    Die Frage »Wie wollen wir in Zukunft leben?« ist in aller Munde. Aber in welcher Welt leben wir eigentlich jetzt gerade? So banal es klingt: Es gehört zum Schwierigsten, Abstand zu gewinnen, um das eigene Jetzt klarer zu sehen. Und gerade in den aktuellen Krisenzeiten kommt es darauf an, besser zu verstehen, was vor sich geht. Deshalb wiederholt die Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung - 40 Jahre nach den »Stichworten zur geistigen Situation der Zeit« - das Experiment nochmals, wie aus verschiedenen disziplinären Richtungen interessante Perspektiven auf unsere Gegenwart gewonnen werden können.     Why, during the last two hundred years, when critical achievement in the field of tragedy has been outstanding, has there been little creative practice? David Lenson examines the work of various writers not ordinarily placed in the tragic tradition-among them, Kleist, Goethe, Melville, Yeats, and Faulkner-and suggests that the tradition of tragedy does continue in genres other than drama, that is, in the novel and even in lyric poetry.The notion of tragedy's migration from one genre to others indicates, however, rather sweeping modifications in the theory of tragedy. Achilles' Choice proposes a structural model for tragic criticism that synthesizes the almost scientific theories predominant since World War II with the irrationalist theories they replaced.Originally published in 1975.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Breaking with the practice of close reading of individual texts, Frye seeks to describe a common basis for understanding the full range of literary forms by examining archetypes, genres, poetic language, and the relations among the text, the reader, and society. Using a dazzling array of examples, he argues that understanding "the structure of literature as a total form" also allows us to see the profoundly liberating effect literature can have.

    Drawn from the acclaimed New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, the articles in this concise new reference book provide a complete survey of the poetic history and practice in every major national literature or cultural tradition in the world. As with the parent volume, which has sold over 10,000 copies since it was first published in 1993, the intended audience is general readers, journalists, students, teachers, and researchers. The editor's principle of selection was balance, and his goal was to embrace in a structured and reasoned way the diversity of poetry as it is known across the globe today. In compiling material on 106 cultures in 92 national literatures, the book gives full coverage to Indo-European poetries (all the major Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, as well as other obscure ones such as Hittite), the ancient middle Eastern poetries (Hebrew, Persian, Sumerian, and Assyro-Babylonian), subcontinental Indian poetries (the widest linguistic diversity), Asian and Pacific poetries (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mongolian, and half a dozen others), continental American poetries (all the modern Western cultures and native Indian in North, Central, and South American regions), and African poetries (ancient and emergent, oral and written).

In this beautifully written book, Jeff Deutsch-the director of Chicago's Seminary Co-op Bookstores, one of the finest bookstores in the world-pays loving tribute to one of our most important and endangered civic institutions. He considers how qualities like space, time, abundance, and community find expression in a good bookstore.     Als Medien- und insbesondere Fernsehphänomen hat Harald Schmidt die TV-Kultur im deutschsprachigen Raum maßgeblich beeinflusst. So ist es etwa der Harald Schmidt Show gelungen, halbironische Sprechweisen diskursfähig zu machen, die sich bis in die Gegenwart der Social Media verfolgen lassen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes untersuchen vor diesem Hintergrund die »Methode Harald Schmidt«, d.h. die Unterminierung gängiger sozialer Vorstellungen bei gleichzeitiger Affirmation derselben. Die zentrale These lautet: Harald Schmidt hat grundlegende Voraussetzungen dafür geschaffen, eine weitestgehend neue Populärkultur ästhetisch wie kulturpraktisch zu etablieren.
