Both invectives were in all probability a product of the rhetorical schools of Rome. The book includes: the full manuscript tradition of the text, the history of changes during its transmission, the history of the printed text and, finally, the text itself with an apparatus criticus and also a translation. This work should be of interest to classicists, philologists interested in the history of medieval and renaissance texts, and also to those erudite readers concerned with rhetorical style and the functioning of the rhetorical schools of Rome.

    In der politischen Auseinandersetzung überzieht Cicero Mitglieder der Senatsaristokratie mit Schmähungen, um den Leumund, das Ansehen und damit auch den Rang seiner politischen Gegner nachhaltig zu erschüttern. Die rufschädigenden Vorwürfe werden von Cicero nach einem sich inhaltlich gleichenden Muster gestaltet, dessen Funktion und Ursprung die Arbeit erstmals mithilfe eines diskursanalytischen und erzähltheoretischen Ansatzes systematisiert. So können Lebensbereiche, auf die die Argumente Bezug nehmen, wie Kommensalität und Konsum, soziales Umfeld oder Sexualverhalten, als kulturspezifische Diskursfelder erfasst werden. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie die Diffamierungen generiert und – je nach dem sozialen Profil des zu schmähenden Gegners und nach Adressatenkreis – unterschiedlich komponiert werden. Einige implizieren sittliche Devianz, andere werden gar mit Vergehen oder Straftaten assoziiert. Anders als in der bisherigen Forschung wird neben den Reden im Senat, vor Gericht und in der Volksversammlung auch den Briefen Ciceros Bedeutung beigemessen, die weniger als authentische und alltagsnahe Selbstzeugnisse, denn als stilisierte Abhandlungen über Verhaltensstandards gelesen werden.

    The volume aims at complementing the international literature on the interaction between Cicero and Greece. It offers new and unpublished material on Cicero's presence in Greece literally, deriving from his epistles, speeches and philosophical treatises, but also on his interaction with the Greek philosophical schools, the Greek language and politics, etc. Besides, it offers new knowledge on the appreciation and reception of Cicero and his texts by the Greek world from Late Antiquity to Byzantium and Modern Greece, based on material deriving from a variety of sources (papyri, manuscripts, compendia or encyclopaedias, imitations, translations, early editions, etc.), an aspect of the relationships between Cicero and Greece still understudied. Thus, the volume offers an image as illustrative as possible of various aspects of the presence of the Greek world in Cicero's works and of Cicero's presence in Greece from his own times to the present day.

    In der politischen Auseinandersetzung überzieht Cicero Mitglieder der Senatsaristokratie mit Schmähungen, um den Leumund, das Ansehen und damit auch den Rang seiner politischen Gegner nachhaltig zu erschüttern. Die rufschädigenden Vorwürfe werden von Cicero nach einem sich inhaltlich gleichenden Muster gestaltet, dessen Funktion und Ursprung die Arbeit erstmals mithilfe eines diskursanalytischen und erzähltheoretischen Ansatzes systematisiert. So können Lebensbereiche, auf die die Argumente Bezug nehmen, wie Kommensalität und Konsum, soziales Umfeld oder Sexualverhalten, als kulturspezifische Diskursfelder erfasst werden. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie die Diffamierungen generiert und – je nach dem sozialen Profil des zu schmähenden Gegners und nach Adressatenkreis – unterschiedlich komponiert werden. Einige implizieren sittliche Devianz, andere werden gar mit Vergehen oder Straftaten assoziiert. Anders als in der bisherigen Forschung wird neben den Reden im Senat, vor Gericht und in der Volksversammlung auch den Briefen Ciceros Bedeutung beigemessen, die weniger als authentische und alltagsnahe Selbstzeugnisse, denn als stilisierte Abhandlungen über Verhaltensstandards gelesen werden.

    In der Antike diente der Brief nicht nur dem Austausch von Informationen, sondern er erfüllte darüber hinaus eine Vielzahl weiterer kommunikativer Funktionen. Einen repräsentativen Einblick in diese zu geben, ist Anliegen der 18 Beiträge des Bandes, deren zeitliches Spektrum über die ganze griechische und römische Antike reicht. In ihrem Zentrum stehen die grundlegenden Konstituenten eines Briefes, nämlich sein ‚Adressant‘ bzw. Absender und sein ‚Adressat‘. Sie fragen dabei nach dem Verhältnis von Personenkonstellation, Kontext und Kommunikationsstruktur der untersuchten Briefe, aber auch wie sich die verschiedenen in diesen zu greifenden kommunikativen Strategien in der textinternen Modellierung von Adressant und Adressat niederschlagen. Sie berücksichtigen schließlich auch, dass möglicherweise nicht nur der direkt im Formular genannte Briefempfänger Ziel der Korrespondenz ist, sondern ein über diesen hinausgehendes Publikum, das somit als ‚Adressat auf zweiter Ebene‘ fungiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund gilt die Aufmerksamkeit der Beiträge auch der Erweiterung des Funktionsspektrums antiker Briefe im allgemeinen sowie der Gestaltungsoptionen der briefinternen Sprecherinstanzen im Speziellen, zu denen in vorderster Linie die Selbstdarstellung des Adressaten gegenüber einem größeren Publikum gehört.

    This commentary offers the reader a set of letters (or letter parts) written by Cicero, Paul, and Seneca, which have been selected against the Transformational Leadership categories of ‘idealised influence’, ‘inspirational motivation’, ‘intellectual stimulation’, and ‘individualised consideration’. Chapter 1 offers introduction into authors and theory: all three letter writers are considered as ancient leadership figures composing leadership letters. The letters selected are presented in original text facing a translation (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 provides analysis and discussion of each letter, and aims to introduce the reader to the historical and literary contexts before reading the letter through the lenses of Transformational Leadership theory. Chapter 4 sums up the findings on each letter and each letter writer in light of Transformational Leadership and its categories. The volume is aimed at all those who are studying the function of ancient letter-writing – especially the letters of Cicero, Paul, or Seneca.

    Ciceros zweite philippische Rede ist nach Auffassung des Autors der vorliegenden Studie das berühmteste Beispiel für die Existenz von Flugschriften in der späten römischen Republik. Sie wurde offensichtlich wie ihr poetisches Pendant, Varros Bimarcus, im November 44 v. Chr. verbreitet. Sie war Bestandteil eines typischen Adelskonflikts, mobilisierte kurzfristig erfolgreich den Widerstand gegen M. Antonius und war ein Mittel Ciceros, den Senat als Machtzentrum zu erhalten. Sie gab den Befreiern um Brutus ein Handlungskonzept vor und trug wahrscheinlich zum Tod ihres Verfassers bei.Diese Flugschrift ist eine eigenständige Form propagandistischer Flugschriftenfiktion bzw. eines ciceronianischen Mimesis-Modells. Vorstellungen der stoischen Philosophie und realen Politik wurden im Sinne eines mimetischen Konflikts zu einer radikalisierten Ideologie umgeformt und mimetisiert. Traditionelle rhetorische Handbuchmuster wurden zur Festschreibung von Ciceros Gesellschaftsmodell mimetisiert. Die eingefügten komponierten fabulae, wie die Rhetoriknachhilfestunde für Antonius, die Curio-und Luperkalien-Episode sind entsprechend einer poetisierenden, bereichernden Rhetorik mit großer inhaltlicher und stilistischer Freiheit komponiert und erzeugen über Textdeixis, Personendeixis und Interferenzen Unterhaltung im Sinne von Propaganda. This study argues that Cicero composed the Second Philippic as a political pamphlet and followed specific genre criteria . The Second Philippic was probably distributed as a pamphlet and may well have cost Cicero his life.

    Cicero kämpfte sein Leben lang für die Erhaltung der römischen Republik (res publica), die ungehinderte Herrschaft des Senats und die Abwehr der Mächte, die Recht und Gerechtigkeit sowie die freie politische Auseinandersetzung im Senat und vor der Volksversammlung gefährdeten. Seine vierzehn Philippischen Reden sind so ein Angriff auf den Konsul Antonius und dessen zweifelhafte Amtsführung. Allerdings konnte er noch nicht ahnen, dass Antonius zum Urgroßvater der berüchtigten römischen Kaiser Caligula und Nero wurde. Auch die skandalöse Verbindung mit der ägyptischen Königin Kleopatra erlebte er nicht mehr; er hätte diese Liaison sicherlich für seine Polemik gegen den Erzfeind zu nutzen gewusst, den er als ein kriminelles Element darstellt, das es nur auf Zerstörung und Untergang abgesehen hat und daher zu beseitigen ist. Die Ziele und Methoden der Akteure auf der politischen Bühne misst Cicero an den traditionellen römischen Wertvorstellungen. Darin stimmen die Reden gegen Antonius mit dem Werk "Über die Pflichten" überein, mit dem Cicero auf die Gefahren eines hemmungslosen, egoistischen und skrupellosen Machtstrebens aufmerksam machen wollte. Wie er in seinen philosophischen Schriften den Kampf gegen Caesar geführt hatte, so setzt er ihn in den Reden gegen Antonius mit den Waffen des Geistes fort. Cicero war davon überzeugt, dass Philosophie und Redekunst eine Einheit bilden und dass Theorie und Praxis, Ethik und Politik, Denken und Sprechen, Bildung und öffentliche Rede nicht voneinander zu trennen sind. In den Reden gegen Antonius thematisiert Cicero das Leitbild des gebildeten, rhetorisch kompetenten und moralisch gefestigten Politikers, der alle seine Fähigkeiten in den Dienst der res publica stellt, zum letzten Mal, um ihm konsequent wie nie zuvor zu folgen. Die vorliegende Übersetzung wurde 1990 von der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, Darmstadt, ausgezeichnet.

Angemessenheit wird in der rhetorischen Tradition unter verschiedenen Rubra behandelt: vom kairós der Sophisten bis hin zur höfischen convenienza bei Castiglione. Besonders weitreichend sind ihre Implikationen für die Rhetorik des Aristoteles und für Ciceros Synthese von Rhetorik und praktischer Philosophie: als decorum orationis und decorum vitae. Dass dem bisher nie in einer Monographie analysierten Konzept der Angemessenheit in der Rhetorik stets eine zentrale Rolle zukommt, ist Hauptthese dieses Buches. Es untersucht detailliert und textnah die Konzepte von Angemessenheit und den "modus operandi" der verschiedenen Autoren - mit teils überraschenden Ergebnissen. Appropriateness is the key to persuasion: a speech can only be convincing when it takes into account the opinions of the audience and the concrete situation. But how can rhetorical theory - which like any other theory has to abstract - grasp appropriateness as a phenomenon? What concepts did it develop in order to achieve this? The central thesis of the volume is that although it has hardly been analysed in the past, appropriateness always plays a central role in rhetoric.

    Ciceros actio secunda in Verrem gehört zweifellos zu den bekanntesten Reden des großen römischen Politikers. Dennoch wurde sie bisher nur teilweise in moderner Kommentierung erschlossen. Diese Forschungslücke wird durch den hier vorgelegten Kommentar für De praetura Siciliensi geschlossen. Das zweite Buch der actio secunda ist so unterschiedlichen Themen wie Bestechungen oder Bereicherungen im Zusammenhang mit Zivil- und Kapitalprozessen, Kommunalämtern und Ehrenstatuen sowie der Kooperation mit den Steuerpächtern gewidmet. Der Kommentar berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse verschiedenster Forschungsdisziplinen, besonders der rechts- und althistorischen Forschung, arbeitet sie kritisch auf und macht sie für das Verständnis der Rede fruchtbar. Vor allem aber beleuchtet er diese Einzelrede erstmals vollständig aus philologischer Sicht, erörtert Sprache, Stil und Textkritik und zeigt vor allem die Raffinesse von Ciceros Redetaktik in dieser Rede und im Zusammenhang des Gesamtkorpus auf.     Dream interpretation was a prominent feature of the intellectual and imaginative world of late antiquity, for martyrs and magicians, philosophers and theologians, polytheists and monotheists alike. Finding it difficult to account for the prevalence of dream-divination, modern scholarship has often condemned it as a cultural weakness, a mass lapse into mere superstition. In this book, Patricia Cox Miller draws on pagan, Jewish, and Christian sources and modern semiotic theory to demonstrate the integral importance of dreams in late-antique thought and life. She argues that Graeco-Roman dream literature functioned as a language of signs that formed a personal and cultural pattern of imagination and gave tangible substance to ideas such as time, cosmic history, and the self. Miller first discusses late-antique theories of dreaming, with emphasis on theological, philosophical, and hermeneutical methods of deciphering dreams as well as the practical uses of dreams, especially in magic and the cult of Asclepius. She then considers the cases of six Graeco-Roman dreamers: Hermas, Perpetua, Aelius Aristides, Jerome, Gregory of Nyssa, and Gregory of Nazianus. Her detailed readings illuminate the ways in which dreams provided solutions to ethical and religious problems, allowed for the reconfiguration of gender and identity, provided occasions for the articulation of ethical ideas, and altogether served as a means of making sense and order of the world.

    Alexander the Great, according to Plutarch, carried on his campaigns a copy of the Iliad, kept alongside a dagger; on a more pronounced ideological level, ancient Romans looked to the Aeneid as an argument for imperialism. In this major reinterpretation of epic poetry beginning with Virgil, David Quint explores the political context and meanings of key works in Western literature. He divides the history of the genre into two political traditions: the Virgilian epics of conquest and empire that take the victors' side (the Aeneid itself, Camoes's Lusíadas, Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata) and the countervailing epic of the defeated and of republican liberty (Lucan's Pharsalia, Ercilla's Araucana, and d'Aubigné's Les tragiques). These traditions produce opposing ideas of historical narrative: a linear, teleological narrative that belongs to the imperial conquerors, and an episodic and open-ended narrative identified with "romance," the story told of and by the defeated. Quint situates Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within these rival traditions. He extends his political analysis to the scholarly revival of medieval epic in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to Sergei Eisenstein's epic film, Alexander Nevsky. Attending both to the topical contexts of individual poems and to the larger historical development of the epic genre, Epic and Empire provides new models for exploring the relationship between ideology and literary form.

    Language writing, the most controversial avant-garde movement in contemporary American poetry, appeals strongly to writers and readers interested in the politics of postmodernism and in iconoclastic poetic form. Drawing on materials from popular culture, avoiding the standard stylistic indications of poetic lyricism, and using nonsequential sentences are some of the ways in which language writers make poetry a more open and participatory process for the readers. Reading this kind of writing, however, may not come easily in a culture where poetry is treated as property of a special class.     Cicero has played a pivotal role in shaping Western culture. His public persona, his self-portrait as model of Roman prose, philosopher, and statesman, has exerted a durable and profound impact on the educational system and the formation of the ruling class over the centuries. Joining up with recent studies on the reception of Cicero, this volume approaches the figure of Cicero from a 'biographical', more than 'philological', perspective and considers the multiple ways by which different ages reacted to Cicero and created their 'Ciceros'. From Cicero's lifetime to our times, it focuses on how the image of Cicero was revisited and reworked by intellectuals and men of culture, who eulogized his outstanding oratorical and political virtues but, not rarely, questioned the role he had in Roman politics and society. An international group of scholars elaborates on the figure of Cicero, shedding fresh light on his reception in late antiquity, Humanism and Renaissance, Enlightenment and modern centuries. Historians, literary scholars and philosophers, as well as graduate students, will certainly profit from this volume, which contributes enormously to our understanding of the influence of Cicero on Western culture over the times.

    Cicero was not only a great Roman politician, lawyer and orator: he also dealt extensively with philosophy, which he believed constituted the surest foundation for his commitment to civic affairs. Not limiting himself to the translation of previous philosophical thought, he critically addressed central theoretical questions, and thereby made a lasting impact on Roman intellectual life. This book offers a modern guide to interpretations of Cicero's philosophical studies, one that ranges across his numerous philosophical works. Addressed to students and scholars of ancient philosophy, and to interested readers in the humanities more generally, the volume aims to break down the boundaries between the philosophical, literary and linguistic dimensions of Cicero's highly influential oeuvre. Stefano Maso is a full professor in Ancient Philosophy at the University of Ca' Foscari - Venice. Among his books are: Grasp and Dissent: Cicero and Epicurean Philosophy (Brepols 2015); Epicurus on Eidola: Peri Phuseos Book II. Update, Proposals, and Discussions (ed. with F. Masi, Hakkert 2015). He is co-editor of "Lexis. Poetica, retorica e comunicazione nella tradizione classica".
