    'Jihad' is a highly charged word. Often mistranslated as 'Holy War', it has become synonymous with terrorism. Current political events have entirely failed to take account of the subtlety and complexity of jihad. Like many concepts with a long history, different cultural ideas have influenced the religious aspects of jihad. As a result its original meaning has been adapted, modified and destabilized - never more than at the present time. How does jihad manifest itself in Muslims' everyday lives? What impact has 9/11 and its backlash had on jihad? By observing the current crisis of identity among ordinary Muslims, this timely book explores why, and in what circumstances Muslims speak of jihad. In the end, jihad is what Muslims say it is. Marranci offers us a nuanced and sophisticated anthropological understanding of Muslims' lives far beyond the predictable cliches.

    "Based on seven years of original research, this book contains one of the most detailed and comprehensive assessments of 'home-grown' Islamist terrorism (HGIT) in the US and UK to date. Beginning with an examination of the development of militant networks during the 1980s and 1990s, it traces the origins of HGIT and highlights the significance of these early experiences in different countries for shaping the future trajectory of the threat. The book also examines the range of motivations for violent jihad in the West, suggesting a composite theoretical model that specifies three 'necessary' conditions for involvement and challenges popular explanations for differential rates of terrorism which emphasize socioeconomic factors. The book analyzes the background and operational activities of nearly 800 American and British jihadis who mobilized between 1980 and September 11th 2013, including factors such as mental health, education, processes of radicalization, leadership, use of the Internet, sources of funding and links to foreign terrorist organizations. This analysis is then complemented with an examination of how these individuals have been dealt with by the respective security services. From the first proponents of 'global jihad' to the recent wave of volunteers inspired by events in the Middle East, this book provides an extensive yet lucid analysis of one of the greatest security concerns facing America and Great Britain today.     Abstract: Aus Österreich sind - im europäischen Vergleich und gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl - überdurchschnittlich viele Foreign Fighter in die Konfliktgebiete nach Syrien und in den Irak ausgereist. Der Radikalisierungsprozess dieser Foreign Fighter verläuft auf der sozio-psychologischen Ebene ähnlich wie der Radikalisierungsprozess bei anderen Formen des Extremismus; ein wesentlicher, begünstigender Faktor ist dabei immer das Vorhandensein sozialer Netzwerke. Aufgrund der Vielfalt möglicher Verbindungen auf der Identitäts- und Affektivebene, scheinen Diasporaverbindungen in diesen Netzwerken auch eine Rolle zu spielen. Diese Erkenntnis sollte jedoch nicht in Risikofaktoren übersetzt, oder zu einer Ursache erklärt werden, da dies nicht nur wenig hilfreich bei der Erklärung des Phänomens ist, sondern auch Communities stigmatisiert. In diesem Arbeitspapier untersuchen wir die Diasporaaspekte von Radikalisierungsprozessen in Österreich, mit besonderem Fokus auf Foreign Fighter. Wir formulieren

    "Through the creation of post-colonial citizenship, India adopted a hybridisation of specific secular and western conception of citizenship. In this democratic framework, Indian Muslims are observed on how they make use of the spaces and channels to accommodate their Islamic identity within a secular one. This book analyses how the socio-political context shapes citizens' perceptions of multiple variables, such as their sense of political efficacy, agency, conception of citizenship rights and belief in democracy. Based on extensive surveys and interviews and through presenting and investigating the various meanings of jihād, the author explores the usage of non-Eurocentric conceptual approaches to the study of postcolonial and Muslim societies, in particular the meaning it carries in the psyche of the Muslim community. She argues that through means of argumentative and spiritual jihād, Indian Muslims fight their battle towards a realisation of citizenship ideals despite the unfavourable conditions of intra and inter community conflicts.
