"This volume defines and analyses how scripture is used within the apocalyptic genre of writing. By focusing on the Book of Revelation and the re-use of scripture, a wide body of scholars seek to illuminate the relationship between the author’s theology and his interpretations of scripture, through a close examination of key passages and themes. Subsequently the contributors aim to establish greater clarity about the hermeneutical methods and axioms employed in Revelation and other apocalyptic texts, and about the extent to which these are characteristic or constituent of the genre. These over-arching aims are addressed through four different analyses. Beginning with a re-evaluation of central methodological questions around the use of the scriptures in apocalyptic literature, the volume then explores the influence of the Old Testament on aspects of the theology of the Book of Revelation, and considers how these scriptural themes are received in later Christian tradition. This is followed by a series of exegetical chapters, investigating key specific examples of intertextuality in Revelation. Finally, the volume examines the re-use of scripture in other early Jewish and early Christian apocalyptic writings (including Paul’s letters, 1 Enoch and the Qumran Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice), so that conclusions can be drawn about the methods of exegesis practised within apocalyptic more broadly."

The symbolism of Revelation has puzzled readers for centuries. Every generation falls prey to extreme views of interpretation. Even worse, they minimize the importance of John's Apocalypse by not teaching or preaching from it. Yet Revelation is a profound work of New Testament theology and warrants a close study. John expects and prepares believers to follow the Lamb through suffering and possible martyrdom. The problem is centered on what the symbols mean. Are they literal? Are they symbolic? Do the images refer to events and people in the first century, or to the last days of planet earth? Moreover, how is the book structured? Is it one vision, four visions, or more? Are the visions linear or recapped? Lions, Locusts, and the Lamb: Interpreting Key Images in the Book of Revelation demonstrates a way to unlock John's structure and unravel his symbols. The key is to follow a logical step-by-step interpretive approach that accents the historical, cultural, intertextual, extratextual, and particularly intratextual allusions and connections. The result is a book that delivers the basic meaning of three hundred images and categorizes them into an accessible guide for teachers, preachers, and readers of Revelation. -- From Publisher

"In Argument is War: Relevance-Theoretic Comprehension of the Conceptual Metaphor of War in the Apocalypse, Clifford T. Winters demonstrates that the apparent war in the Apocalypse is rather telling the story of the gospel: how Christ will restore Israel and, through them, the rest of the world. When Revelation is viewed through the corrective lens of cognitive linguistics, its violence becomes victory, its violent characters become Christ, and its bloody end becomes the blessed beginning of the New Jerusalem. Revelation is simply telling the story of the early church (the Gospels and Acts) to the early church, and it is using a conceptual metaphor ('ARGUMENT IS WAR') to do it."

The book of Revelation is a disorienting work, full of beasts, heavenly journeys, holy war, the End of the Age, and the New Jerusalem. It is difficult to follow the thread that ties the visions together and to makes sense of the work's message. This book argues that one way to understand the strange history of Revelation and its challenging texts is to go back to its manuscripts. The texts of the Greek manuscripts of Revelation are the foundation for the words that we encounter when we read Revelation in a modern Bible. But the manuscripts also tell us what other ancient, medieval, and early modern people thought about the work they copied and read. The paratexts of Revelation-the many features of the manuscripts that help readers to navigate and interpret the text-are one important point of evidence

In this volume, Ralph Korner argues that John's extensive social identification with Judaism(s), Jewishness, and Jewish institutions does not reflect a literary program of replacing Israel with the ekklēsiai ("churches"/"assemblies"), that is the Jewish and non-Jewish followers of Jesus as Israel's Messiah. Rather, John is emplacing his Christ-followers further within Israel, without thereby superseding Israel as a national identity for ethnic Jews who do not follow Jesus as the Christos There are three primary roads travelled in this investigative journey. First, Korner explores ways in which a Jewish heritage is intrinsic to the literary structure, genre, eschatology, symbolism, and theological motifs of the Apocalypse. Second, he challenges the linear chronology of (generally) supersessionist dispensational readings of Revelation's visionary content by arguing for a reiterative/repetitive structure based on certain literary devices that also provide structure for visions within Jewish apocalypses and Hebrew prophecies. Third, he incorporates the most recent research on ekklēsia usage, especially in Asia Minor, to assess how John's ekklēsia associations might have been (non-supersessionally) perceived, especially by Jews in Roman Asia. -- back cover
