    "Alison Horbury investigates the reprisal of the myth of Persephone - a mother-daughter plot of separation and initiation - in post-feminist television cultures where, she argues, it functions as a symptom expressing a complex around the question of sexual difference - what Lacan calls 'sexuation', where this question has been otherwise foreclosed. She takes four television heroines dramatizing this Persephone symptom - Ally McBeal, Sydney Bristow, Veronica Mars, and Meredith Grey - to show what is unconscious in this symptom, and identifies an impasse in feminist cultural criticisms as they respond to post-feminist cultures where ideas about feminine sexuation conflict with poststructuralist thought on the topic of 'woman'. She introduces psychoanalytic approaches to the novel to rethink the engagement of audiences with long-form serial narrative, and suggests that post-feminist discourses manifesting in Persephone's story offer us a cultural symptom that, when analysed, offers us new reflections on feminism today"..

    "The Queer Fantasies of the American Family Sitcom explores how the fantasies of genre, marketing, and children can never fully cloak the queerness lurking within the plucky families designed for American viewers' comic delight. Queer readings of family sitcoms demolish myths of yesteryear, demonstrating the illusion of American sexual innocence in television's early programs and its lasting consequences in the nation's self-construction, as they also allow fresh insights into the ways in which more recent programs negotiate new visions of sexuality while indebted to previous narrative traditions. Simply put, queer readings of America's domestic sitcoms radically unsettle the nation's simplistic vision of itself, revealing both a deeper vision of its families and of a television genre overwhelmingly dismissed as frivolous fare. Tison Pugh thoroughly explores six specific family sitcoms to illustrate how issues of sexuality intersect with other critical concerns of their respective periods and cultures"...

    "Doppelter Einsatz" (Double the stakes) for gender studies: How traditional gender roles are (re)produced and/or rearranged in investigative teams featured in German crime series. Als »Ikonen starker Weiblichkeit« suggerieren TV-Kriminalkommissarinnen den deutschen Fernsehzuschauer_innen seit den 1990er Jahren, dass sie das tradierte Rollenbild, welches in den Medien vorherrscht und sich an traditionellen sozialgeschlechtlichen Zuschreibungen orientiert, durch ihr emanzipiertes To-have-it-all-Konzept durchbrechen können. Raphaela Tkotzyk untersucht anhand von verschiedenen Ermittlerpaaren der TV-Serien »Alarm für Cobra 11«, »Alarm für Cobra 11 - Einsatz für Team 2« sowie »Doppelter Einsatz«, inwieweit die fiktiven Charaktere traditionelle Geschlechterstereotypen aufweisen oder ob sie ein neues Rollenverständnis erschaffen. Dabei werden auch Aspekte der Kleidung und Sprache miteinbezogen.

    "The Queer Fantasies of the American Family Sitcom explores how the fantasies of genre, marketing, and children can never fully cloak the queerness lurking within the plucky families designed for American viewers' comic delight. Queer readings of family sitcoms demolish myths of yesteryear, demonstrating the illusion of American sexual innocence in television's early programs and its lasting consequences in the nation's self-construction, as they also allow fresh insights into the ways in which more recent programs negotiate new visions of sexuality while indebted to previous narrative traditions. Simply put, queer readings of America's domestic sitcoms radically unsettle the nation's simplistic vision of itself, revealing both a deeper vision of its families and of a television genre overwhelmingly dismissed as frivolous fare. Tison Pugh thoroughly explores six specific family sitcoms to illustrate how issues of sexuality intersect with other critical concerns of their respective periods and cultures"...

    The Queer Fantasies of the American Family Sitcom examines the evasive depictions of sexuality in domestic and family-friendly sitcoms. Tison Pugh charts the history of increasing sexual depiction in this genre while also unpacking how sitcoms use sexuality as a source of power, as a kind of camouflage, and as a foundation for family building. The book examines how queerness, at first latent, became a vibrant yet continually conflicted part of the family-sitcom tradition. Taking into account elements such as the casting of child actors, the use of and experimentation with plot traditions, the contradictory interpretive valences of comedy, and the subtle subversions of moral standards by writers and directors, Pugh points out how innocence and sexuality conflict on television. As older sitcoms often sit on a pedestal of nostalgia as representative of the Golden Age of the American Family, television history reveals a deeper, queerer vision of family bonds

    "In Screening Queer Memory, Anamarija Horvat examines how LGBTQ history has been represented on-screen, and interrogates the specificity of queer memory. She poses several questions: How are the pasts of LGBTQ people and communities visualised and commemorated on screen? How do these representations comment on the influence of film and television on the construction of queer memory? How do they present the passage of memory from one generation of LGBTQ people to another? Finally, which narratives of the queer past, particularly of the activist past, are being commemorated, and which obscured? Horvat exemplifies how contemporary British and American cinema and television have commented on the specificity of queer memory - how they have reflected aspects of its construction, as well as participated in its creation. In doing so, she adds to an under-examined area of queer film and television research which has privileged concepts of nostalgia, history, temporality and the archive over memory. Films and television shows explored include Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996), Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine (1998), Jill Soloway’s Transparent (2014-2019), Matthew Warchus’ Pride (2014) and Tom Rob Smith’s London Spy (2015)."

Through their analysis, they demonstrate the ways these non-white-centric shows negotiate prestige TV's dominant aesthetics of whiteness and push back against the centering of white suffering in a time of cultural crisis.Through the lens of media analysis and feminist cultural studies, Nygaard and Lagerwey's book opens up new ways of looking at contemporary television consumption-and the political, cultural, and social repercussions of these "horrible white people" shows, both on- and off-screen
