    The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves. Der Band, der aus einer internationalen Tagung gleichen Namens hervorgeht, vereinigt verschiedene disziplinäre und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf das Thema der gotischen und anderen germanischen Einfälle ins Römische Reich, besonders im 3.     Im letzten Jahrzehnt vor der Zeitenwende wird im Norden des ephesischen Staatsmarktes ein Gebäude errichtet, das uns heute als eines der wenigen sicher identifizierten Prytaneia der griechisch-römischen Welt bekannt ist. Als Hauptkultgebäude der Polis fungierte das Prytaneion als Amtssitz der höchsten magistratischen Beamten der Stadt, als Ort öffentlicher Ehrenmäler und als der Ort, an dem der sog. Staatsherd untergebracht war – ein ewig brennendes Feuer, das das Leben der Stadt symbolisieren sollte. Zwischen den Jahren 2007 und 2009 wurde das Prytaneion von Ephesos einer abschließenden archäologischen und bauhistorischen Analyse unterzogen. Dabei konnten nicht nur die Baugeschichte, die Funktion und die Struktur der Anlage weitgehend geklärt werden, sondern auch Transformationsprozesse an einem antiken Monumentalbau nachgezeichnet werden, die einen Funktionswandel von einem kaiserzeitlichen Verwaltungs-, Repräsentations- und Kultgebäude zu einem einfachen byzantinischen Werkstatts- und Wohnviertel dokumentieren. Das wechselhafte Schicksal dieses Komplexes, das sich über die ersten acht nachchristlichen Jahrhunderte verfolgen lässt, soll im Zuge dieser Publikation dargelegt werden. A building erected north of the Ephesus state market in the final decade before Christ is today one of the few prytaneia that have been identified with certainty in the Greek-Roman world. A prytaneion was the main cult building of the polis; it functioned as the official seat of the city’s highest municipal authorities, with public cenotaphs and the site of the so-called state fire. It was possible to clarify, for the most part, the history of its construction, as well as the function and the structure of the site, but also the transformation process of this ancient monumental building.     The introduction to this volume describes the contribution that it makes to scholarship on ancient divinatory practices. It analyses previous and current research, arguing that while this predominantly functionalist work reveals important socio-political dimensions of divination, it also runs the risk of obscuring from view the very people, ideologies, and experiences that scholars seek to understand. It explains that the essays in this volume focus on re-examining what ancient people—primarily those in ancient Greek and Roman communities, but also Mesopotamian and Chinese cultures—thought they were doing through divination. The Introduction provides an overview of the content of each chapter and identifies key themes and questions shared across chapters. The volume explores the types of relationships that divination created between mortals and gods, and what this can tell us about the religions and cultures in which divination was practised.

    The present paper asks how Macrobius thinks his extensive allegories of statues of the gods and other elements of traditional religion are possible. He can be shown to espouse a Neoplatonic theory of images. This entails that truthful images are only possible of the Soul and the lower levels of the world, whereas the two highest hypostases cannot be grasped by language and man-made images. Even so, as the sun is an image of the highest principle, Macrobius’ reduction of all deities to the sun can be understood as a discourse on the highest deity, albeit obliquely. How are images, then, truthful? He defends a common theory of inspiration, according to which the creators of images participate in the Logos when creating them. Philosophy is seen as the primordial discipline, containing the knowledge necessary to create and interpret images. These conclusions allow us to pinpoint more precisely the differences between Middle and Neoplatonism.

This biography by Cornelius Nepos (c. 100-27 BC) sketches Hannibal's life from the time he began traveling with his father's army as a young boy, through his sixteen-year invasion of Italy and his tumultuous political career in Carthage, to his perilous exile and eventual suicide in the East. As Rome completed its bloody transition from dysfunctional republic to stable monarchy, Nepos labored to complete an innovative and influential collection of concise biographies. Putting aside the detailed, chronological accounts of military campaigns and political machinations that characterized most writing about history, Nepos surveyed Roman and Greek history for distinguished men who excelled in a range of prestigious occupations.
