    The enormous global demand for smartphones in recent years has created a new global tech cycle. In 2016 alone, global smartphone sales reached close to 1.5 billion, one for every fifth person on earth. In turn, this has engendered complex and evolving supply chains across Asia. We show that the new tech cycle cannot be captured by standard seasonality, but depends on smartphone product release dates. Decomposing cycle from trend, we also show that the sale of smartphones may have peaked in late 2015. Asia, however, continues to gain in importance as the global tech manufacturer

    One-fifth of the world's population lives in countries affected by fragility, violence and conflict, impeding long-term economic growth. However, little is known about how firms respond to local changes in security, partly because of the difficulty of measuring firm activity in these settings. This paper presents a novel methodology for observing private sector activity using mobile phone metadata. Using Afghanistan as the empirical setting, the analysis combines mobile phone data from over 2,300 firms with data from several other sources to develop and validate measures of firm location, size, and economic activity. Combining these new measures of firm activity with geocoded data on violent events, the paper investigates how the private sector in Afghanistan responds to insecurity. The findings indicate that firms reduce presence in districts following major increases in violence, that these effects persist for up to six months, and that larger firms are more responsive to violence. The paper concludes with a discussion of potential mechanisms, firms' strategic adaptations, and implications for policymakers

    Mobile phone, PC, AV player, radio, web browser - a diverse range of media content and platforms converge in the smartphone. The basis for this is inevitably formed by media technological forms of production. Then there are the design implications - such as the user interface design or interactive apps - which produce their visual appearance through their interaction with the upstream, 'invisible' technology. The aesthetics of smartphones themselves, however - understood as the possibility of their perception as media - has so far not been examined. The volume takes on this desideratum from a transdisciplinary perspective for the first time Mobiltelefon, PC, AV-Player, Radio, Webbrowser - im Smartphone konvergieren vielfältige Medieninhalte und -phänomene. Zwangsläufig bilden medientechnologische Produktionsformen die Basis hierfür. Hinzu kommen gestalterische Implikationen, die im Umgang mit der vorgeschalteten, »unsichtbaren« Technik deren Optik hervorbringen: etwa das User Interface Design oder interaktive Applikationen. Die Ästhetik des Smartphones selbst jedoch - verstanden als dessen mediale Wahrnehmungsmöglichkeiten - ist bislang nicht untersucht worden.     We examine the employment effects of 3G mobile internet expansion in developing countries. We find that 3G significantly increases the labor force participation rate of women and the employment rates of both men and women. Our results suggest that 3G affects the type of jobs and there is a distinct gender dimension to these effects. Men transition away from unpaid agricultural work into operating small agricultural enterprises, while women take more unpaid jobs, especially in agriculture, and operate more small businesses in all sectors. Both men and women are more likely to work in wage jobs in the service sector
