    In the postcolonial reassessment of history, the themes of colonialism, decolonisation and individual and collective memory have always been intertwined, but it is only recently that the transcultural turn in memory studies has enabled proper dialogue between memory studies and postcolonial studies. This volume explores the synergies and tensions between memory studies and postcolonial studies across literatures and media from Europe, Africa and the Americas, and intersections with Asia. It makes a unique contribution to this growing international and interdisciplinary field by considering an unprecedented range of languages and sources that promotes dialogue across comparative literature, English and American studies, media studies, history and art history, and modern languages (French, German, Greek, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian-Croatian, Spanish). Combining theoretical discussion with innovative case studies, the chapters consider various postcolonial politics of memory (with a focus on Africa); diasporic, traumatic and 'multidirectional memory' (M. Rothberg) in postcolonial perspective; performative and linguistic aspects of postcolonial memory; and transcultural memoryscapes ranging from the Black Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, from overseas colonialism to the intra-European legacies of Habsburg, Ottoman and Russian/Soviet imperialism. This far-reaching enquiry promotes comparative postcolonial studies as a means of creating more integrated frames of reference for research and teaching on the interface between memory and postcolonialism.

    Die vorliegende Monografie untersucht die diskursive Herstellung von Emotionen im Kontext postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken in Deutschland und Frankreich. Beide Länder sehen sich seit den 1990er Jahren mit wachsenden Forderungen konfrontiert, ihre kolonialen Vergangenheiten anzuerkennen und begangene Verbrechen wiedergutzumachen. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass emotionale Zuschreibungen die Bedeutung der Vergangenheit für die Gegenwart legitimieren bzw. delegitimieren, fragt die Autorin danach, welche Emotionen in den medialen sowie politischen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Algerienkrieg in Frankreich und dem Völkermord an den OvaHerero und Nama in Deutschland produziert werden. Die transnationale Vergleichsperspektive deutscher und französischer postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken zeigt die emotionalen 'Verstrickungen' zwischen beiden Ländern auf und betrachtet das nationalstaatliche Erinnerungshandeln zugleich vor dem Hintergrund globaler Erinnerungstendenzen. Die Arbeit weist somit über die analysierten Fallstudien hinaus, indem die Dominanz vermeintlich 'rationaler'Wissensproduktion in westlichen Gesellschaften infrage gestellt und ein Beitrag zu einer Provinzialisierung postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken geleistet wird. Emotions such as guilt, shame, and remorse are often invoked to justify coming to terms with historical crimes. Taking the Algerian War in France and the genocide of the OvaHerero and Nama in Germany as examples, this book analyzes how emotions are discursively produced in postcolonial memory politics and how these enable or prevent a recognition of the "suffering of the Other".

In particular, there is need for a systematic exploration of ancient memory and its use as a critical and methodological tool for delving into ancient literature. The present volume provides just such an approach, theorising the use and role of memory in Graeco-Roman thought and literature, and building on the background of memory studies. The volume’s contributors apply theoretical models such as memoryscapes, civic and cultural memory, and memory loss to a range of authors, from Homeric epic to Senecan drama, and from historiography to Cicero’s recollections of performances. The chapters are divided into four sections according to the main perspective taken. These are: 1) the Mechanics of Memory, 2) Collective memory, 3) Female Memory, and 4) Oblivion. This modern approach to ancient memory will be useful for scholars working across the range of Greek and Roman literature, as well as for students, and a broader interdisciplinary audience interested in the intersection of memory studies and Classics

    Die vorliegende Monografie untersucht die diskursive Herstellung von Emotionen im Kontext postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken in Deutschland und Frankreich. Beide Länder sehen sich seit den 1990er Jahren mit wachsenden Forderungen konfrontiert, ihre kolonialen Vergangenheiten anzuerkennen und begangene Verbrechen wiedergutzumachen. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass emotionale Zuschreibungen die Bedeutung der Vergangenheit für die Gegenwart legitimieren bzw. delegitimieren, fragt die Autorin danach, welche Emotionen in den medialen sowie politischen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Algerienkrieg in Frankreich und dem Völkermord an den OvaHerero und Nama in Deutschland produziert werden. Die transnationale Vergleichsperspektive deutscher und französischer postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken zeigt die emotionalen ‚Verstrickungen‘ zwischen beiden Ländern auf und betrachtet das nationalstaatliche Erinnerungshandeln zugleich vor dem Hintergrund globaler Erinnerungstendenzen. Die Arbeit weist somit über die analysierten Fallstudien hinaus, indem die Dominanz vermeintlich ‚rationaler‘ Wissensproduktion in westlichen Gesellschaften infrage gestellt und ein Beitrag zu einer Provinzialisierung postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken geleistet wird

Taking the Algerian War in France and the genocide of the OvaHerero and Nama in Germany as examples, this book analyzes how emotions are discursively produced in postcolonial memory politics and how these enable or prevent a recognition of the "suffering of the Other"

    Although the recent ‘memory boom’ has led to increasing interdisciplinary interest, there is a significant gap relating to the examination of this topic in Classics. In particular, there is need for a systematic exploration of ancient memory and its use as a critical and methodological tool for delving into ancient literature. The present volume provides just such an approach, theorising the use and role of memory in Graeco-Roman thought and literature, and building on the background of memory studies. The volume’s contributors apply theoretical models such as memoryscapes, civic and cultural memory, and memory loss to a range of authors, from Homeric epic to Senecan drama, and from historiography to Cicero’s recollections of performances. The chapters are divided into four sections according to the main perspective taken. These are: 1) the Mechanics of Memory, 2) Collective memory, 3) Female Memory, and 4) Oblivion. This modern approach to ancient memory will be useful for scholars working across the range of Greek and Roman literature, as well as for students, and a broader interdisciplinary audience interested in the intersection of memory studies and Classics.

    In the postcolonial reassessment of history, the themes of colonialism, decolonisation and individual and collective memory have always been intertwined, but it is only recently that the transcultural turn in memory studies has enabled proper dialogue between memory studies and postcolonial studies. This volume explores the synergies and tensions between memory studies and postcolonial studies across literatures and media from Europe, Africa and the Americas, and intersections with Asia. It makes a unique contribution to this growing international and interdisciplinary field by considering an unprecedented range of languages and sources that promotes dialogue across comparative literature, English and American studies, media studies, history and art history, and modern languages (French, German, Greek, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian-Croatian, Spanish). Combining theoretical discussion with innovative case studies, the chapters consider various postcolonial politics of memory (with a focus on Africa); diasporic, traumatic and 'multidirectional memory' (M. Rothberg) in postcolonial perspective; performative and linguistic aspects of postcolonial memory; and transcultural memoryscapes ranging from the Black Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, from overseas colonialism to the intra-European legacies of Habsburg, Ottoman and Russian/Soviet imperialism. This far-reaching enquiry promotes comparative postcolonial studies as a means of creating more integrated frames of reference for research and teaching on the interface between memory and postcolonialism

In particular, there is need for a systematic exploration of ancient memory and its use as a critical and methodological tool for delving into ancient literature. The present volume provides just such an approach, theorising the use and role of memory in Graeco-Roman thought and literature, and building on the background of memory studies. The volume’s contributors apply theoretical models such as memoryscapes, civic and cultural memory, and memory loss to a range of authors, from Homeric epic to Senecan drama, and from historiography to Cicero’s recollections of performances. The chapters are divided into four sections according to the main perspective taken. These are: 1) the Mechanics of Memory, 2) Collective memory, 3) Female Memory, and 4) Oblivion. This modern approach to ancient memory will be useful for scholars working across the range of Greek and Roman literature, as well as for students, and a broader interdisciplinary audience interested in the intersection of memory studies and Classics

    Die vorliegende Monografie untersucht die diskursive Herstellung von Emotionen im Kontext postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken in Deutschland und Frankreich. Beide Länder sehen sich seit den 1990er Jahren mit wachsenden Forderungen konfrontiert, ihre kolonialen Vergangenheiten anzuerkennen und begangene Verbrechen wiedergutzumachen. Ausgehend von der Annahme, dass emotionale Zuschreibungen die Bedeutung der Vergangenheit für die Gegenwart legitimieren bzw. delegitimieren, fragt die Autorin danach, welche Emotionen in den medialen sowie politischen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Algerienkrieg in Frankreich und dem Völkermord an den OvaHerero und Nama in Deutschland produziert werden. Die transnationale Vergleichsperspektive deutscher und französischer postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken zeigt die emotionalen 'Verstrickungen' zwischen beiden Ländern auf und betrachtet das nationalstaatliche Erinnerungshandeln zugleich vor dem Hintergrund globaler Erinnerungstendenzen. Die Arbeit weist somit über die analysierten Fallstudien hinaus, indem die Dominanz vermeintlich 'rationaler'Wissensproduktion in westlichen Gesellschaften infrage gestellt und ein Beitrag zu einer Provinzialisierung postkolonialer Erinnerungspolitiken geleistet wird. Emotions such as guilt, shame, and remorse are often invoked to justify coming to terms with historical crimes. Taking the Algerian War in France and the genocide of the OvaHerero and Nama in Germany as examples, this book analyzes how emotions are discursively produced in postcolonial memory politics and how these enable or prevent a recognition of the "suffering of the Other".

    Zusammenfassung This volume explores how narratives and iconographic codes in literature, art, music, material culture and social, political, and economic discourses were appropriated and thereby - sometimes radically - transformed by religious agents, and how religious narrations, discourses and iconographic practices were reimagined and used (up to radical deconstruction) in non-religious contexts as well as in different or transformed religious contexts. Religious appropriation is thereby conceived as practice of memory, drawing on reused - and creating transformed - narrative and visual spaces of imagination. The dimension of memory will contribute to a more differentiated typology of practices of appropriation, their forms, functions and functionalisation. Agency and power relations will be important factors in the individual contributions of this trans-disciplinary volume that links approaches from memory studies, religious history, literary studies, and art history.
