    Sápmi, the Sámi area, is transnational; it transcends four nation states, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Art and art history has been considered natural parts of a nation state’s inventory at least since the 19th century and has contributed to the production and maintenance of national identities and narratives. What is the role of the nation state in art history, and how has the national paradigm affected the presentation of Sámi art, historically and today? Focusing on the discipline of art history in Norway, the volume exposes the prevailing representation of Sámi art, duodji, and dáidda as ethnographic material and relates it to the politics of nation building in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The book examines the representation of Sámi art, artefacts, practices, materialites, actors, concepts, and themes in Norwegian Art History, to uncover some of the established disciplinary mechanisms and narratives. The central method is historiography in combination with fieldwork in archives and museums, aimed at doing art historiography in the expanded field – to move beyond the traditional textual focus and question naturalized institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This is one of very few historiographical studies of the art historical discipline in Norway, and the only one that does this by centring on Sámi traditions, items, actors, and conceptualizations.

    This book is the first monographic study of Tadeusz Baird – one of the greatest Polish composers of the second half of the 20th century, a connoisseur of music tradition and a prophet of the future of music (postmodernity), a composer of worldwide renown, an erudite. Baird was deeply engaged in art, aware of the threats and problems of contemporary world, and endowed with a sense of a mission. His personality was shaped by traumatic experiences during World War II and during the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was very demanding of himself and others. As signaled in the title, the book is an extensive, monographic representation of the composer's work and concepts in their stylistic, cultural, and esthetic contexts.

    The aim of this monograph is to present the traces of intercultural encounters between Poland and Latin America realized by means of literary translations produced in the post-war period. It considers various aspects of the reception of Polish translations of Spanish American prose in 1945-2005 by examining their presence on the book market in the communist times and after 1990 in free market conditions. The analyses of critical texts show the attitudes of Polish critics towards this prose over the years. Survey research presents motives, behaviours and needs developed in different epochs by Polish readers. The interdisciplinary character of the monograph involves methodology inspired by translation, reception and cultural studies, sociology of literature and intercultural semantics.

    The second century CE has often been described as a kind of dark period with regard to our knowledge of how the earliest Christian writings (the gospels and Paul’s letters) were transmitted and gradually came to be accepted as authoritative and then, later on, as "canonical". At the same time a number of other Christian texts, of various genres, saw the light. Some of these seem to be familiar with the gospels, or perhaps rather with gospel traditions identical or similar to those that found their way into the NT gospels. The volume focuses on representative texts and authors of the time in order to see how they have struggled to find a way to work with the NT gospels and/or the traditions behind these, while at the same time giving a place also to other extra-canonical traditions.It studies in a comparative way the reception of identifiably "canonical" and of extra-canonical traditions in the second century. It aims at discovering patterns or strategies of reception within the at first sight often rather chaotic way some of these ancient authors have cited or used these traditions. And it will look for explanations of why it took such a while before authors got used to cite gospel texts (more or less) accurately

    This volume, in honour of Angus M. Bowie, collects seventeen original essays on Greek comedy. Its contributors treat questions of origin, genre and artistic expression, interpret individual plays from different angles (literary, historical, performative) and cover aspects of reception from antiquity to the 20th century. Topics that have not received much attention so far, such as the prehistory of Doric comedy or music in Old Comedy, receive a prominent place. The essays are arranged in three sections: (1) Genre, (2) Texts and Contexts, (3) Reception. Within each section the chapters are as far as possible arranged in chronological order, according to historical time or to the (putative) dates of the plays under discussion. Thus readers will be able to construe their own diachronic and thematic connections, for example between the portrayal of stock characters in early Doric farce and developed Attic New Comedy or between different forms of comic reception in the fourth century BC. The book is intended for professional scholars, graduate and undergraduate students. Its wide range of subjects and approaches will appeal not only to those working on Greek comedy, but to anyone interested in Greek drama and its afterlife

The examples span six centuries (from the 15th to the 20th century). They are not limited to the Latin reception, but also present texts from various genres and languages (including Latin, German, English, French, Italian etc.). The volume thus provides an impressive review of the variety of the modern reception of Virgil 19 Beiträger zeigen in diesem Sammelband anhand ausgewählter Beispiele, wie Vergils Werke,vor allemsein Epos Aeneis, von neuzeitlichen Autoren rezipiert werden. Die Beispiele umfassen fünf Jahrhunderte (vom 15. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert) und beschränken sich nicht auf die lateinische Rezeption, sondern stellen Texte unterschiedlicher Gattungen und Sprachen (Latein, Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch u.a.) vor. Der Band gibt so einen eindrucksvollen Überblick über die Vielfalt der neuzeitlichen Vergilrezeption. Die Komödien des Aristophanes wurden erst spät ins Deutsche übersetzt; vor allem die Fülle unverständlicher Anspielungen auf Athener Tagespolitik und der obszöne Witz behinderten ihre Rezeption. So war Johann Gustav Droysens Übersetzung von 1835/38 eine der ersten deutschen Aristophanes-Gesamtausgaben überhaupt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung fragt einerseits nach Droysens Stellung zur klassizistischen Übersetzungstradition, andererseits nach seinem Verhältnis zur Aristophanes-Rezeption deutscher Vormärz-Autoren, die damals das politische Potenzial der Komödien neu entdeckten. It was not until late that the comedies of Aristophanes were translated into German. What impeded their reception were the abundance of unclear allusions to day-to-day politics in Athens and obscene jokes. Thus, the translation of Johann Gustav Droysen from 1835/38 was one of the very first German editions of the complete works of Aristophanes. This study aims to investigate Droysen?s’ position in its relation to the classical tradition of translation. On the other hand it tries to elucidate Droysen’s relationship to other authors of the prerevolutionary (Vormärz) era and their reception of Aristophanes - at that time they rediscovered the political potential of the comedies.

Die Studie befasst sich mit Heines komplexer Byron-Rezeption und zeigt, dass der Weltschmerz als bisher dominantes Paradigma des Vergleichs beider Autoren zu kurz greift. Anhand von umfangreichen Textanalysen wird eine Poetik eingreifender Kunst bei Byron und Heine herausgearbeitet, die beide Autoren zwischen 1815 und 1830, also in der Schwellenzeit zwischen Romantik und Realismus, entwickeln. Diese performative Poetik lässt nicht nur Heines Byron-Rezeption in einem neuen Licht erscheinen, sondern präzisiert auch das Verhältnis beider zu (früh )romantischen Positionen. This study explores Heine’s complex reading of Byron and demonstrates the inadequacy of the notion of world-weariness (Weltschmerz) as a dominant paradigm for comparing these two writers. On the basis of comprehensive textual analysis, Alexandra Böhm suggests that between 1815 and 1930, during the threshold period between Romanticism and Realism, both Byron and Heine developed a 0poetics of intervening art0 (Poetik eingreifender Kunst). This performative poetics not only casts Heine’s reading of Byron in a new light but also serves to more precisely situate the relationship of both of these writers to Romantic positions.

    Classicizing Christian poetry has largely been neglected by literary scholars, but has recently been receiving growing attention, especially the poetry written in Latin. One of the objectives of this volume is to redress the balance by allowing more space to discussions of Greek Christian poetry. The contributions collected here ask how Christian poets engage with (and are conscious of) the double reliance of their poetry on two separate systems: on the one hand, the classical poetic models and, on the other, the various genres and sub-genres of Christian prose. Keeping in mind the different settings of the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West, the contributions seek to understand the impact of historical setting on genre, the influence of the paideia shared by authors and audiences, and the continued relevance of traditional categories of literary genre. While our immediate focus is genre, most of the contributions also engage with the ideological ramifications of the transposition of Christian themes into classicizing literature. This volume offers important and original case studies on the reception and appropriation of the classical past and its literary forms by Christian poetry

    Petrarch, the "father of Humanism", has exerted a striking impact on early modern intellectuals. This volume discusses how Petrarch's writings were understood, read and used by intellectuals, writers and artists from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Specialists from various disciplines (Italian, French, Neo-Latin, Dutch, art history, history of science) demonstrate that early modern reception is an extremely variable phenomenon; that it is largely dominated by the various discourses, paradigm's, literary genres, interests, needs and experiences of the users, and to a much lesser degree by the author's text, even if safeguarded with such great care and by such a famous author as in Petrarch's case.     From his earliest publications onwards Pushkin has been the source of inspiration, and imitation, for other writers, as well as composers, painters and, more recently, film-makers. This book seeks to explore the different relationship his followers have sought with the 'founding father' of modern Russian culture. Pushkin's Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin takes a variety of approaches. Some contributors to the collection trace the way Pushkin's works provided the template for the characters and stories which were produced in the first decades after his untimely death in 1837. Others reveal the impact the myths surrounding Pushkin's tragic life were used (and abused) by followers, as well as governments of various hues. Yet other studies explore the very precise ways Pushkin's successors used his texts as source material for their own works. 'Pushkin's Secret': Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin offers a series of fascinating insights into the impact that Alexander Pushkin has had on Russian culture over the last 200 years.     Das Werk Robert Musils wird heute weltweit rezipiert, gerade auch in Ostasien. Diese ostasiatischen Musil-Lektüren stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Sammelbandes. Zum einen wird die Musil-Rezeption in Japan, Korea und China dargestellt; ebenso werden die Einflüsse dieser Rezeption auf die dortigen Literatur- und Kulturentwicklungen hervorgehoben. Dies schließt Überlegungen zur Übersetzung von Musils Texten in diese ostasiatischen Sprachen ein. Zum anderen werden Musil-Interpretationen vorgelegt, die sein Werk in den Kontext transkultureller Fragestellungen einrücken, wobei Bereiche wie z. B.
