    "Exploration was a central and perhaps defining aspect of the West's encounters with other peoples and lands. Rather than reproduce celebratory narratives of individual heroism and national glory, this volume focuses on exploration's instrumental role in shaping a European sense of exceptionalism and its iconic importance in defining the terms of cultural engagement with other peoples. In chapters offering broad geographic range, the contributors address many of the key themes of recent research on exploration, including exploration's contribution to European imperial expansion, Western scientific knowledge, Enlightenment ideas and practices, and metropolitan print culture. They reassess indigenous peoples' responses upon first contacts with European explorers, their involvement as intermediaries in the operations of expeditions, and the complications that their prior knowledge posed for European claims of discovery. Underscoring that exploration must be seen as a process of mediation between representation and reality, this book provides a fresh and accessible introduction to the ongoing reinterpretation of exploration's role in the making of the modern world"--

    Critics of American exceptionalism usually view it as a destructive force eroding the radical energies of social movements and aesthetic practices. In A Desire Called America, Christian P. Haines confronts a troubling paradox: Some of the most provocative political projects in the United States are remarkably invested in American exceptionalism. Riding a strange current of U.S. literature that draws on American exceptionalism only to overturn it in the name of utopian desire, Haines reveals a tradition of viewing the United States as a unique and exemplary political model while rejecting exceptionalism’s commitments to nationalism, capitalism, and individualism. Through Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, William S. Burroughs, and Thomas Pynchon, Haines brings to light a radically different version of the American dream—one in which political subjects value an organization of social life that includes democratic self-governance, egalitarian cooperation, and communal property.A Desire Called America brings utopian studies and the critical discourse of biopolitics to bear upon each other, suggesting that utopia might be less another place than our best hope for confronting authoritarianism, neoliberalism, and a resurgent exclusionary nationalism

    "Please make me pretty, I don't want to die is the first book of poetry by Tawanda Mulalu. In four parts named for the seasons, these poems bring together descriptions of everyday experiences and sensory memories with an overarching focus on the pleasures and difficulties of intimacy and the anomie of United States culture. An immigrant to the U.S. from Botswana, Mulalu explores facets of his life and identity in a powerful first-person voice, including his relationships, his immigration, and his work as a teacher's assistant in a third-grade classroom in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The collection juxtaposes traditional poetic styles such as sonnets and elegies with less orthodox interjections, such as craggy prose-poem "prayers" and other meditations, to create a poetic world both familiar and jarring-one in which history, the body, and poetry can collide in a single surprising turn of image ("The stars also suffer. Immense and dead, their gasses burn/ distant like castanets of antebellum teeth. My open window/ a synecdoche of country") or crystallize into lament: ("If I saw a starving/ black child my first thought would not be to take this picture of myself. Or wake. Everyone is dying. There/ are such pretty words for this.")"--

Zugleich werden immer wieder neue Strategien der Allianzenbildung und solidarischen Praxis initiiert.In den Beiträgen dieses Bandes kommen Künstler_innen, Kurator_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen zu Wort, die ihre Arbeitspraxis in Zusammenarbeit mit Institutionen und Mitstreiter_innen kritisch reflektieren. Das Ergebnis ist eine Bestandsaufnahme verschiedener aktueller Kämpfe zwischen selbstkritischem Lagebericht, Manifest und praxisnahem Handbuch.     Klappentext: The concept of 'Scandinavian/Nordic Exceptionalism' is used in political science to describe the socioeconomic organization of the Nordic welfare states. The concept references the perception that Nordic countries share in common certain exceptional features. This includes a model of society based on a particular arrangement of relations between the individual, family, state and market. Yet, the perception of Scandinavian Exceptionalism(s) also draws on a set of cultural discourses related to the idea that Scandinavian countries display a specific kind of modernity that manifests itself in such phenomena as sexual liberation, gender equality, and environ-mental awareness. This book is about the discourse of Scandinavian exceptionalisms as it is reflected and negotiated in various domains of 19th, 20th and 21st century culture, including literature, art, cinema, media and interior design. The articles in the book are based on papers from the 2018 IASS Conference, held at the University of Copenhagen.
