Tomis, modern Constantza, on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea. The real reason for the emperor's action has never come to light, and all of Ovid's subsequent efforts to secure either a reprieve or, at the very least, a transfer to a less dangerous place of exile failed. Two millennia later, the agonized, witty, vivid, nostalgic, and often slyly malicious poems he wrote at Tomis remain as fresh as the day they were written, a testament for exiles everywhere, in all ages. The two books of the Poems of Exile, the Lamentations (Tristia) and the Black Sea Letters (Epistulae ex Ponto), chronicle Ovid's impressions of Tomis—its appalling winters, bleak terrain, and sporadic raids by barbarous nomads—as well as his aching memories and ongoing appeals to his friends and his patient wife to intercede on his behalf. While pretending to have lost his old literary skills and even to be forgetting his Latin, in the Poems of Exile Ovid in fact displays all his virtuoso poetic talent, now concentrated on one objective: ending the exile. But his rhetorical message falls on obdurately deaf ears, and his appeals slowly lose hope. A superb literary artist to the end, Ovid offers an authentic, unforgettable panorama of the death-in-life he endured at Tomis

    Galatians 3:28 has often been compared and contrasted with ancient conceptions of “cosmopolitanism.” However, the present study takes a modern, etic approach to the definition of term, based on the longitudinal investigation of historical trends by a Cambridge working group. Seen from that vantage point, Paul’s declaration in Gal 3:28 can be described in terms of the “political cosmopolitanism” that is characteristic of empire-builders in the Ancient Near East and the Mediterranean. At the same time, Gal 3:28 is rooted in Paul’s Jewish apocalyptic worldview, especially as exemplified in the Enochic tradition, which had already been interacting with the political cosmopolitanism of pagan empires for centuries.

The study maps the shift from Enlightenment cosmopolitanism to Byronic cosmopolitanism with special attention to the art pilgrimage abroad. For typically middle-class Russians daunted by the cultural riches of the West, vacationing in the North Caucasus, Georgia, and the Crimea afforded the compensatory opportunity to play colonizer kings and queens in “Asia.” Drawing on Anna Karenina and other literary classics, travel writing, journalism, and guidebooks, the investigation engages with current debates in cosmopolitan studies, including the fuzzy paradigm of “colonial cosmopolitanism.”

    “Perspectives” such as the “New Perspective” or the “Radical New Perspective” on Paul, to name two prominent versions, have come to characterise much of Pauline research since the late twentieth century. This article explores the settings of and reasons for the particular “perspectival” focus on the Pauline letters, its ensuing legacies, and subsequent impact on Pauline studies. Hermeneutical approaches such as perspectives in Pauline scholarship are more than simply heuristic approaches, so that their wider significance and effects deserve attention. Reflections on (some of) the effects and impact of such multifaceted approaches on Pauline scholarship, amidst a plethora of juxtaposed methodological approaches where primary perspectival leanings often linger, conclude the article.

    Die Studie problematisiert die osmanisch-griechische Identität anhand des entsprechenden Diskurses im Vereinsjournal des Griechischen Philologischen Vereins in Konstantinopel. Als Hauptstadt verkörperte Konstantinopel die Transformationen, denen der osmanische Staat und die osmanische Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert unterlagen. Die im Vereinsjournal gespiegelten Aktivitäten der Gesellschaft sind als Antwort auf diese Transformationen zu sehen und somit Ausdruck des zugrunde liegenden Selbstbildes. Daher gilt das Interesse gleichermaßen der Aufzeichnung der relevanten Informationen wie den damit zusammenhängenden Interpretationen. Über den griechisch-orthodoxen Kontext des Vereins hinaus erörtert die Arbeit in diesem Zusammenhang das Konzept der Moderne sowohl im internationalen Rahmen als auch innerhalb des osmanischen Reichs. This study contributes to the understanding of Ottoman-Greek identity by exploring the discourse that the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople has published on this topic in its journal. As capital of the Ottoman Empire, the city of Constantinople epitomized the transformations both Ottoman state and society experienced in the 19th century. The specific spatial and temporal position of the Society’s activities, as reflected in its journal, can be regarded as an answer to those very transformations and thus as an expression of the underlying sense of identity. Equal emphasis is placed on the recording of the relevant information and on its coherent interpretation. In order to avoid applying too narrow a view by placing the Society exclusively in an orthodox or Greek context, the concept of modernity as a shared experience on an international scale and within the Ottoman Empire is established as the principal frame of reference.

    If the Book of Revelation is anti-imperial resistance literature of the first order, hip-hop music is its contemporary equivalent - with Kendrick Lamar as one of its most politically sensitized "prophets." I will explore the intersections, commonalities, and divergences between Revelation 17-18 and rapper Kendrick's "For Sale? (Interlude)," especially regarding notions of empire, gender, and sexuality. I will draw connections between the characters of "For Sale" - Kendrick and Lucy - and those of Revelation 17-18 - John of Patmos and Babylon. This analysis will reveal the relationship between anti-imperial rhetoric and the troubling "effemination" of empire. I contend that Babylon and Lucy are both figures "in drag," dis/closing the prevailing imperial and misogynistic forces of their respective cultures. This queer interpretation, playing off Catherine Keller's and Stephen D. Moore's reading of the text and J. Jack Halberstam's study of drag kings, seeks to unveil the hypermasculine performances in both Revelation and contemporary hip-hop culture.

    Als Politiker, Redner und Philosoph hat Cicero (106–43 v. Chr.) unzählige Spuren im Gedächtnis seiner Zeitgenossen und späterer Generationen hinterlassen. Günter Gawlick zeigt, wo wir in Wissenschaft, Kunst und im Alltag auf diese Spuren stoßen und mit welch unterschiedlichen Bewertungen sie verbunden sind. Ferner schildert er, wie Cicero auf spätere Entwicklungen in ganz Europa von der Spätantike bis zur Gegenwart eingewirkt hat: anregend, wegweisend, aufklärend und Unruhe stiftend. Durch Hinweise auf weniger bekannte Zeugnisse und eine neue Akzentsetzung bei vertrauten Zeugnissen wird die Forschung angeregt. Der Autor verknüpft mit dem Versuch, die unterschiedliche Bewertung des Denkers Cicero zu erklären, eine neue Auffassung von diesem als einem Philosophen der geistigen Freiheit und Befreiung. As a politician, orator and philosopher, Cicero (106–43 BC) left countless traces in the memory of his contemporaries and later generations. Günter Gawlick shows where we come across these traces and their different evaluations in science, art and everyday life. He also describes how Cicero influenced later developments throughout Europe from late antiquity to the present day: stimulating, pioneering, enlightening and stirring up trouble. Research is stimulated by references to lesser-known testimonies and a new emphasis on familiar testimonies. The author links the attempt to explain the different evaluations of the thinker Cicero with a new conception of him as a philosopher of intellectual freedom and liberation.

    This paper uses a new dataset on the universe of Canadian imports and tariffs between 1924 and 1936, disaggregated into 1697 goods originating in 112 countries, to analyse the impact on Canadian imports of interwar Canadian trade policy, including the 1932 Ottawa trade agreements. Rather than use a dummy variable approach, we compute the impact of individual tariffs which varied substantially across goods, trade partners, and time. We develop a novel method of controlling for multilateral resistances in the context of a one-country dataset, and perform a variety of counterfactual exercises to determine the impact of tariffs on trade flows. The overall impact of post-1929 tariff shifts, including the 1932 agreements, was relatively small, reflecting the fact that Canadian trade policy was already highly protectionist: trade agreements can have heterogenous effects on participants because the shocks involved are different. Compared with a free trade counterfactual, the impact of the overall structure of protection on the level and composition of trade was large.
