    The volume tells us about the close relationship between heaven and earth, between the extraordinary and the everyday, between faith and science, highlighted by the countless episodes of piety that allow us to retrace history and grasp its transformations, starting from the lived life of thousands of protagonists. In fact, the painted votive tablets prove to be an exceptional vector for reproducing and transmitting the values of the community: family, homeland, work, care for animals and the territory, use of means of transport and old and new technologies. In the ex-voto the cycles of life and seasons unfold and the impact on them of small and large natural or social disasters that recur over time with impressive regularity, unfortunately we find ourselves unprepared each time. In dealing with risks and calamities of all kinds, ex-votos women and men look upwards - with great dignity - asking them to survive, persist and replicate themselves as biological entities and cultural entities. The long sequence of events narrated in the ex-votos constitutes a sort of DNA of our nation, indispensable for shaping the country's future. Also for this reason, painted ex-votos must be detected, filed, preserved, protected, valued, studied and brought to the attention of the general public, as this volume proposes.

    Die Lektüre des mittelalterlichen 'Nibelungenlieds' wurde seit seiner Wiederentdeckung im 18. Jahrhundert mit Vorstellungen von 'deutscher Kultur' und vom 'deutschen Volk' überblendet. Einen Höhepunkt dieser nationalistisch ausgerichteten Lektüre bildet die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, in der Rückgriffe auf die Nibelungen als Identifikationsmuster Hochkonjunktur hatten. Im Anschluss an Jacob Grimms Begriffsprägung des 'Nibelungischen' gehen die Beiträge des Bandes der umfassenden 'Nibelungisierung' der Gesellschaft in populären und wissenschaftlichen Diskursen zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus nach. Dabei wird das 'Nibelungische' als Zeichenvorrat begriffen, der in politisch instabilen Zeiten zur Aktivierung bereitsteht. Neuere Wiedererzählungen zeigen, wie mit dem Nibelungenstoff bis heute umgegangen wird und in welcher Weise 'Nibelungisches' nach wie vor wirksam ist

    Abstract: Life Is Elsewhere is a reflective introspection into the life of a young poet and of his demanding mother. Kindera depicts the mother as a woman feeling unworthy of love who relishes the fantasy of being Jaromil's ethereal mother in order to escape from her actual bodily deprivation and resolve her psychological tensions. On the other hand, Jaromil's portrait as a young poet involves his consonant, in Lacan’s terms, imaginary and symbolic identifications which lead him to an unending alienation in the context of a socialist system. Reading the novel in the light of Bakhtin's ideas on parody and its polyphonic nature illuminates Kundera's parodic treatment of motherhood, poetic, political and historical discourses, and especially his use of parody as a political means to oppose the domineering voice of totalitarianism.     The Credibility Revolution advances quantitative research designs intended to identify causal effects from observed data. The ensuing emphasis on internal validity however has enabled the neglect of construct and external validity. This article develops a framework we call causal specification. The framework formally demonstrates the joint necessity of assumptions regarding internal, construct and external validity for causal generalization. Indeed, the lack of any of the three types of validity undermines the Credibility Revolution's own goal to understand causality deductively. Without assumptions regarding construct validity, one cannot accurately label the cause or outcome. Without assumptions regarding external validity, one cannot label the conditions enabling the cause to have an effect. These assumptions ultimately are founded on qualitative and theoretical understandings of a causal process. As a result, causal specification clarifies the central role of qualitative research in underwriting deductive understandings of causality in quantitative research.

    This paper studies semiparametric versions of the classical sample selection model (Heckman (1976, 1979)) without exclusion restrictions. We extend the analysis in Honor'e and Hu (2020) by allowing for parameter heterogeneity and derive implications of this model. We also consider models that allow for heteroskedasticity and briefly discuss other extensions. The key ideas are illustrated in a simple wage regression for females. We find that the derived implications of a semiparametric version of Heckman's classical sample selection model are consistent with the data for women with no college education, but strongly rejected for women with a college degree or more.

    Public discord between those vaccinated and those unvaccinated for COVID-19 has intensified globally. Theories of intergroup relations propose that identifying with one's social group plays a key role in the perceptions and behaviors that fuel intergroup conflict. We test whether identification with one's vaccination status is associated with current societal polarization. The study draws on panel data from samples of vaccinated (n = 3,267) and unvaccinated (n = 2,038) respondents in Germany and Austria that were collected in December 2021, February, March, and July 2022. The findings confirm that vaccination status identification (VSI) explains substantial variance in a range of polarizing attitudes and behaviors. VSI was also related to higher psychological reactance toward mandatory vaccination policies among the unvaccinated. Higher levels of VSI reduced the gap between intended and actual counter-behaviors over time by the unvaccinated. VSI appears to be an important measure for predicting behavioral responses to vaccination policies.
