    Campus Medius erforscht und erweitert die Möglichkeiten der digitalen Kartografie in den Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften. Simon Ganahl dokumentiert die Entwicklung des Projekts von einer historischen Fallstudie zur Mapping-Plattform. Ausgehend von der Frage, was eine mediale Erfahrung ist, werden die Konzepte des Dispositivs und des Akteur-Netzwerks in ein Datenmodell übersetzt. Als Labor dient ein Zeit-Raum von 24 Stunden im Mai 1933 in Wien, der von einer austrofaschistischen »Türkenbefreiungsfeier« geprägt ist. Diese Massenkundgebung wird multiperspektivisch kartografiert und in medienhistorische Netzwerke eingeflochten, die sich vom 17. Jahrhundert bis in unsere Gegenwart aufspannen.

    Campus Medius explores and expands the possibilities of digital cartography in cultural and media studies. Simon Ganahl documents the development of the project from a historical case study to a mapping platform. Based on the question of what a media experience is, the concepts of the apparatus (dispositif) and the actor-network are translated into a data model. A time-space of twenty-four hours in Vienna in May 1933, marked by a so-called »Turks Deliverance Celebration« (Türkenbefreiungsfeier), serves as an empirical laboratory. This Austrofascist rally is mapped from multiple perspectives and woven into media-historical networks, spanning from the seventeenth century up to the present day.

    Begreift man Oswald de Andrades »Anthropophagisches Manifest« (1928) nicht nur als literarisches Werk, sondern auch als Beitrag zur postkolonialen Theorie avant la lettre, so ergeben sich neue Perspektiven auf die brasilianische Kultur.Entlang postkolonialer Strategien kultureller Kannibalisierung zeichnet Peter W. Schulze bisher kaum beachtete Verbindungslinien zwischen dem Modernismo und dem Tropicalismo nach. Vor einem breiten kulturhistorischen Hintergrund stellen Detailanalysen tropikalistischer Werke deren Bedeutung für den Paradigmenwechsel vom antikolonialen zum postkolonialen Diskurs heraus.Ausgezeichnet mit dem Georg-Rudolf-Lind-Förderpreis für Lusitanistik Understanding Oswald de Andrade's Manifesto Antropofago (English title: Cannibal Manifesto, 1928) not only as an aesthetic production, but also as a postcolonial theory construction, opens up new perspectives on Brazilian culture, which - after extensive cultural and historical contextualization - render the manifesto fertile ground for an understanding of Tropicalismo. Peter W. Schulze's interdisciplinary investigation for the first time works out in detail the complex intramedial and intermedial references of the manifesto and follows the postcolonial dimensions of tropicalist movies. The study is thus to be understood as a contribution to postcolonial studies

    Wenn in wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen etwas sichtbar wird, dann häufig, weil es in experimentellen Verfahren sichtbar gemacht worden ist. Die operative »Sichtbarmachung« erlaubt neue Perspektiven auf die disjunktive Verschränktheit von Wissenschafts- und Mediengeschichte. Eine Archäologie des Sichtbaren - wie sie etwa am Beispiel mikrofotografischer Verfahren der Bakteriologie nachvollzogen werden kann - betont die materiell-diskursive Konfiguration von Wissensproduktion. Die erzeugten »epistemischen Bilder« fungieren demnach als Relais zwischen Erkenntnis und Sichtbarkeit. Sebastian Scholz nähert sich dieser komplexen Konstellation mit dem Ziel, »das Sichtbare« zu problematisieren und Potentiale einer operativen Medien-Onto-Epistemologie aufzuzeigen.

Mizrahi, an Egyptian Jew with Italian nationality, established himself as a prolific director of popular comedies and musicals in the 1930s and 1940s. As a studio owner and producer, Mizrahi promoted the idea that developing a local cinema industry was a project of national importance. Togo Mizrahi and the Making of Egyptian Cinema integrates film analysis with film history to tease out the cultural and political implications of Mizrahi’s work. His movies, Starr argues, subvert dominant notions of race, gender, and nationality through their playful—and queer—use of masquerade and mistaken identity.     Since antiquity it has been known that without the freedom to speak, and later to publish, the road to fanaticism and totalitarianism lies wide open. This book focuses on how the 'press' reacted, when press freedom was under strain in number of cases in the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Contemporary literature on the freedom of the press has its focus on the role of the press in relation to democracy; how media influences democracy, how the political and the ethical aspects are managed etc. This book is on the one hand part of this central discourse. On the other hand, it attempts to broaden views by focusing on the historical and contemporary experiences, when press freedom was under strain in significant periods since the 1930s. Also, its geographical scope is broader than most books, and it brings together experienced journalists and known academics adding to the dynamism of the discussion and challenging the reader to find his own position concerning censorship, self-censorship and press ethics.

    Swarming has become a fundamental cultural technique related to dynamic processes and an effective metaphor for the collaborative efforts of society. This book examines the media history of swarm research and its significance to current socio-technological processes. It shows that the hype about collective intelligence is based on a reciprocal computerization of biology and biologization of computer science: After decades of painstaking biological observations in the ocean, experiments in aquariums, and mathematical model-making, it was swarms-inspired computer simulation which provided biological researchers with enduring knowledge about animal collectives. At the same time, a turn to biological principles of self-organization made it possible to adapt to unclearly delineated sets of problems and clarify the operation of opaque systems - from logistics to architecture, or from crowd control to robot collectives. As zootechnologies, swarms offer performative, synthetic, and approximate solutions in cases where analytical approaches are doomed to fail.

    Von Georges Méliès über Alfred Hitchcock bis hin zu David Lynch - das Motiv der Box taucht in der Filmgeschichte immer wieder auf. Dabei konfrontiert es die BetrachterInnen mit einem medialen Paradox: Die Box ist sichtbar und umschließt zugleich einen Raum, der verborgen bleibt. Als Motiv birgt jede Box eine eigene Geschichte, die sich im Laufe des Films entfaltet. Damit ermöglicht sie eine kritische Perspektive auf das, was scheinbar selbsterklärend vor unseren Augen liegt. Ausgehend von konkreten Filmanalysen untersucht Nepomuk Zettl räumliche Einschlüsse im Film auf ihre narrativen, ästhetischen und epistemologischen Dimensionen und legt damit die erste Studie zu diesem omnipräsenten, aber bislang übersehenen Motiv vor.
