    Outbreak narratives have proliferated for the past quarter century, and now they have reached epidemic proportions. From 28 Days Later to 24 to The Walking Dead, movies, TV shows, and books are filled with zombie viruses, bioengineered plagues, and disease-ravaged bands of survivors. Even news reports indulge in thrilling scenarios about potential global pandemics like SARS and Ebola. Why have outbreak narratives infected our public discourse, and how have they affected the way Americans view the world? In Going Viral, Dahlia Schweitzer probes outbreak narratives in film, television, and a variety of other media, putting them in conversation with rhetoric from government authorities and news organizations that have capitalized on public fears about our changing world. She identifies three distinct types of outbreak narrative, each corresponding to a specific contemporary anxiety: globalization, terrorism, and the end of civilization. Schweitzer considers how these fears, stoked by both fictional outbreak narratives and official sources, have influenced the ways Americans relate to their neighbors, perceive foreigners, and regard social institutions. Looking at everything from I Am Legend to The X Files to World War Z, this book examines how outbreak narratives both excite and horrify us, conjuring our nightmares while letting us indulge in fantasies about fighting infected Others. Going Viral thus raises provocative questions about the cost of public paranoia and the power brokers who profit from it.     Myung Mi Kim's Commons weighs on the most sensitive of scales the minute grains of daily life in both peace and war, registering as very few works of literature have done our common burden of being subject to history. Abstracting colonization, war, immigration, disease, and first-language loss until only sparse phrases remain, Kim takes on the anguish and displacement of those whose lives are embedded in history.Kim's blank spaces are loaded silences: openings through which readers enter the text and find their way. These silences reveal gaps in memory and articulate experiences that will not translate into language at all. Her words retrieve the past in much the same way the human mind does: an image sparks another image, a scent, the sound of bombs, or conversation. These silences and pauses give the poems their structure.Commons's fragmented lyric pushes the reader to question the construction of the poem. Identity surfaces, sinks back, then rises again. On this shifting ground, Kim creates meaning through juxtaposed fragments. Her verse, with its stops and starts, its austere yet rich images, offers splinters of testimony and objection. It negotiates a constantly changing world, scavenging through scraps of experience, spaces around words, and remnants of emotion for a language that enfolds the enormity of what we cannot express

    Demenz fordert die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft heraus. Dies stellt nicht nur die Medizin vor Herausforderungen. Es stellen sich auch wichtige Fragen zum Umgang mit erkrankten Menschen und ihrem sozialen Umfeld. Daran zeigt sich, dass Demenz ein reflexionsbedürftiger Gegenstand mit vielen Facetten ist. Die deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur reagiert ab der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre mit Kontinuität auf den Diskurs über Demenz. Dabei adaptiert sie nicht bloß zirkulierendes Wissen über den Gegenstand ‚Demenz‘, sondern gestaltet ihn im Rahmen ästhetischer Konzeptionen mit. Auf Basis der Diskurstheorie von Michel Foucault und der Wissenspoetologie von Joseph Vogl untersucht die Arbeit die vielschichtigen Darstellungsweisen von Demenz innerhalb von Literatur. Dabei identifiziert sie ein breites Spektrum, das von Normierungsbestrebungen bis zu offen konzipierten Textkonstruktionen reicht.

    Seit der Antike wird die Melancholie von Denkern, Dichtern und Künstlern sowohl verteufelt als auch zur Muse erklärt: Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt, dass Hugo von Hofmannsthal in seinem Werk Repräsentationen und Bewertungen des Phänomens aufgreift, die aus einer über 2500 Jahre währenden Diskursgeschichte stammen. In dieser Assemblage wird die Idee der schöpferischen und der destruktiven Schwermut sichtbar, die in Verbindung mit Künstlertum und Krankheit steht. Bahnbrechende Texte von Robert Burton, John Milton und Walter Benjamin stehen ebenso im Zentrum der Studie wie die melancholischen Protagonisten und Randfiguren, die im Gewand von Hamlet, Pierrot oder dem Menschenfeind in Erscheinung treten. Außerdem verbirgt sich die Schwermut in Bildern und körperlichen Gesten, die Hofmannsthals Texte, insbesondere zahlreiche Fragmente, aufgreifen. Zwischen Dichtung, den bildenden Künsten und dem Tanz entsteht so ein Netz aus intermedialen und intertextuellen Bezügen, die das ambivalente Wesen der Melancholie zum Ausdruck bringen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Gerhart-Baumann-Preis 2019. Since ancient times, the melancholy of thinkers, writers and artists has been declared as both a thorn in their side and a source of their creative inspiration. This book reveals that, in his works, Hugo von Hofmannsthal draws on representations and evaluations of this phenomenon, which stem from a historical discourse that lasted over 2500 years. This collection of depictions and appraisals sheds light on the idea of melancholy being both inspirational and destructive in terms of artistic output. This study focuses on groundbreaking texts by Robert Burton, John Milton and Walter Benjamin as well as melancholic protagonists and peripheral characters, who appear in the guise of Hamlet, Pierrot and misanthropes. Melancholy can also be found in pictures and gestures, which Hofmannsthal’s texts, particularly his numerous textual fragments, draw on. Consequently, this study highlights a network of cross-medium and intertextual relations between literature, the fine arts and dance, which convey the ambiguous nature of melancholy. This book was awarded the Gerhart Baumann Prize in 2019.

The Plague in Book 6 -- 5 Afterword -- Bibliography -- Index Rerum et Nominum -- Index Locorum The standard view in scholarship is that disease in Lucretius' De rerum natura is mainly a problem to be solved and then dispensed with.However, a closer reading suggests that things are more layered and complex than they appear at first sight: just as morbus causes a radical rearrangement of atoms in the body and makes the patient engage with alternative and up to that point unknown dimensions of the sensible world, so does disease as a theme generate a multiplicity of meanings in the text. The present book argues for a reconsideration of morbus in De rerum natura along those lines: it invites the reader to revisit the topic of disease and reflect on the various, and often contrasting, discourses that unfold around it. More specifically, it illustrates how, apart from calling for therapy, disease, due to its dominant presence in the narrative, transforms at the same time into a concept that is integral both to the poem's philosophical agenda but also to its wider aesthetic concerns as a literary product.The book thus sheds new light on De rerum natura's intense preoccupation with morbus by showing how disease is not exclusively conceived by Lucretius as a blind, obliterating force but is crucially linked to life and meaning-both inside and outside the text

This volume examines this connection from an interdisciplinary perspective, investigating the aesthetics of health narratives, performances of that narratively generate health, and the ideologies of a diverse range of "healing" narratives Während Krankheitserzählungen seit Jahrzehnten einen bedeutenden Analysegegenstand der erzähltheoretisch arbeitenden Disziplinen bilden, wurde die Verbindung von Gesundheit und Erzählen bisher nur selten untersucht. Der Band widmet sich solchen Gesundheitserzählungen in einem dezidiert interdisziplinären Zugang: Neben Beiträgen aus unterschiedlichen Literaturwissenschaften versammelt er Forschungsarbeiten aus den Bereichen der Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Ethnologie und Rechtswissenschaften.     By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic. Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Auch Thomas Mann war vom Nervendiskurs seiner Zeit wie auch vom Wissen um die Neurasthenie beeinflusst. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen.

    Outbreak narratives have proliferated for the past quarter century, and now they have reached epidemic proportions. From 28 Days Later to 24 to The Walking Dead, movies, TV shows, and books are filled with zombie viruses, bioengineered plagues, and disease-ravaged bands of survivors. Even news reports indulge in thrilling scenarios about potential global pandemics like SARS and Ebola. Why have outbreak narratives infected our public discourse, and how have they affected the way Americans view the world? In Going Viral, Dahlia Schweitzer probes outbreak narratives in film, television, and a variety of other media, putting them in conversation with rhetoric from government authorities and news organizations that have capitalized on public fears about our changing world. She identifies three distinct types of outbreak narrative, each corresponding to a specific contemporary anxiety: globalization, terrorism, and the end of civilization. Schweitzer considers how these fears, stoked by both fictional outbreak narratives and official sources, have influenced the ways Americans relate to their neighbors, perceive foreigners, and regard social institutions. Looking at everything from I Am Legend to The X Files to World War Z, this book examines how outbreak narratives both excite and horrify us, conjuring our nightmares while letting us indulge in fantasies about fighting infected Others. Going Viral thus raises provocative questions about the cost of public paranoia and the power brokers who profit from it.     "Stock estimates" of missing women suggest that the problem is concentrated in South and East Asia and among young children. In contrast, 'flow estimates' suggest that gender bias in mortality is much larger, is as severe among adults as it is among children in India and China, and is larger in Sub-Saharan Africa than in India and China. We show that the different stock and flow measure results rely on the choice of the reference standard for mortality and an incomplete correction for different disease environments in the flow measure. Alternative reference standards reconcile the results of the two measures.

    The standard view in scholarship is that disease in Lucretius' De rerum natura is mainly a problem to be solved and then dispensed with.However, a closer reading suggests that things are more layered and complex than they appear at first sight: just as morbus causes a radical rearrangement of atoms in the body and makes the patient engage with alternative and up to that point unknown dimensions of the sensible world, so does disease as a theme generate a multiplicity of meanings in the text. The present book argues for a reconsideration of morbus in De rerum natura along those lines: it invites the reader to revisit the topic of disease and reflect on the various, and often contrasting, discourses that unfold around it. More specifically, it illustrates how, apart from calling for therapy, disease, due to its dominant presence in the narrative, transforms at the same time into a concept that is integral both to the poem's philosophical agenda but also to its wider aesthetic concerns as a literary product.The book thus sheds new light on De rerum natura's intense preoccupation with morbus by showing how disease is not exclusively conceived by Lucretius as a blind, obliterating force but is crucially linked to life and meaning-both inside and outside the text.

    Demenz fordert die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft heraus. Dies stellt nicht nur die Medizin vor Herausforderungen. Es stellen sich auch wichtige Fragen zum Umgang mit erkrankten Menschen und ihrem sozialen Umfeld. Daran zeigt sich, dass Demenz ein reflexionsbedürftiger Gegenstand mit vielen Facetten ist. Die deutschsprachige Gegenwartsliteratur reagiert ab der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er Jahre mit Kontinuität auf den Diskurs über Demenz. Dabei adaptiert sie nicht bloß zirkulierendes Wissen über den Gegenstand ‚Demenz‘, sondern gestaltet ihn im Rahmen ästhetischer Konzeptionen mit. Auf Basis der Diskurstheorie von Michel Foucault und der Wissenspoetologie von Joseph Vogl untersucht die Arbeit die vielschichtigen Darstellungsweisen von Demenz innerhalb von Literatur. Dabei identifiziert sie ein breites Spektrum, das von Normierungsbestrebungen bis zu offen konzipierten Textkonstruktionen reicht.
