    Declamation - the practice of training young men to speak in public by setting them to compose and deliver speeches on fictional legal cases - was central to the Greek and Roman educational systems over many centuries and has been the subject of a recent explosion of scholarly interest. The work of Michael Winterbottom has been seminal in this regard, and the present volume brings together a broad selection of his scholarly articles and reviews published since 1964,0creating an authoritative and accessible resource for this burgeoning field of study. 0The assembled papers focus on two related topics: the rhetorician Quintilian and ancient declamation in practice. Quintilian, who taught rhetoric at Rome in the second half of the first century AD, was the author of the Institutio Oratoria, a key text for Roman educational practice, rhetoric, and literary criticism. Subjects explored in the present collection range widely over not only the establishment and interpretation of the text and its literary and historical context, but also Quintilian's views on inspiration, morality, philosophy, and declamation, of which he was a practitioner. While the volume also offers detailed examinations of the texts and interpretations of a wide range of Latin and Greek authors of declamations, such as Seneca the Elder, Sopatros, and Ennodius, there is a particular focus on two collections wrongly attributed to Quintilian, the so-called 'Minor' and 'Major Declamations'. A major re-assessment of the manuscript tradition of the latter collection is published here for the first time

    Meno della metà dei 12 libri della Institutio oratoria di Quintiliano ha un commento scientifico moderno e fra questi il solo libro III è espressamente dedicato all’ars oratoria. Il presente commento del libro IX viene perciò a colmare almeno in parte una lacuna ben presente agli studiosi dell’opera. Entro l’ampia sezione che Quintiliano riserva all’elocutio, il libro IX ha una sua evidente autonomia, dedicato com’esso è alla trattazione delle figurae, della conlocatio e del ritmo oratorio: argomenti che nel quadro della retorica antica trovano qui la più ampia, articolata e lucida esposizione. Il testo latino, che presenta numerose varianti rispetto alle edizioni precedenti, è affiancato dalla traduzione e seguito da un ampio commento filologico linguistico e dottrinale. Quest’ultimo, con la sua dovizia di rimandi e riferimenti bibliografici, mira soprattutto ad aiutare il lettore, non sempre specialista di retorica, a districarsi fra i vari problemi esegetici posti dal trattato di Quintiliano. *** Weniger als die Hälfte der zwölf Bücher von Quintilians Institutio oratoria verfügt über einen modernen wissenschaftlichen Kommentar. Außerdem ist Buch III erstaunlicherweise das einzige kommentierte Buch der Institutio oratoria, das rhetorische Themen behandelt. Der lang erwartete Kommentar des Buchs IX leistet deshalb einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis von Quintilians Werk. Buch IX weist vor allem in der breiten, der elocutio gewidmeten Sektion einen hohen Grad an Autonomie auf und bietet die umfangreichste und klarste Behandlung der figurae, der conlocatio und des oratorischen Rhythmus in der Antike. Der neu bearbeitete lateinische Text setzt sich durch die berücksichtigten Varianten ab von früheren Editionen. Darüber hinaus liegen eine italienische Übersetzung sowie ein philologischer, sprachlicher und erläuternder Kommentar vor. Insbesondere wendet sich der mit vielen Querverweisen und einer reichen Bibliographie versehene Kommentar an einen Leserkreis von Nicht-Spezialisten der römischen Rhetorik, dem die komplexen exegetischen Probleme des Werkes erklärt werden.****************Less than half of the twelve books of Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria is provided with a modern scientific commentary. What is more, the only commented book of the Institutio oratoria that actually regards rhetoric is book III. The present commentary of book IX is therefore a long-awaited contribution to understanding Quintilian’s oeuvre. Within the wide section that Quintilian devotes to the elocutio, book IX presents significant elements of autonomy and offers the widest, most articulated and clearest treatment of the figurae, the conlocatio and the oratorical rhythm in antiquity. This book offers a new Latin text with numerous variants in comparison with previous editions, an Italian translation and a wide commentary concerning philological, linguistic and cultural aspects. In particular, the commentary, completed with a large number of cross references and a rich bibliography, addresses non-specialists of ancient rhetoric and aims to solve the intricate exegetical problems posed by Quintilian’s book.

    Imitation was central to Roman culture, and a staple of Latin poetry. But it was also fundamental to prose. This book brings together two monuments of the High Empire, Quintilian's Institutio oratoria ('Training of the orator') and Pliny's Epistles, to reveal a spectacular project of textual and ethical imitation. As a young man Pliny had studied with Quintilian. In the Epistles he meticulously transforms and subsumes his teacher's masterpiece, together with poetry and prose ranging from Homer to Tacitus' Dialogus de oratoribus. In teasing apart Pliny's rich intertextual weave, this book reinterprets Quintilian through the eyes of one of his sharpest readers, radically reassesses the Epistles as a work of minute textual artistry, and makes a major intervention in scholarly debates on intertextuality, imitation and rhetorical culture at Rome. The result is a landmark study with far-reaching implications for how we read Latin literature.

    Nach Quintilian gilt das Konzept der Nachahmung für die Geschichte der Kunst und für die Geschichte der Zivilisation. Seit der Renaissance ist die Vorstellung, dass die Kunst die Kunst hervorbringt, eine Selbstverständlichkeit geworden, und die Entwicklung oder der Fortschritt des künstlerischen Geschmacks wurden mit der fortschreitenden Naturerkenntnis und Naturbeherrschung verbunden. Im 16. Jh. wurde eine weitere Idee Quintilians aktualisiert: der schöpferische Mensch strebt über die Nachahmung seiner Vorbilder hinaus; in den Künsten hält er sich also nicht an die Grenzen des 'guten Geschmacks'. Seit dem 18. Jh. gilt die Abweichung von der Norm als wesentlicher Bestandteil der künstlerischen Schöpfung, und seit der Encyclopédie Diderots und d'Alemberts wird das Genie, das sich unerschrocken auf neue Wege und Abwege begibt, entscheidend für die Konstituierung neuen Wissens; angesichts der Vervielfältigung der sozialen, technischen und politischen Innovationsprozesse wurde die individuelle Kreativität für Goethe, Saint-Simon, Tocqueville und Hugo zum wichtigsten Faktor historischer Dynamik.
