    In the year A.D. 8, Emperor Augustus sentenced the elegant, brilliant, and sophisticated Roman poet Ovid to exile-permanently, as it turned out-at Tomis, modern Constantza, on the Romanian coast of the Black Sea. The real reason for the emperor's action has never come to light, and all of Ovid's subsequent efforts to secure either a reprieve or, at the very least, a transfer to a less dangerous place of exile failed. Two millennia later, the agonized, witty, vivid, nostalgic, and often slyly malicious poems he wrote at Tomis remain as fresh as the day they were written, a testament for exiles everywhere, in all ages. The two books of the Poems of Exile, the Lamentations (Tristia) and the Black Sea Letters (Epistulae ex Ponto), chronicle Ovid's impressions of Tomis-its appalling winters, bleak terrain, and sporadic raids by barbarous nomads-as well as his aching memories and ongoing appeals to his friends and his patient wife to intercede on his behalf. While pretending to have lost his old literary skills and even to be forgetting his Latin, in the Poems of Exile Ovid in fact displays all his virtuoso poetic talent, now concentrated on one objective: ending the exile. But his rhetorical message falls on obdurately deaf ears, and his appeals slowly lose hope. A superb literary artist to the end, Ovid offers an authentic, unforgettable panorama of the death-in-life he endured at Tomis.

    This bilingual Ukrainian-English collection brings together the most interesting experimental works by Mykola (Nik) Bazhan, one of the major Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. As he moved from futurism to neoclassicism, symbolism to socialist realism, Bazhan consistently displayed a creative approach to theme, versification, and vocabulary. Many poems from his three remarkable early collections (1926, 1927, and 1929) remain unknown to readers, both in Ukraine and the West. Because Bazhan was later forced into the straitjacket of officially sanctioned socialist realism, his early poetry has been neglected. This collection makes these outstanding works available for the first time.

    Zvi Preigerzon (1900-1969), a Hebrew writer in the Soviet Union, wrote this book in complete secrecy, to the extent that he even hid its existence from his own family. The book is about the Jewish community in Hadiach, a small town in Ukraine where Shneur Zalman Schneerson, the founder of the Chabad movement, is buried. The town was occupied by the German army during the war and most of its Jewish population perished. Zvi Preigerzon describes the life of the simple Jewish people and their suffering under the Nazis, with a Kabbalistic spiritual touch: the Perpetual Flame of the Menorah at the grave of Shneur Zalman Schneerson symbolizes the very spirit of Jewish life, which it is said will persist as long as the flame is burning.

    This is a comprehensive study of one of the most influential literary groups in post-independence Ireland: the writers and editors of the literary magazine The Bell. Se{acute}an O'Faol{acute}ain and the generation of writers that matured in the shadows of W. B. Yeats and James Joyce dominated the literary landscape in Ireland in the build-up to, and during, the Second World War. This is their story, as told through the history of one journal: The Bell. Working with previously unpublished archival material, this study looks to illuminate the relationships, disputes and loves of the contributors to Ireland's most important 'little magazine' under the guiding influence of its founding editor, Se{acute}an O'Faol{acute}ain. In doing so, it sheds new light on O'Faol{acute}ain's early influences and his attitude towards the Church and the state in Ireland.

    Brodsky’s poetic career in the West was launched when Joseph Brodsky: Selected Poems was published in 1973. Its translator was a scholar and war hero, George L. Kline. This is the story of that friendship and collaboration, from its beginnings in 1960s Leningrad and concluding with the Nobel poet's death in 1996.Kline translated more of Brodsky’s poems than any other single person, with the exception of Brodsky himself. The Bryn Mawr philosophy professor and Slavic scholar was a modest and retiring man, but on occasion he could be as forthright and adamant as Brodsky himself. “Akhmatova discovered Brodsky for Russia, but I discovered him for the West,” he claimed.Kline’s interviews with author Cynthia L. Haven before his death in 2015 include a description of his first encounter with Brodsky, the KGB interrogations triggered by their friendship, Brodsky's emigration, and the camaraderie and conflict over translation. When Kline called Brodsky in London to congratulate him for the Nobel, the grateful poet responded, “And congratulations to you, too, George!”

    This bilingual Ukrainian-English collection brings together the most interesting experimental works by Mykola (Nik) Bazhan, one of the major Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. As he moved from futurism to neoclassicism, symbolism to socialist realism, Bazhan consistently displayed a creative approach to theme, versification, and vocabulary. Many poems from his three remarkable early collections (1926, 1927, and 1929) remain unknown to readers, both in Ukraine and the West. Because Bazhan was later forced into the straitjacket of officially sanctioned socialist realism, his early poetry has been neglected. This collection makes these outstanding works available for the first time.

    Come reagiscono Torquato Tasso e Giovan Battista Marino al contesto vigilante e normativo tra Cinque- e Seicento? A partire dal rapporto che i due autori nutrono nei confronti delle norme e delle regole si prendono in considerazione due tattiche evasive pensate per salvaguardare lascivie e incanti nei poemi: da un lato l’allegoria, dall’altro il travestimento. Il percorso di Tasso è evolutivo e la sua opinione cambia in base all’interiorizzazione di leggi e valori che portano a una rivalutazione delle opinioni iniziali, mentre Marino trasgredisce le regole e utilizza elementi tipicamente difensivi – quali l’allegoria – rovesciandoli e inventandone un uso celatamente offensivo. In questo contesto vengono così rivalutate le allegorie paratestuali dell’Adone di Marino, finora mal considerate dalla critica, e viene ripensato il percorso tassiano in un’ottica che vede i due autori non come vittime di un sistema censorio, ma come partecipanti attivi.

    2019 jährte sich das Erscheinen von Defoes Robinson Crusoe zum 300. Mal. Zu diesem Anlass fand am Zentrum für Buchwissenschaft der LMU München eine Tagung statt, bei der buchhandelsgeschichtliche Kontexte des Romans dargelegt, neue Interpretationen diskutiert sowie die Rezeption des Robinson Crusoe untersucht wurden. In der Einleitung des Sammelbandes legt Christine Haug dar, unter welchen presse- und buchgeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen sich Daniel Defoe im frühkapitalistischen London als Bestsellerautor und politischer Journalist etablieren konnte. Die folgenden Beiträge behandeln motivgeschichtliche, ökonomische, kultur- und rechtsgeschichtliche Aspekte des Robinson Crusoe (Oliver Bach, Anne Enderwitz, Hania Siebenpfeiffer, Daniel Syrovy), befassen sich mit der Gattung der Robinsonade ( Iwan Michelangelo d’Aprile, Norbert Bachleitner, Wolfram Malte Fues, Wynfrid Kriegleder), mit jugendliterarischen Bearbeitungen des Stoffes (Andrew O`Malley, Peter Pohl, Hans-Heino Ewers) und mit der Robinson-Rezeption in der Lyrik und im Roman des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts (Bill Bell, Daniela Jancsó). Der vorliegende Sammelband gehört zu den wenigen neuen Neuerscheinungen, die zum Robinson-Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Erstmals wird darin im deutschsprachigen Raum die aktuelle internationale Forschung zu Defoe ausführlich dargestellt und mit einer innovativen Sicht auf den in Entstehung begriffenen globalen Buchmarkt verbunden. The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century.

Zu diesem Anlass fand am Zentrum für Buchwissenschaft der LMU München eine Tagung statt, bei der buchhandelsgeschichtliche Kontexte des Romans dargelegt, neue Interpretationen diskutiert sowie die Rezeption des Robinson Crusoe untersucht wurden. In der Einleitung des Sammelbandes legt Christine Haug dar, unter welchen presse- und buchgeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen sich Daniel Defoe im frühkapitalistischen London als Bestsellerautor und politischer Journalist etablieren konnte. Die folgenden Beiträge behandeln motivgeschichtliche, ökonomische, kultur- und rechtsgeschichtliche Aspekte des Robinson Crusoe (Oliver Bach, Anne Enderwitz, Hania Siebenpfeiffer, Daniel Syrovy), befassen sich mit der Gattung der Robinsonade ( Iwan Michelangelo d'Aprile, Norbert Bachleitner, Wolfram Malte Fues, Wynfrid Kriegleder), mit jugendliterarischen Bearbeitungen des Stoffes (Andrew O`Malley, Peter Pohl, Hans-Heino Ewers) und mit der Robinson-Rezeption in der Lyrik und im Roman des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts (Bill Bell, Daniela Jancsó). Der vorliegende Sammelband gehört zu den wenigen neuen Neuerscheinungen, die zum Robinson-Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Erstmals wird darin im deutschsprachigen Raum die aktuelle internationale Forschung zu Defoe ausführlich dargestellt und mit einer innovativen Sicht auf den in Entstehung begriffenen globalen Buchmarkt verbunden. The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century.

    Come reagiscono Torquato Tasso e Giovan Battista Marino al contesto vigilante e normativo tra Cinque- e Seicento? A partire dal rapporto che i due autori nutrono nei confronti delle norme e delle regole si prendono in considerazione due tattiche evasive pensate per salvaguardare lascivie e incanti nei poemi: da un lato l’allegoria, dall’altro il travestimento. Il percorso di Tasso è evolutivo e la sua opinione cambia in base all’interiorizzazione di leggi e valori che portano a una rivalutazione delle opinioni iniziali, mentre Marino trasgredisce le regole e utilizza elementi tipicamente difensivi – quali l’allegoria – rovesciandoli e inventandone un uso celatamente offensivo. In questo contesto vengono così rivalutate le allegorie paratestuali dell’Adone di Marino, finora mal considerate dalla critica, e viene ripensato il percorso tassiano in un’ottica che vede i due autori non come vittime di un sistema censorio, ma come partecipanti attivi.
