In this book, experts discuss the use of ‘theatre’ and ‘metatheatre’ to describe ancient Greek dramatic activities. By examining how these two concepts are used in very different ways by scholars of various horizons, this collective volume aims both at widening what should be encompassed under the label ‘theatre’ when looking at the ancient Greek world and at better defining what could count as ‘metatheatre’ in ancient Greek dramatic production.

Throughout Egypt’s long history, pottery sherds and flakes of limestone were commonly used for drawings and short-form texts in a number of languages. These objects are conventionally called ostraca, and thousands of them have been and continue to be discovered. This volume highlights some of the methodologies that have been developed for analyzing the archaeological contexts, material aspects, and textual peculiarities of ostraca.

To honor the 20th year of his reign, Emperor Constantine was given what may be the most precious gift of his lifetime: a codex of artistic panegyrics and odes dedicated to him by the poet Optatianus. Optatianus’ poems showcase the poetic talent of their creator and go beyond the classical confines of a panegyric: they form a literary invitation to an intellectual bond between laudator and laudandus.

The Wonders Beyond Thule by Antonius Diogenes uniquely combines a range of themes, including aspects of a love story, fantastic journeys, and Pythagorean philosophy. The author reassembles this work, which has only been preserved through papyrus fragments as well as later authors’ accounts, into a new edition that offers detailed philological and interpretive commentary on all of the surviving descriptions and fragments.

During the Imperial Rome Age and late antiquity, Euripides was considered a tragic dramatist par excellence, and, alongside Homer, was the most frequently cited poet. This book examines the reception of complete and partially transmitted Euripidean tragedies into the Greek language vis-à-vis key authors and literary genres of the Imperial Rome Age and late antiquity, situating them in the cultural and literary-historical context of the times.

Often noticed, frequently criticized, the descriptions of physical violence in Seneca’s philosophical work De ira and Lucan’s civil war epic De bello civili irritate until today. Only looking at the theory of rhetoric, the use of exempla and the staging of violence allows an approach to ancient reception attitudes and reveals the connections between enumeration and visualizability, violence and the the arousal of the emotions.

Epidicus, a light-hearted comedy by Plautus about the machinations of a trickster slave and the inadequacies of his bumbling masters, appears here in both its original Latin and a sparkling new translation by Catherine Tracy. Epidicus, the cunning slave, is charged with finding his master’s illegitimate daughter and the secret girlfriend of his master’s son, but a comedy of mistaken identities and competing interests ensues. Amid the mayhem, Epidicus aims to win his freedom whilst risking some of the grislier punishments the Romans inflicted on their unfortunate slaves. This parallel edition in both Latin and English, with its accessible introduction and comprehensive notes, guides the reader through this popular Roman play. Tracy explores Epidicus’s roots in Greek drama, its rich social resonances for a Roman audience and its life in performance. She transforms Plautus' colloquial Latin poetry into lively modern English prose, illuminating the play’s many comedic references to the world of the Roman republic. This fine introduction to an enduring play will be of great use and enjoyment for undergraduate students of Latin drama and the general reader alike.

The everyday use of texts in the ancient world relates in many ways to contemporary practice. Besides inscribed artifacts, the self-reflection of Greek and Roman authors demonstrate an awareness of the importance of materiality. This book presents sixteen interdisciplinary studies of specific cases that illuminate this complex interaction between material presence, media semantics, and literary reflection.

In the Middle Ages, writing was not confined to manuscripts, but inscribed in the broader material world, in textiles and tombs, on weapons or human skin. This volume presents the first comparative overview of text-bearing artefacts in medieval German, Old Norse, British, French, Italian and Iberian literature and offers a fresh perspective on the medieval world that takes seriously the vibrancy of matter as a vital aspect of textual culture.

That inscriptions are not only texts but also material objects of specific materiality and presence is one of the recent central insights of ancient epigraphy. This understanding is applied here for the first time systematically, across different regions and over an entire epoch, by examining the change in the inscriptions culture in late antiquity with a view of the Italian peninsula.

In the Middle Ages, rolls were ubiquitous as a writing support. While scholars have long examined the texts and images on rolls, they have rarely taken the manuscripts themselves into account. This volume readdresses this imbalance by focusing on the materiality and various usages of rolls in late medieval England and France. Researchers from England, France, Germany and Singapore demonstrate in 11 contributions how this approach can increase our understanding of the rolls and their contents, as well as the contexts in which they were produced and used.

The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

A building erected north of the Ephesus state market in the final decade before Christ is today one of the few prytaneia that have been identified with certainty in the Greek-Roman world. A prytaneion was the main cult building of the polis; it functioned as the official seat of the city’s highest municipal authorities, with public cenotaphs and the site of the so-called state fire. It was possible to clarify, for the most part, the history of its construction, as well as the function and the structure of the site, but also the transformation process of this ancient monumental building. The introduction to this volume describes the contribution that it makes to scholarship on ancient divinatory practices. It analyses previous and current research, arguing that while this predominantly functionalist work reveals important socio-political dimensions of divination, it also runs the risk of obscuring from view the very people, ideologies, and experiences that scholars seek to understand. It explains that the essays in this volume focus on re-examining what ancient people—primarily those in ancient Greek and Roman communities, but also Mesopotamian and Chinese cultures—thought they were doing through divination. The Introduction provides an overview of the content of each chapter and identifies key themes and questions shared across chapters. The volume explores the types of relationships that divination created between mortals and gods, and what this can tell us about the religions and cultures in which divination was practised.

The present paper asks how Macrobius thinks his extensive allegories of statues of the gods and other elements of traditional religion are possible. He can be shown to espouse a Neoplatonic theory of images. This entails that truthful images are only possible of the Soul and the lower levels of the world, whereas the two highest hypostases cannot be grasped by language and man-made images. Even so, as the sun is an image of the highest principle, Macrobius’ reduction of all deities to the sun can be understood as a discourse on the highest deity, albeit obliquely. How are images, then, truthful? He defends a common theory of inspiration, according to which the creators of images participate in the Logos when creating them. Philosophy is seen as the primordial discipline, containing the knowledge necessary to create and interpret images. These conclusions allow us to pinpoint more precisely the differences between Middle and Neoplatonism.

"Trebia. Trasimene. Cannae. With three stunning victories, Hannibal humbled Rome and nearly shattered its empire. Even today Hannibal's brilliant, if ultimately unsuccessful, campaign against Rome during the Second Punic War (218-202 BC) make him one of history's most celebrated military leaders. This biography by Cornelius Nepos (c. 100-27 BC) sketches Hannibal's life from the time he began traveling with his father's army as a young boy, through his sixteen-year invasion of Italy and his tumultuous political career in Carthage, to his perilous exile and eventual suicide in the East. As Rome completed its bloody transition from dysfunctional republic to stable monarchy, Nepos labored to complete an innovative and influential collection of concise biographies. Putting aside the detailed, chronological accounts of military campaigns and political machinations that characterized most writing about history, Nepos surveyed Roman and Greek history for distinguished men who excelled in a range of prestigious occupations. In the exploits and achievements of these illustrious men, Nepos hoped that his readers would find models for the honorable conduct of their own lives. Although most of Nepos' works have been lost, we are fortunate to have his biography of Hannibal. Nepos offers a surprisingly balanced portrayal of a man that most Roman authors vilified as the most monstrous foe that Rome had ever faced.

Nepos' straightforward style and his preference for common vocabulary make Life of Hannibal accessible for those who are just beginning to read continuous Latin prose, while the historical interest of the subject make it compelling for readers of every ability."

Jahrhundert.

The temporal inconsistencies in Ovid’s "Metamorphoses" are just as multifaceted and numerous as the image that has revealed itself in previous interpretations of these text phenomena – often referred to as "anachronisms" – is blurry and diverse. This volume looks at theories of fiction and language to carry out a systematic reevaluation of Ovid’s poem that does justice to its ambitious aesthetics both in terms of theory and text analysis.

The Saecular Games are considered one of the best-testified religious festivals of ancient Rome. The most significant source are two inscriptions, the Acta augustea and the – partially badly damaged – Acta severiana. The volume offers a completely newly constituted Latin text of both inscriptions with translation and detailed commentary. In addition, other important texts to the Ludi saeculares are provided in the original and in translation.
