    An analysis of the resurgent cultural fascination with Nazism since 1989Why has a fascination with fascism re-emerged after the Cold War? What is its cultural function now, in an era of commemoration? Focusing particularly on the British context, this study offers the first analysis of contemporary popular and literary fiction, film, TV and art exhibitions about Nazis and Nazism. Petra Rau brings this material into dialogue with earlier responses to fascism and demonstrates how, paradoxically, Nazism has been both mediated and mythologised to the extent that it now often replaces a critical engagement with actual, violent history.In 5 thematic chapters on Nazi Noir, Men in Uniform, Vile Bodies, The Good German and Meta-Cinematic Farce, Rau provides close analysis of contemporary novels such as Jason Lutes’ graphic novel series Berlin, historical crime fiction by Philip Kerr and others, Robert Harris’ Fatherland, Ian McEwan’s Black Dogs and Justin Cartwright’s The Song Before It Is Sung; films such as Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards; art installations including Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art, and Fucking Hell by Jake and Dinos Chapman; and Piotr Uklanski’s photo frieze, Untitled (The Nazis).Key Features:Broad interdisciplinary approach which includes literature, film, TV and artWide coverage of popular forms and High ArtComparison with earlier material about fascism which reaches back to the 1930s

    "From its beginnings, some of German film's most prominent genres and directors have focused on the natural world and its transformations by humans. Heimat films, "city symphonies," mountain films, and rubble films all blend the boundary between landscape documentary and fiction film. Yet German film studies has been slow to adopt an environmental focus, concentrating (understandably) on its subject matter's political implications. This book reveals critical connections between German film, sociopolitical context, and environment, showing it to have been a creative catalyst for the social and ecological transformation of the Anthropocene. The book first considers the interplay between German film and environmental history in films and discourses of Heimat. Weimar-era films such as E. A. Dupont's Die Geierwally (1921), Carl Ludwig Achaz-Duisberg's Sprengbagger 1010 (1929), and Phil Jützi's Hunger in Waldenburg (1929) document and create a forum for discussing environmental change. The book then looks at film as a visual archive of and catalyst for infrastructure development, focusing on Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927), the mountain films of Arnold Fanck, and the Berlin films Stadt der Millionen (Adolf Trotz, 1925), Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt (Walter Ruttmann, 1927), and Menschen am Sonntag (1930). Nazi-era and postwar films are also examined. By exploring German film history alongside environmental history and theory, this book provides a case study of the power of film within processes of environmental transformation"--

Phenomena of precarization (such as underemployment, indebtedness, deaths of despair) tend to be causally linked to the rise of neoliberalism as a strategy of governance that redistributes risk to the already vulnerable. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film broadens the scope beyond this narrow definition of precarity, using Germany as a national case study, to examine the historical genesis of precarity, its evolution from 19th-century industrial modernity to the present, and its reflections and reconfigurations in artistic production, in particular with relation to work, gender, and sexuality. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film probes the concept of "representation" in its full two senses, in the sense of "artistic depiction" and in the sense of "political proxy and advocacy." In linking economic discourses to cultural production, this volume shows how culture can reveal the gap between a society’s narrative about itself and the ways in which precarity shapes experience and consciousness."

    Welche Rolle spielen Spielfilme für unsere Vorstellungen von Geschichte? Welche Interessen stehen dahinter? Am Beispiel niederländischer und deutscher Widerstandsspielfilme zeigt der Autor, wie und warum es diesen lange unterschätzten Filmen gelang, den in der öffentlichen Erinnerungskultur beider Länder etablierten Narrativen konkurrierende Interpretationen von Geschichte gegenüberzustellen. Umfangreiche neue Quellenfunde zur Produktions- und Rezeptionsgeschichte rücken die bisherige Forschung zu den behandelten Filmen in ein neues Licht. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Forschungsdesigns zeigt die vergleichende Studie, wie sehr vor allem die lange als "Rehabilitationsfilme" diskreditierten bundesdeutschen Widerstandsfilme durchaus gesellschaftlichen Zündstoff enthielten. Damit durchbrachen sie stellenweise die erinnerungskulturelle Windstille der 1950er Jahre und lieferten einen Beitrag zur Neuverhandlung etablierter Geschichtsbilder What part do feature films play in creating our notions of history?     "From its beginnings, some of German film's most prominent genres and directors have focused on the natural world and its transformations by humans. Heimat films, "city symphonies," mountain films, and rubble films all blend the boundary between landscape documentary and fiction film. Yet German film studies has been slow to adopt an environmental focus, concentrating (understandably) on its subject matter's political implications. This book reveals critical connections between German film, sociopolitical context, and environment, showing it to have been a creative catalyst for the social and ecological transformation of the Anthropocene. The book first considers the interplay between German film and environmental history in films and discourses of Heimat. Weimar-era films such as E. A. Dupont's Die Geierwally (1921), Carl Ludwig Achaz-Duisberg's Sprengbagger 1010 (1929), and Phil Jützi's Hunger in Waldenburg (1929) document and create a forum for discussing environmental change. The book then looks at film as a visual archive of and catalyst for infrastructure development, focusing on Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927), the mountain films of Arnold Fanck, and the Berlin films Stadt der Millionen (Adolf Trotz, 1925), Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt (Walter Ruttmann, 1927), and Menschen am Sonntag (1930). Nazi-era and postwar films are also examined. By exploring German film history alongside environmental history and theory, this book provides a case study of the power of film within processes of environmental transformation"--

    An analysis of the resurgent cultural fascination with Nazism since 1989Why has a fascination with fascism re-emerged after the Cold War? What is its cultural function now, in an era of commemoration? Focusing particularly on the British context, this study offers the first analysis of contemporary popular and literary fiction, film, TV and art exhibitions about Nazis and Nazism.     "From its beginnings, some of German film's most prominent genres and directors have focused on the natural world and its transformations by humans. Heimat films, "city symphonies," mountain films, and rubble films all blend the boundary between landscape documentary and fiction film. Yet German film studies has been slow to adopt an environmental focus, concentrating (understandably) on its subject matter's political implications. This book reveals critical connections between German film, sociopolitical context, and environment, showing it to have been a creative catalyst for the social and ecological transformation of the Anthropocene. The book first considers the interplay between German film and environmental history in films and discourses of Heimat. Weimar-era films such as E. A. Dupont's Die Geierwally (1921), Carl Ludwig Achaz-Duisberg's Sprengbagger 1010 (1929), and Phil Jützi's Hunger in Waldenburg (1929) document and create a forum for discussing environmental change. The book then looks at film as a visual archive of and catalyst for infrastructure development, focusing on Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927), the mountain films of Arnold Fanck, and the Berlin films Stadt der Millionen (Adolf Trotz, 1925), Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt (Walter Ruttmann, 1927), and Menschen am Sonntag (1930). Nazi-era and postwar films are also examined. By exploring German film history alongside environmental history and theory, this book provides a case study of the power of film within processes of environmental transformation"--

    "Since 2000, much attention has been paid to the increase in social precarity in Europe and the US. Phenomena of precarization (such as underemployment, indebtedness, deaths of despair) tend to be causally linked to the rise of neoliberalism as a strategy of governance that redistributes risk to the already vulnerable. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film broadens the scope beyond this narrow definition of precarity, using Germany as a national case study, to examine the historical genesis of precarity, its evolution from 19th-century industrial modernity to the present, and its reflections and reconfigurations in artistic production, in particular with relation to work, gender, and sexuality. Representing Social Precarity in German Literature and Film probes the concept of "representation" in its full two senses, in the sense of "artistic depiction" and in the sense of "political proxy and advocacy." In linking economic discourses to cultural production, this volume shows how culture can reveal the gap between a society’s narrative about itself and the ways in which precarity shapes experience and consciousness."
